Goff will receive a contract worth nearly 28 million (4 years) with about an 18 million signing bonus ... Wentz will receive a slightly lesser amount (26 million / 16-17 million signing bonus)

It's any wonder the 1st round picks are generally beside themselves with joy and who could blame them? ... of course, the draftees are coming from a largely amateur background (College) so it's like going from one extreme to another.

How good is the NFL...

draft day is always fun even when your team barely has any picks... Only in the NFL can the Tunsil thing happen. Absolutely amazing.

Big winners for me, Titans and Jags. List wise they are both serious teams now. Jags will be so great. Defenders galore, especially if Jack gets up, but their offense is great too with receivers everywhere and a super young quarterback. Watch out for them.

Totally agree with dan about the jags. Their defense just got so much better and their first round pick last year Dante flower is back after a pre season ACL. They could jump up big this year.

Vikes did ok. Treadwell is the type of receiver we need not super quick but tall and can get those 10-20 yard throws that teddy is good at executing. We got the German receiver "Mobo" in the sixth round. After watching AP highlights on you tube he decided to give football a go and now he is a Viking good on him. Everyone else happy with what their teams got?

Good on him! 6ft 4, 229 pounds & runs 40 yard dash in 4.43 seconds... That's some kind of athlete, be interesting to follow his progress.

Falcons probably grabbed Keanu Neale a bit early at pick 17 but he wouldn't have been there by there 2nd round. Thought they'd go with a LB like Darren Lee but safety is a spot they needed to address also. Seems like they've gone for Quinn's "fast & physical" style of play with the players they've picked. Read a few articles saying his trying to create his on Legion of Boom.. See how that pans out. Suprised we didn't take a QB, they got Matt Schuab to back up Matt Ryan but thought they might think long term and pick one up.

I'm already hanging out for the season!

Whitner may sign with the Rams, that would be good.

We are trialling aWR (williams) who got cut from Auburn due to behavior issues.  They say would have gone first round of he had no issues.  Supposedly he is seeing a shrink. A WR is required, hopefully he works out for us.

It seems like that the NFL have a good depth of talent pool.. Guessing the huge population in the US means there's a deeper pool but its surprising how many players I watch and think "gee where'd he come from ?" Only to look him up and see he was an undrafted free agent or a 4-7th round pick!

One of the things that causes that i believe is due to the college system being so different to the NFL especially at QB. take Goff, goes number one, he had played a system that is not NFL. he took one snap under centre in the years. So he has to adjust big time. Same for a lot of positions.

Pleased with Eagles, but just because I liked the tape on Wentz. As I said earlier, Gorgo, you and I will be at each other for years on Goff/Wentz watch. And as I said, I think Goff has a neater NFL ready throw.

Otherwise, not a great or even interesting draft at all by Eagles. While Wentz learns the ropes Eagles will be lucky to go 6-10. Will hand a top 4 pick to Browns next year. Then Wentz will be starter, and we'll go into 2018 with only one second rounder missing. Fine by me. Rebuild time.

The Packers drafted 3 players for our defensive line, 2 offensive tackles, a WR and a DE.  Our first round choice (DT Kenny Clark) looks a decent pick by all accounts.

Anyway, from all reports, all the choices were valid and pleasing but I don't know a great deal about any of the draftees (I don't watch much college football apart from the odd big clash)

Time will tell.  Drafting remains a bit of a mystery to me as it does in the AFL.  All the knowledge in the world can often amount to not much at all.  I just trust that they know what they're doing and that they know what they're looking for (and I wish them some luck as well - because, there is an element of luck)

I don't follow the college games, I find them quite different to NFL games even tho fundamentally it's the same game, it plays out different in my head... Yep, weird, I know. Ha ha

Every season I get a little bit more interested in college (and slightly more knowledgeable) but I quite honestly haven't got the time to fit it in.  I find the weekly rankings a bit intriguing but that's about it.

Bringing in semi-finals added more interest but they'd need a final 8 (at least) to get more of my attention.  If they at least did that the teams would start to feel more familiar.

Can't get into college ball. With the offense usually being run very differently to the pro's it kinda looks like a 20/20 version of the NFL. I may be wrong as I don't watch too much of it. I see the buc's are getting a lot of heat for trading up in the 2nd round for a kicker. Dunno if they needed to use a 2nd round pick on him. From the little I've heard he is a good kicker but a 2nd round pick? Nah not for me.

Yeah I did a double take when I saw they took a kicker in the second round, was even more amazed that they traded up for him.

We signed williams.  Interesting to see if he is as good as they say. But also can he stay or of trouble.

TJ McDonald done for dui as well.

Hayne finished in the NFL.. I was never convinced he would make it, typical media & uneducated people got carried away with his pre season form against nobodies.. Good on him for having a crack but looks like he got in befor the 49ers didn't bring him back. At least 7mate will show decent games this year!

I didn't think he would really make it, it's bloody hard to change to a sport which is so technical and you need to know 5 plays per call and what your role is on each look.

Noone who follows the game gave him a chance. When he fumbled that first ball, he was a dead man walking.

Heh. Sook. Bring on Wentz I say. lol I would even get excited about the inevitable high first round pick. But we traded it away.

What do you think of Foles holding out of OTA's Gorgoroth ? Obviously with Goff coming in he knows he'll most likely be the back up but surely you get to training and work hard to fight for the spot not just sook it up and look elsewhere. Seems like he could be headed to the Jets if Fitzpatrick doesn't come to an agreement

From what fisher said he is happy for Foles to miss. I think Foles is looking to be number 4. Mannion is getting reps in the otas as is keenum. No club is really after Foles at the moment so no rush or care for us it seems.

Foles is doneskies. If he got another starting job I'd be stunned. If he landed at Jets though, he could do ok.

Watched him at Philly when he was "good." Nobody liked him, even then.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
