Demons v Crows

In what ended in a closely fought game where our ruckmen dominated, Melbourne put up a good fight despite losing two players in the first qtr.

We should have won but our boys missed 4 shots at goal in the last few minutes including Greeny’s 30 metre one out in front. It was a good effort considering the paper bag retching rough plane trip for a few of the boys combined with late arrival and hurried pre game preparations.

Warnock: Good at fullback

Jones: OK

Bartrum: OK. Needs more penetrating kick.

Gysberts: Not ready yet.

Miller: Played CHF quite well.

Frawley: real good

Trengrove: Excellent. Works hard and covers huge amt of ground.

Dunn: Does well as a tagger.

Petterd: Real good

Grimes: Very classy. Like the look of the lad.

Green: Good

Maric: Not ready yet.

Bell: Did well as tagger on Thompson til bad injury.!!

McDonald: Good.

Jurrah: Trade mark goal back over head then injured!!

Cheney: Good. Possible Tagger??

Rivers: Good til injured!!!

McNamara: Good in back lines. Cool under pressure.

Scully: Worked tirelessly for team & covered a huge amt of ground. Impressive.

Martin: Love his endeavour but fwd line not his spot.

Jamar: Clearly improving with age. I never thought I would say that too.

Bail: Did ok with limited opportunities.

Strauss: Not ready yet.

Spenser: Rucked strongly. Good around ground.

Newton: Not ready yet. Drops ball from too high when kicking(I.M.O)

I thought Strauss, Maric and Gysberts were all good. Id go as far as to say Strauss and Maric will play round 1. Just my opinion.

Did you happen to catch what happened to Rivers? I was standing behind our interchange and noticed him limping heavily after the game?

Probably just re occuring knee soreness...they usually play safe with that sort of thing. That's what it looked like when he limped past out back

I haven't heard it mentioned anywhere... who gave away the free at the end? Was it there? Obviously it's of no real concern but it whoever it was has hopefully learned a lesson about keeping a cool head in critical moments like that

Most posts here suggested we dominated the rucks, with BOTH the Russian and Spencer playing well, especially Spencer round the ground. Does this mean we used the Russian affectively up forward as well? This is a really important area in round one as it is one of the Hawks biggest weaknesses, and we need to fill the likely non availabilty of Watts and liam. Anyone with comments who was there? If we can get this right it will give us a huge boost as Jamar has played very very effectively in the pivot in the past, and on his day is an excellent pack mark.

Exciting times.

Sorry...I should have clarified that in this game they were not ready.....have not seen other games.

From what I recall we didn't use either of them up forward. It was raining most of the game so our small forward set up was working ok. I agree with you about having to have a couple of talls against the hawks. At this stage we'll have Russian and Spencer rucking. You would excpect either of them could rest up forward.

So Frawley was excellent and Warnock good at full back. Can someone tell me whom played on Tippett?

Warnock did. The way the radio coverage had it you'd think he absolutely smashed warnock, though i think he did a good job,

who gave away the free!?

Warnock played on Tippett. Id say Tippett only touched the ball five times but took his chances and kicked 5. Tippett took an absolute hanger in the pocket!

Cant say I agree with you. I was at the game and thought all three of them did very well.

Glad someone else was at the game. I forgot to mention No.13...didn't know who he was as there was no name on the sheet. Have heard he is referred to as "pencil" and i see someone mention the name Tippet. Are they one and the same. Anyway No.13 got a lot of the ball plus made a few mistakes. (Must be human)

13 Is Jordie Mckenzie

who gave away the free!?

Warnock gave away the free as far as I know. The real question to my mind is whether it actually was a free. According to the radio coverage Tippet should have had a free kick every time the ball entered the Crows' 50, even when he was on the bench. Given that we'd been handling the high and long balls into the forward line quite comfortably all day, I don't see why Warnock would suddenly have decided to grab Tippet on that occasion, so I have to wonder if it was a friendly hometown decision. Obviously there is no way of telling from the only coverage we had here in Vic, so I'd love to here from someone who was there.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
