I find it borderline useless.

From the stands you can't read them. On TV you can't read them unless they're zoomed in and the players are relatively stationary.

We've all coped with just numbers for 150-odd years now, I'd like to think we can continue to cope.

sure they could do better with different font/colour combinations but as you say might only help in stationary close-ups
