He a quality and highly player talented player who, I believe in time, will become an excellent defender for us.

What we’re seeing is a young player, hopelessly out of form who is under the immense pressure that comes with a trade and contract that he came with.

He is unable to play the same role he did at Adelaide and opposition teams are putting some serious work into him.  He, like Weitering at Carlton, looks to be playing without joy or confidence.

He is young, inexperienced and really struggling.

Exactly TPF why was he so good at the Crows but struggling with us? I suggest we look at the backline set up and game plan first before we crucify a new player. As for today, we were woeful in the middle and the backline takes the brunt of it all. How do you think some one like Josh Gibson would have faired for us today down back? A player used to playing a roving, attacking game off half back, like Lever, suddenly under siege, having to go man on man with bigger bodies, time and time again.

Very generous. Started off well but again showed he is limited skill wise. Early in the game had an easy hit up for Hogan and bombed it to no one, just not a one touch player. Seemed to play a lot at half forward, his development is just going around in circles.

After watching that debacle today the last player I would be questioning is Brayshaw! Not the best for us maybe, made some errors yes but kept battling on and getting a lot right by the way,  while many of his more experienced team mates went missing in action. Can’t make mistakes when you aren’t in the contest, how often have we seen this over the last 12 years. We had quite a few older heads not in the action when needed. I suggest you watch the replay WTM.

  3. Not sure what to make of his game today, 66 hit outs but there seems to an issue with midfield communications or set up. I saw him win numerous hit outs quite easily but how often to our full advantage? From boundary throw ins I saw him flip one out the back but to 2 Hawks, then flip a couple out wide to a nest of Hawks while our guys are on the inside, then when we had a throw in in our forward pocket in the 3rd but we had no one front and centre, all our guys lined up to the side and behind. Max then decisively knocked it straight forward down Sicily’s throat who promptly kicked long over our press and they scored a goal on the break, end to end. And that was the ball game. Dumb stuff but who is not talking to whom?

Interestingly enough Max dominated the tap outs enough to just make sure he tapped to where Mitchell wasn’t and maybe Jones then did not need to tag Mitchell and could have been more a creator than negator.

Would you care to advise the rest of us what recent years have had rapid global warming?

don’t forget this is measurable so the normal global warming scare into the future won’t work.

i’m guessing you will come up empty.

What’s your acceptable definition of rapid Wrecker,  given you only measure trends in millions of years?

Hawks lineup looks very weak on paper...  now granted that means little, but we should get the job done if we are serious.

I really hope we win this one as I looked at the Hawks draw in the Age today and they are not likely to drop a game after us till round 15! They play the lowly sides at the MCG and interstaters down at Launceston and the occasional game at Etihad. Looks like a dream draw from rounds 5 to 15.

Eddie McGuire announcing tonight that the State Government tipping in huge amounts of money for redevelopment of MCG. That is the good part.

He also announced that the AFL is, along with the State Government, spending money on developing Western Oval, Moorabbin, ikon Park (Princes Park) and of course Victoria Park.

There are further plans for the Docklands.

Guess who still has no training ground in the city and hasn't got anything other than money for that sheizenhole Casey? Can't help but think we are shafted again and have been left behind. Eddie everywhere has had a big hand in all this and we are nowhere again. All this money and nothing for the MFC.

We have been  speaking about a potential inner city home base for years and you'd think something may have come in this huge plan, but no, nothing.

I am happy to be made to look a fool of we announce something tomorrow, but certainly wasn't mentioned by Eddie.

What more development does the Gee need? Let’s build the northern stand higher to cast even more shadows over the ground.  Can’t we spend State $millions on something else, someone or something that needs it? Millions for the elite, stuff all for grass roots sport.

I hope the pressure is on 'Stretch', not saying it will be but if Weideman can fire it will certainly make selection interesting.

Tommy had some good games forward last year but I don't think he's a natural in that position. Certainly has good hands and running capacity.

This kind of selection dilemma would be a good problem to have though.

What a problem to have eh? If Weid made a case that he could not be dropped then I would be forced to play TMac on the wing, drifting forward, if not needed down back. He has to play, he is too good not to when in form and he provides leadership as well. I also want him forward because he is our most accurate set shot at goal. If we can increase our set shot accuracy by 20% we win an extra 3 or 4 games in my opinion, given our inside 50 numbers are so high because of our game plan to kick forward at all costs.

We held our stat-line quite well for a good portion of last year until the injuries began to bite and the midfield figures and then scoring dried up (as a rough and ready figure; we scored above 100 points 7 out of the first 12 matches until we played West Coast. Only once thereafter). I think we'd be pretty short odds to end up top-four for contested and centre clearances this year and so then inside-50s as well - though we have a fairly young midfield brigade still which might fade a fraction.

Well actually our stats held up reasonably well right through the major injuries. It was after round 15 that all our contested stats and scoring efficiency fell off a cliff, after we were starting to get experienced players back into the team. The only variables after round 15 were the lose of Bugg and  although Viney was still playing, he was hampered by his foot problem. Jones, Watts had all come back by round 15 but we kept losing.

  9. Rode my bike past Gosch’s this morning expecting they would be training. No training wasn’t on for the team but noticed the rehab group was in action over on the Punt Road side of the oval. Viney, TMac and AVB under the watchful eye of Crossy and several other assistant coaches/physio’s. Tom and Jack were doing repeated timed 20 meter sprints but we’re actually running at least 100 metres if that makes sense. They were running about 100m but only being timed between 2 cones about 20m apart I guess as Tom was registering a consistent 4.2 sec as yelled out by the timer on each run, Jack was somewhat slower.

AVB was doing a lot of agility work, silly walks, running on the spot, not much with the ball.

I wandered over to look at the Rebels in training which was very entertaining, they got smashed on the weekend in the second half and I think the coach told the players to bring their mouth guards as they were doing a match simulation with two teams and it was full on stuff. Big boys hitting each other hard but they don’t look fit compared to AFL players but then the game is not about endurance but short, explosive play and battering ram stuff.

I kept an eye on the rehab group and Tom and Jack were kicking short balls at each other, then doing a lot of leading and long kicking to Crossy and each other. Later they were doing goal kicking practice. When I left the boys were again running sprints with Crossy. AVB had left for AAMI by then with no ball use, I think he is a long way off although he looks to be in no way hindered in his movements. But that is the same for Jack and Tom they looked fine and unhindered on their movements so it must be so frustrating having these types of injuries!

I have a feeling that both Jetta (bump on Brown) and Frost (sling tackle on Anderson) will be suspended.

Jetta walking a bit gingerly when I saw him at Coburg today so may not be available anyway. But ai thought his bump yesterday was OK but unfortunately he made contact with Brown’s head that he was lowering into the contest. Not sure what Nev was supposed to do but that doesn’t register with the MRP.

    A few thoughts

    Frost, Welcome back son

    Clarry, Class when needed

    Oscar, Dreadful all day

    Max, Superstar in making

    Hogan, Outsmarted Col Klink

    Kent, Welcome back son

    Bugg, 4 Goals WOW

    Neal Bullen, Back to Casey

    Harmes, Drinks own bathwater

    Tracca, sublime all day

Re Oscar listening on the radio they said on a number of occasions that he had done everything humanely possible to stop Brown but couldn’t. Brown got 4 but 2 were from dubious frees by someone else. I think Oscar had a draw on the night.

Having not seen the entire game it's hard to comment completely, but if we didn't get torn apart in the ruck by a side featuring Goldstein and Brown, do we really need Pedersen back?

Good point but still worry about our small forward set up especially when we insist on kicking long into the forward line time and time again often without a tall to at least bring the ball to ground. The Hawks backline will have a field day  ext week picking off the high entries to no tall targets.  More than happy if our mids lowered their eyes to target our small forwards on the lead but they don’t.

    Some random thoughts.

The opening 15 minutes we were running 3-4 spares out of the backline, leaving Daw  all alone and then we kick it high to a contest. It made him look good and let them get out of our forwrd zone too easy. When the ball came out once it got past our zone they got goals out the back. We played much better with a man on man contest and fixed up the issue

North got a lot of goals from frees in what was one of the worst displays of umpiring I have seen this year. The free to Ben Brown for a ruck infringement late in the 2nd left me stunned yet 2 minutes later when Goldy shepherds Max out of the contest no whistle. Fortunately Bugg got take high and promptly missed with his free after the siren

We still miss a lot of set shots and Trac is better on the run

I like Clarry resting up forward. Jacobs wore him like a second skin and limited his possession but his 2 goals int he last quarter show what a weapon he can be resting up forward.

At round 3 we still have a lot of room for improvement espcially our forward efficiency but I expect Tommy Mac will straighten that up on his return.

Scott Thompson is a thug. His punch to Jessies head on the final siren is typical of his style for his whole career. I hope it gets reviewed

Re our use of two extra players running off the back of the square at centre bounces, Luke Ball on 774 was non plussed. He said we were winning the centre clearances 2 to 1 yet we’re then kicking into an out numbered forward set up, allowing Daws to look good. If you are dominating clearances why not man up in the forward line. Not sure how often the two extras running off half back had an impact at centre bounces though.

And if Hogan is going to play up the field we need another tall up forward. And did I hear correctly that Harmes and Trac were pinch hitting in the ruck? Bring back Pedo I think until TMac is fit.

What day do you expect them to train on? I would've thought a light run on Monday to stretch the legs, main session on Wednesday followed by a short sharp skills or touch session on Friday would be the way to structure a week with games on the Saturday's. The Tuesday/Thursday nights doesn't really apply these days.

Given they are full time professionals I wonder why they aren’t out on the field every day at least in preseason!  What do they do for the six days they train in the preseason months when they need to develop their skills and are not having to analyse their performances or their opposition coming up as might be the case during the season. Anyone know what they do for the other 4 days we don’t see them? I mean you can still fit in a gym session before or after a 1 or 2 hour run around the paddock kicking a ball. How many hours are needed to study the game plan that consists of kicking it forward at all costs?

  15. I thought Martin evened things up with Gawn, Lewis was a liability, but otherwise agree.

Hunt is worrying not sure what his problem is. Hasn’t gone on with it this season.

If we didn’t have Oliver in the guts I wonder if we would win a game. And that is a worry. We need Viney back as soon as.

  16. Not great. Now who wanted Garlett dropped after last week? He saved our bacon. Not a lot has changed, our midfield goes missing at crucial times. Bugg? One more chance, you have to kick them when you get the chance. I still think our game plan is deficient, as soon as we start to lose the contested possessions in the midfield we have no system to absorb pressure, use up time, deny possession etc.

Again we played a lowly side into form in the second half and made a tight game of it, why do we do that? I think we will struggle over the length of the season until we get Viney, TMac back and tweak our game plan to be more defensive.

Thought Frost and Kent were outstanding. Brayshaw tried hard and did some sublime things. Petty, Baker & Spargo all showed promise.
