COLLECTIVE DEMONLAND SIDE FOR 2009

Featured Replies

Posted

It may satisfy all, or it may cause debate.......that's why it was an interesting excercise, so here is the final selected side to take the field in 2009!: -

(NOTE: - Just because some names are missing doesn't mean those players should necessarily be considered "Dee-listed" - they just didn't make our team due to voting!)

BACKS: WHELAN WARNOCK GARLAND

H-BACKS: RIVERS MARTIN C.JOHNSON

CENTRES: GREEN MOLONEY MORTON

H-FWDS: DAVEY BATE ROBERTSON

FWDS: SYLVIA MILLER WONAEAMIRRI

FOLL: P.JOHNSON McLEAN JONES

INT'CHANGE: C.BRUCE S.BUCKLEY S.VALENTI M.JAMAR

EMERG: J.GRIMES C.BARTRAM J.McDONALD

NOTE: M.Newton just missed out on Emergency List.

If you think Lynden Dunn or Ricky Petterd deserve (who were notable omissions from polling due to no other reason other than a 'brain fade') to be included in this side, please feel free to nominate who's place they should take and give your reason..

We'll do it all again after trade week...................

Cheers!

I'm pleased with that team.

Good effort HT, :)

Cheers...its a pretty good line up. Some will say Bruce should be in the 18 on the field, but because of his versatility it probably cost him votes in either category...

He still made the side.

I had Bruce on the back flank myself.

Its good to see the emergence of Martin, CJ, Garland & Warnock into key positions in the backline.

I've been really impressed with CJ's work ethic of late, and his hunger. If only we could bottle it! I didn't have him in my back 6, but he is one that has proven me wrong. Good on him!

pretty good side~!

the only real difference between that team and my personal best 22 would be:

Bell, JMac, Wheatley and Dunn i find a place in the starting 22...

While Frawley and Pettard are in my emergencies...

However at the end of the day, all the players i mentioned would be vying for the 15th-22nd place in the team, and none are core players, so i guess it's debatable...

I think it's worth mentioning that i have severe queries on whether Robertson will ever play again. He sustained an extremely serious injury which has ended many careers... he is 29 and relies on his spring.... we can only hope i guess but i personally am pessimistic.

EMERG: J.GRIMES

NOTE: M.Newton just missed out on Emergency List.

How can a player be listed who we havent seen play ath an AFL level yet????

Who would you take out though, to fit your selections in.............its hard isnt it?

The voters simply voted for him............which earned him a place ahead of a few seasoned campaigners....notably Wheatley.

Where's Wheatley??? Grimes makes emergency, Wheatly is overlooked?

Other than that, good effort HT.

Read above. Wheatley was put up for a nomination against other midfielders and centre line players - he wasn't considered in the defender catergory as more posters considered him more of a midfielder- winger than defender.

The votes simply didn't stack up for him in his favour.

Out of 77 voters, Paul Wheatley only received 7 votes when people voted their preferred best 6 midfielders.

S.VALENTI Why on earth would you have him in the side next year he has done little to anything good since he has been promoted he lacks speed, desision making and ball controll. Im sorry but he can go back to sandy next year and stay he is a great player there just not good enough for the AFL.

Congrats on signing up today, but please read the entire threads based on this topic. Its been going for over a week. Everyone's votes are based on this side. If you disagree or have an opinion about this side that is fine. Just letting you know you then that you disagree with a majority of voters.

Thanks mate figured it was all done by voting but still cant understand why anyone would have put him over a lot of other blokes in the team.

Its for a side for the 2009 season, perhaps many voters were looking to the future? As McDonald struggled to make the side, but also got in as an emergency, and Wheatley missed out altogether.

Voters obviously had been impressed with Valenti of late..........

i think this team is more focused towards the future.... which is great!

1) I personally would only have 3 key defenders in my starting defence because that's pretty top heavy- Martin to bench, Rivers to CHB and Wheatley half back.

2) I don't see Robbo playing again unfortunately due to the seriousness of his injury and his age- and i would put Pettard in his place--- i rate Pettard extremely highly i think he's one of our most talented youngsters.

3) S.Valenti has been promising, but Lynden Dunn gets the place instead of him on the bench for mine

4) S. Buckley looks a player of the future, but Newton is on my bench. i see signs in him, and we only have 1 true KPP in this team in Miller, so Newton becomes more important in the 22 than Buckley.

Emergencies for me: JMac, Frawley, Bartram, Buckley, Valenti, Bell--- all very unlucky to miss, and all could justifiably be on the bench or take the 17th or 18th spot on the field.

Fair enough. Good summary. It does look a little top heavy down back, but its the best on paper as voted by peers. On match day you could play another half a dozen players down back with the likes of Bruce, Wheatley, Bartram, Bell, Frawley, etc on Melbournes List.

Read above. Wheatley was put up for a nomination against other midfielders and centre line players - he wasn't considered in the defender catergory as more posters considered him more of a midfielder- winger than defender.

Ah OK then HT, well considering it's more of a team for the future I guess it doesn't really matter.

Not my side. Its collectively everyones side. Valenti happened to poll enough votes to make the cut.

I sense a hint of sarcasm when you say it really doesn't matter because its more of a team for the future.

Its been well highlighted numerous times when nominations opened in each category that it was for the best defenders, etc for the start of the 2009 season....you may have 'failed' to browse the thread on those occassions.

Wheatley is no good, clearly not in our best 22

wheately should be in our starting 18. And yes i do understand that it is a voting system!

easy. get rid of Warnock. his brother will have joined the dees by the time this side takes the field so there would be no more point in playing him.

Forget the haunting of Round 11 — we’ve got this. Melbourne returns to its inner-city fortress for its milestone 100th AFLW match, carrying a formidable 10–2 record at IKON Stadium. Brisbane’s record at the venue is more balanced: 4 wins, 4 losses and a draw.

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
