Running Training Today

Saw the boys doing hill sprints today at the Botanical Gardens up a grass hill opposite the yarra river

looked as though most of the team was there

from a distance, they are looking very fit

they were in groups of about four, and i saw about 4-5 coaches, one of which i am almost certain is dean bailey, couldnt really make out who the other ones were from inside the car

most of them were doing sprints up the hill in the groups, walking down and then sprinting up again

what i thought was interesting was there was a group of four, doing a light hearted jog around the tan track in the city direction, one of whom was matty bate, and when i shouted out "go deees!" from the car window, bate looked over

-he is looking fairly fit so, i was wondering if these four were away from the main group for injury reasons of if they were just warming up/recovering...however, they did seem to be having a light hearted laugh over something so i presume it was a warm up or something

-i couldnt make out who the other three were

-and then about two hundred metres further down, running towards anderson street hill in the opposite direction to the bate group, was james mcdonald, who looked as though through body language that he was going through/was finishing a tough session, so maybe he was doing his own fitness program as he wasnt with the main group?

cant help much, but i thought that the other people that, like me, have the illness of getting extremely exited about progress in the pre season, might like to hear this information

Good news. Did you have the binoculars on?

How's the study?

Good call.

Was it just me or did Bate start to look really big this year, big around the shoulders & chest, not far off Miller's size?

I thought he was starting to look like he had some real size about him towards the end of the year, if he put on a bit of weight from when they took the measurement at the start of the year he could be up somewhere around +95kg. He doesn't really command his position well enough for his size, but i still have some slim hope of him turning into a more genuine KP player.

What did he look like out running? Bulked up or trim? they might not want him to get any bigger if he's meant to be playing more of a running role.

haha i THINK thats a good compliment.

I took monday off after a HUGE sunday session. When I went to pick my car up in the morning just near Junction Oval, I saw CC drive into the car park...

I ALMOST stayed around for a little while in case training was on, just to have a look, but I felt like the ultimate football tragic & instead went home to sleep off my hangover.

That just made me feel a little bit better. ;)

FYI, players with back tightness, previous back and hammy problems do not do any up hill running, it is the worst thing you can do. I think this would be why the others were training on the flat. Also, players with dodgy knees dont do up hill or down hill runs either.

Peace

Well you did say, "from a distance, the players looked very fit." I was wondering how far away you were (ie. distance), did you have binoculars with you?

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
