Found this gem of a picture on flickr from the State Library. The caption is "This wood engraving, published in Police news, August 5, 1876, shows a Melbourne football player named Longden as he is kicked in the head by Carlton Imperial player."

There is a group for Demons photos on Flickr. Have a browse, is some good and some not so good.
