Continuing on the Aussie rock/blues theme, here's a couple of blasts from the past (the progressive rock era?)

Seeing Chain on Saturday night - I will give you a review of the gig !

Of all of the bands on the Soundwave list, the ones that I would be most interested in seeing are: Ministry (Jesus Built My Hot Rod is one of my favourite songs), One OK Rock (excellent Japanese band who my ex has a few albums of) and [censored] Up, purely because they look too wholesome to have a name like that.

Its official - I am the Dustin Fletcher of Festivals - the mind and heart is willing but the body is failing.

Saw Ministry - excellent.

Faith no more rocked the house. Chris Cornell - this is what i imagine i sound like when i sing ! Incubus - excellent. Disappointed with the Smashing Pumpkins - musically was fantastic but no connection with audience at all.

Slipknot - great visually and really tight.

Marilyn Manson - horrible.

Of the bands I hadn't heard of - Tonight Alive - Australian - really rocked - I got home and youtubed them and a bit Power pop when they are not live.

Hollywood undead - a cross between the beastie boys and linkin park - really enjoyed them.

It would be remiss of me if I didn't mention Steel Panther - they sent respect for women back to the dark ages with every five minutes getting girls to "show us your b00bs" - which all obliged. Their songs are so sexually blunt. They were sort of like watching a bad 1970's porn movie made into a musical. But I could not help but laugh.

I saw Chain at Bluesfest last year NB... you will love them. If anything, Phil Manning has improved since the old days (or maybe the technology just makes him sound better?).

it may be my failed eyesight and shot hearing that makes them sound good.

You know how you make allowances for bands as they get older ( aka - Mick Jaggers voice is not what it used to be).

No allowances needed for Chain - they were phenomenal. Matt Taylor's voice was the same as the back in the 70's.

You are also right about Phil Manning - he was on fire. I did go up o the stage during the break in sets and noticed that he had nothing on the floor in terms of pedals and switches .

Compare that to Mike Einziger of Incubus that had two acres of stuff on the floor around him.

This Saturday night I am seeing my favourite of all live bands - The Cat Empire. It is impossible not to come out of a Cat Empire gig smiling from ear to ear,

A few mates & I, armed with guitars & the like, gather weekly & murder a number of songs - some of which are obscure, some of which are much loved favourites. We don't discriminate, we are c r a p at all of them.

Here's one of our recent victims from the mid '80's. It's also one of my very favourite songs - I am a sucker for a jangly guitar sound - so I thought I'd throw it in here for the Usual Suspects in this thread

Love the Smithereens... and that particular song for some reason reminds me a little of another favourite band of mine, Husker Du's song Don't Want to Know if You Are Lonely.

Good stuff. Husker Du's Bob Mould later formed a band called Sugar. They provided another song for me & my mates to slaughter

Sunnyboys tonight at the forum - i am getting too old for going out 3 times a week to a gig.

Imagine if I drank as well ( which I don't)

Sorry I am a Luddite but I have tried to upload the latest Utube copy of Sir Viv Richards singing his new song Smokin Joe. Average Barry White simile but the video of Viv is classic stuff. Can you please help.

I'm assuming this is the one yeah?

To post a song - just copy and paste the address bar (here) for whichever youtube clip you want to post up. The address bar will initially just copy as the 'text' but once you press post, the video will then magically appear (well, maybe not magically but you get the drift)

By the way, the song is kinda cool in a corny sort of way ... I like it ... speaking of Viv, how good was he in the inaugural world cup? 3 direct hit run-outs (?) including both Chappell brothers I believe. What a player!

Thanks for that Macca. Great memories of the Master Blaster in those visuals.

My only claim to fame with Sir Viv is that I was holidaying in India in 1987/88 for a few months and found myself staying at the Presidents Hotel in Bombay at the time with the West Indian team. I happened to share the lift a number of times at night with Sir Viv I remember. Viv was always with some pretty young Indian girl heading up to a party on the upper floors as I remember it.

He was certainly a batting genius!

Sunnyboys were great -so good to see Jeremy Oxley in a good place....

However - The Cat Empire - You cannot help but dance and jump and sing when they play. I don't know how many times I have seen them but they never ever go through the motions ( unfortunately The Whitlams at the Corner - did go through the motions). There is a reason that the Cat Empire is my favourite live band - i always walk away ( albeit with a limp as I jump around like an idiot) with a huge smile on my face.

While on the subject of the Sunnyboys, I got to know Peter Oxley reasonable well through his time as bassist in a band called Shy Imposters who also featured Richard Bergman on guitar; the Sunnyboys evolved from this band. They also did a superb version of Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit. The biggest shame about Peter Oxley was that he closed down his Newtown Pizza Restaurant.

I went to the Sydney Rock 'n' Roll & Alternative Market today at Sydney University's Manning Bar. One of the acts performing was Los Straitjackets (from the USA) with a guest vocalist Big Sandy. If they are heading your way (wherever that may be) do not, I repeat, do not miss them. Great morph of surf, rockabilly and rumble rock (a la Link Wray). Follow this link to a few photos I took of the day.

I am off to see Pokey LaFarge....

I knew nothing about him - but loved the name.

Looked up his stuff on youtube and now I am very excited !

One of the Bluesfest sideshows I believe? I will check out his YouTube material... did you take a gander at Los StraitJackets (immediately above) NB?

they sound great - fit in really well in a Quentin Tarantino movie

Went to a taping of Rockwiz last night - it was a 50's theme.

What a great night.

Firstly - Katie Noonan has the voice of an angel

Secondly - they had Col Joy on - he is a seriously funny man and can still sing well for a man of 78.

Did you get on the panel ? I reckon you'd go alright on music trivia knowledge

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
