2013 Player Review - # 37 Max Gawn

Featured Replies

A major hamstring injury in the pre season hindered his recovery from an ACL injury but Gawn recovered to play some handy games in the ruck. With more bulk and size and a full preseason, he could become a key player in the club's revival.

Not fit enough yet, but there's plenty to work with. A guy of his size could be Aaron Sandilands or he could be Peter Street, the question with guys like this is nearly always can they get involved enough due to their inherent lack of mobility? I think he's shown enough of an ability to get involved in the play to think he's more the former than the latter.

Sandilands proved the value of being huge in the second half of the granny.

But they still did not win Nasher.

The big question for me with MG is will his knees hold up?

I like Gawny and think he could be a good player but I think we are putting to many eggs in the one basket.

If Gawn goes down for good we are left with a near finished Jamar, an AFL level Jake Spencer and a 2nd ruckman in Fitzy.

We need to look at getting at least 1 more true ruckman to develop going forward. Then we can get rid of Jamar and Spencer leaving us with Gawn, Fitzy, New ruckman.

Our tall forward line of Clark, Dawes and Hogan means that one can be a back up ruckman or just play ruck when the ball goes in the 50m - saves Gawn energy.

YD Hawthorn have proved to me that you don't need a champion ruckman to win flags.

It is way more important to have very good midfielders .

They won the flag with a second rate ruckman and a numbers of good part timers.

IMO we have the Ruckmen, we need six top line mid fielders.

Agreed.

A great tap ruckman clearly has value and I would love it if Gawn developed into a great player.

However I'd rather someone who simply can compete making the stoppage a 50/50 and adding value as a 4th mid like a Cox has been so great at over his career.

We were very patient with his injuries so they should hold up fine and we are clearly due for some luck.

I think with good tutelage Gawn can become our poor mans Sandilands in a fashion. No offence Maxy but AAron is pretty bloody good.. get to within a bulls roar and id be stoked :)
