The Big V

Only two years ago there were many posters on this forum claiming that a Victorian team would never win another premiership and that the Interstate teams would dominate forever. Happily they were wrong and it is the Vics turn to dominate. Does this mean that the draft is working and that we, the mighty Dees will be clawing our way up the ladder faster than some people think. Are the people who have us failing miserably again next year the ones who were bemoaning Victoria's then lack of success? if so we might have too many pessimists in our midst. I guess all will be revealed come season 2009. Or being pessimistic, season 2010.

A valid comment

....one can only hope !!

may not be the express elevator though

Well despite the season from hell, I think it's definitely an exciting time to be a Melbourne supporter. When a team is in the state we're in, you just have to appreciate the small impovements from game to game. We good be anything at this stage, but the only way is up.

Bobby,

Its a good outcome but belies the financial disparity that characterises interstate clubs and Victorian Clubs.

If you compare the, membership, gate takings arrangements revenue turnover and profitability of WCE, Freo, Crows and compare it with clubs like MFC and NM, it shows its not a level playing field and how much harder it is for one of the lower level financial clubs to succeed in terms of facilities for players, sponsors and members, coaching and conditioning staff and sponsorship exposure.

Maybe it has coincided with the fact that Brisbane and Sydney no longer have 1st crack at their local players. It's handy when you can pick up the likes of Voss, Akermanis, Ashcroft and Charman for next to nothing (and they almost got Reiwoldt). Also, I think the additional allowance they received on their salary cap for player retention has been scrapped.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
