Tantalising Finals Series

Featured Replies

Who really cares. Footy finished for me after Rd 2.

I'll preface this by saying that I don't want to get into a slinging match about NM and to recognise that Kangaroos do well to make finals (and I obviously am not talking about their 90's finals record). I also don't want this to be responded to with a "I wish we had the same problem rah rah" - this is not about the MFC, this is a post about North Melbourne:

North Melbourne's finals record this millennium is diabolical (if not worse).

Let's have a look:

2000

125 point loss to Essendon

10 point win over Hawthorn

50 point loss to Melbourne

2002

38 point loss to Melbourne

2005

87 point loss to Port Adelaide

2007

106 point loss to Geelong

33 point win over Hawthorn

87 point loss to Port Adelaide

2008

35 point loss to Sydney

2012

96 point loss to West Coast

Total:

Played 10, Won 2, Lost 8

Average Winning Margin: 21.5

Average Losing Margin: 78

Amazing how the "Shinboner" tag only pops up in the media after a win...

^ Interesting.

Let's also take a look at Adelaide:

2001

68 point loss to Carlton

2002

71 point loss to Brisbane

12 point win over Melbourne

28 point loss to Collingwood

2003

56 point win over West Coast

42 point loss to Brisbane

2005

8 point loss to St Kilda

83 point win over Port Adelaide

16 point loss to West Coast

2006

30 point win over Fremantle

10 point loss to West Coast

2007

3 point loss to Hawthorn

2008

31 point loss to Collingwood

2009

96 point win over Essendon

5 point loss to Collingwood

2012

29 point loss to Sydney

Total

Played 16, Won 5, Lost 11

Average Winning margin: 55.4

Average Losing margin: 28

Also a perennial finals flop this millennium. When they win, they at least win well, but to have played 16 finals for just the 5 wins isn't fantastic at all.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Brisbane

Forget the haunting of Round 11 — we’ve got this. Melbourne returns to its inner-city fortress for its milestone 100th AFLW match, carrying a formidable 10–2 record at IKON Stadium. Brisbane’s record at the venue is more balanced: 4 wins, 4 losses and a draw.

Melbourne wrapped up the AFLW home and away season with a hard-fought 14-point win over Geelong at Kardinia Park. The result secured second place on the ladder with a 9–3 record and a home qualifying final against the Brisbane Lions next week.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Geelong

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
