2009 Player Review - # 4 Jack Watts

I'd like to see a few games next year with Miller, Watts and Jurrah all playing forward and switching about.

I have basically given up on Miller being any better than average, but he has been around for a while and should know how to orgnaise a forward line. This would hopefully benefit Jurrah and Watts.

I still believe Brad will be ok with good delivery. He's a big unit.

Maybe it's more "want" but i still think Miller can be a class act. It's all confidence.

if Brad is still on the books come '10 then I would expecct him to be used ( as experimentation ) as a lead up half forward ( yes....again ).. . Here now things change as with Watts and Jurrah playing whatever roles on the forward line then Miller only really has to turn and put it into the danger zone. He ( BM ) doesnt need to concern himeslf with goals per se just delivering quickly into the forwards. . Possibly the rest best kept for the actual BM thread..lol

Watts... will get better .,...and better ...and better with each game and each kilo and continued fitness.

As the confidence grows down the sharp end so will the results :)

The problem with this scenario, is that Miller takes an eternity to make a decision.

In today's footy, half of the other teams midfield will have flooded back into our forward line by then.

playing miller is going backwards, my forward line would read aussie green jurrah hf watts bate sylvia

Clearly they believe that they'll be able to get enough work into him that he'll be able to make significant inroads next year.

In other words, I too believe that he'll be physically capable of playing most games next year due to the work he'll get through the preseason. Dappa is a very 'half empty' type of guy, so I understand 'cautious' approach.

I am?

I'm far more "glass-half-full" then certain posters... and mods for that matter. Anyone who backs PJ in the way I do has to have a BIT of GHF about them.

But fair enough. My cautious approach has served me well in the past. I didn't expect much of us in 2007 when others did. I think mostly I just aim a little under the accepted groupthink mentality... mostly to stave off disappointment. eg, I didn't think Jurrah would be anywhere near as good as he was this year. I thought those singing his praises were just effervescent dees supporters who love their players unconditionally, but as it turns out, there were those among them that knew all along how good he could be... The end result? A nice little surprise.

There are other players I hold massive concerns over that put me outside the main group on here. Blease is probably the biggest name there. Cheney I worry about too.

With Watts, however, I've been informed of certain tidbits of information that lead me to believe he's not going to feature a LOT next year. Or more specifically, that he's not expected to be given too much opportunity. Read into that what you will... but even if the sauce is a bit off, I think the chances are good that he won't be pushing Rich or Hurley next year. I expect him to do well, and certainly improve on 2009, but not to become the star #1 pick we all want and need him to be. In other words I think you can feel dees supporters on here itching for a Watts or Bennell or Jetta to have a breakout season in the way Garland, Frawley and Sylvia have in the last couple of seasons. I jst CNNOT see it happening, despite his obvious talent. I certainly expect it to happening either 2011, or 2012 though. In fact, I'm expecting a Riewoldt like quickening, as per when HE was in his early 20s.

If that's GHE, then I guess I'm GHE. Happy to be proven wrong though.

I'm not talking of a 'break-out' season.

I can't speak for all but I want Watts to play 16+ games. If he happens to play well in 5 of those games, well that's great.

Performances do not interest me, development does.

We need to give him games; if he is fit and his head is on straight - he plays.

I agree this is the weakness in this scenario... however he ( Miller ) has been playing on a lot more this season ( when there..lol ) . Often in the past he has looked up to see nothing.. he hesitates.. he's done !! If he's intructed to waste no time what so ever...eye up best option as quickly as possible and play on if poss....there is potential in this.

Watts-Jurrah...add in say Maric and one or two of a handful of other options and if delivered with confidence the defenders will have headaches.

Agree with this. When I wrote earlier that "by this time next year we'll be in no doubt that he's well worth his #1 pick", this was what I meant. Not that he'll be an out-and-out star by then, but that he'll show definite signs of what he's capable of, the player he's going to be.

This may happen simply with more game time. Others have remarked how this year he found space on his own a number of times but wasn't noticed by the ball-carrier. Once the mids are awake to this, work out where he runs to etc, they'll look for him more. Let's face it, the mids aren't used to the sight of someone in a Dees jumper on their own in the forward line!

Or else it may just be that his Vic Metro mates in Blease, Scully & Strauss, who know better how he plays, will look for him more and deliver to him better.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.
