AFL gets hypocritical over player poaching

Featured Replies

The AFL is worried about poaching because they know established clubs will attempt to raid GWS and the Suns.

Attempt???

I don't think teams should be allowed to talk to players or agents outside of the relevant October window as the player is coming out of contract.

If they do, the team is fined $100k, the player a tenth of the current salary, and the agent loses their licence.

Teams may talk to their own players but I assume players will most likely wait till October.

Get all the contracts done in October.

As far as I'm concerned the issue here isn't one that's about ensuring the survival of new franchises. It's about ethics - those of the AFL.

The AFL sat back last year and not only condoned poaching but was actively involved in the GWS heist that procured Scully. It made damn sure that Melbourne couldn't match the GWS offer to Scully and didn't see fit to give Melbourne the proper restitution for the loss of a #1 draft selection.

Now it's worried about poaching?

Please give us all a break!

I like both of these posts, you can tell because I pressed the like button :) which I also like.

I also like igloos.

And hipsters with all their underground culture, but before they became popular.

I don't like coffee though.

I cannot agree with that...

It is a well thought out logical post that most people would see merit in. Fair enough that you can't agree with it; everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, I would really appreciate it if you could present some arguement as to why you don't agree with it, add a little substance. Cheers

Worth while post this one.

Forget the haunting of Round 11 — we’ve got this. Melbourne returns to its inner-city fortress for its milestone 100th AFLW match, carrying a formidable 10–2 record at IKON Stadium. Brisbane’s record at the venue is more balanced: 4 wins, 4 losses and a draw.

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
