Trac was fine at training this morning, train on Saturday to see if he can handball, mark etc, assume he will wear a guard

Hogan can train tomorrow and then Saturday, the fact he completed the game was a good sign, again though wait to see him run out on Sunday

Confirm what Goodwin said about Viney,  oustanding today, some pics tonight

Highlight today one on one battle between ANB and Nev Jetta, got a bit willing

Lot of emphasis today on contested work

Dropped by at training briefly today. I noticed Fritsch working with the mids with Gawn and Filpovic rucking against each other in boundary throw in simulations with 4 blues against 4 yellows trying to take the tap outs. The usual suspects, Clarrie, Jones, Viney, Lewis, Tyson, Harmes on the inside but Fritsch was playing an outside receiver role in the sims so maybe he will spend some time up on the wing?

This group then moved to the centre to do simulated centre hit outs. For some reason a bloke carried a large step ladder and set it up near the centre bounces. What for I could not fathom. Anyway on about the third simulated bounce and tap down Clarrie ran into the ladder receiving a handball in traffic. The ladder was duly removed from the field??

  2. TMac’s only problem will be AFL tempo. He is fit enough and has trained endlessly kicking for goal , circle work, repeat sprints, endurance laps but he hasn’t had to think and perform with limited time and space and that will be his problem. So hopefully we can create some time and space for him up forward.

The holding the ball rule is a mess.

No there is a pattern at least in our recent games, if we have the ascendancy, the umps will not pay anything regarding holding the ball, dragging it in or incorrect disposal and repeatedly ball up to add to the congestion.

Then next quarter when the momentum turns against us, any attempts by us to hold up the ball will be called and a free kick given in the intetests of openning up the game. It’s quite simple really.

  4. Senior leadership? We have Lewis, Vince and Jones then leaders like Viney, TMac. How much do we need? Quantity vs Quality is an area for discussion of course. Irrespective of leadership if Sloane or Gaff were interested yes we should investigate further. Gaff would be a great get for us but what chance?

  5.

I think we get too many players around the ball, we need to have some players hold off around the contest and not to sucked in.

I agree I was watching an old film yesterday Custer’s Last Stand with Errol Flynn and it was like watching the last quarter of the Hawks and Tigers games! With Max Gawn playing General Custer!

  6. How does Ryan Burton get off for the hit on Higgins? Knocked him into next week, but according to the MRP he didn’t mean it? If you choose to bump you wear the consequences. Higgins went to hospital so the the hit was high, deliberate and high impact. Yet somehow no issue. I thought the only way Burton would not get 3 weeks was if the MRP beamed that neither player saw each other before contact but that is not mentioned in the finding. They just say Burton could not have foreseen the consequences. Absolute rubbish. Yet Daniel Wells is deemed to be a dog for his hit on Selwood, yet he could also claim he wasn’t expecting Selwood to throw himself head first toward the ball. Wells should pay the price of choosing to bump as should Burton.

What’s up with Maynard? Was getting 30 plus disposals regularly last year, now struggling to get double figures. We seem to be struggling for ball magnets. JKH was one last year by the way.

Don't like some of the inns and worse SOME WHO ARE LUCKY TO BE THERE!

Stretch ? Shape up!! Career defining game methinks. If he doesn't cut it Gone!

Harmes?? don't know why and how he was retained LAST CHANCE SURELY?

    Nibbler?? Similar

Why you would keep Wagner and Drop Frost mystifies ME??

    Weeds?? time to perform.

    Melsksham?? owes a good game

    Jeffy? gee needs to lift!

Not at all confident and if we get flogged watch this site go into Meltdown!!

Happy that Stretch gets a go this week but yes he needs to show something on the outside.

Nibbler gets a go because we saw the stats, numerous pressure acts, distance covered, contests made, etc the stats that the coaches love.

Frost out because there isn’t a matchup

Weeds in, hasn’t done enough yet, I think

it should have been Pedo tall again forward.

Jeffy in because he does perform if the side/game plan performs. He needs space and time against one opponent and will win every time.

the whole port side were average, not just watts - although i thought he had a classic watts game in that he almost nearly but not quite did some very nice things, and then stuffed up too many

some other dees and pear supporting mates have a guessing game in which round he'll be dropped to the sanfl - i said by round 13; he's been dropped by every senior coach he's had, so it's bound to happen unless he gets the equivalent of jake melksham's free pass from simon goodwin from ken hinkley

this season is so unpredictable at this point in time - every team has ups and downs

except for wretched hawthorn, who're looking good AGAIN

Re the Hawks, my thoughts exactly, the competition has evened out and outcomes depend on the intensity shown by sides, except the Dorks who just execute their game plan and rack up the wins. I thought GWS would have gone to another level by now but they seem to be leveling off.

I know it's Dangerfield so probably won't happen but he should get many, many weeks for dumping Westoff head first into the turf off the ball.

That was a very dangerous action that could have had disastrous implications...

Yes saw that but they will move on and concentrate on Lindsay Thomas. He will go down but I am not sure it was that bad. Need to see the replay a few times more.

He is not a Stawell gift sprinter jnr but covers ground pretty well or it least he did in the first game when I saw him.

I am going to this game on Sunday so I hope he is not out injured.

competition was not great at Coburg but you can only beat the team on the day.

He was very good that day IMO he was in the top five players.

Balic was training on Tuesday and seemed to be moving freely.

Would much rather a player who would run half that amount but actually have an impact both with the ball in hand and when it’s in their area.

Posters believe he is playing his ‘role’ because he’s in the team. He might be playing, but he’s not performing at all. It’s no use winning the ball and then doing nothing with it.

He, like Harmes and Melksham (and some others), has started the season in a very underwhelming way.

Interesting isn’t it that after last year’s agonising miss of the finals, we were led to believe that the list was burning with desire to make amends this season. Well four games in they may be burning with desire but who is in form? Yes we have some important players injured but it seems nearly everyone is off their best form!

It is easier to say who is in form, Max, Jones, Oliver, OMac. The rest seem to have dropped a cog or two. As someone pointed out we had 3 players in the AA squad last year in the back half but now we have Hibberd battling, Lever and Jetta struggling and Hunt at Casey. As is Pedo and the small forwards are all struggling. Why is this so, changes in coaches and game plan or just one of those things that afflict us but not top clubs, e.g. Hawthorn?

    Hi

On Saturday night there was a suggestion that Balic had pulled a hamstring.

There was also suggestion it might have been cramp.

I assume from his absence from the injured list  that he is fine.

Wouldn't it be a great story if he comes good.

Balic was training this morning and looked to be moving OK. Also Dom Tyson was running around and looked good. The Casey boys were training didn’t see any seniors training. TMac was kicking footballs and doing sprints, no Viney or AVB but I only rode past and watched for about 5 minutes.

I too, am very disappointed, but I don't think our problems are psychological or deep seated. After all  the club at least, at the off field executive level has made enormous strides, We have an excellent CEO and a good president and administration-no more advertising executives, worn out politicians or tennis players, I think the record is a bit less flattering with the coaching staff however.   I am yet to be convinced that a "losing culture" tag bears close scrutiny. Terms like these and "The curse of Norm Smith" are too easy to bandy around and while prattling on about getting rid of a soft or losing culture sounds impressive and provides carrion for the media vultures. it is essentially a very nebulous term because it is difficult to analyse.

The facts are these: Melbourne had allowed its culture to degenerate to the extent that in the 2000s the playing  group had been allowed to exert far more influence than they warranted, Melbourne had for many years become a retirement village for players in semi-retirement, Pickett, Pitt, Egan, to name a few. The recruiting targeting highly skilled players who were not tough enough, either mentally or physically to make the transition to AFL. Of course we also had notable incidents particularly Brent Maloney's off field exploits as well as those of our Could o'been champion Colin Sylvia. In what was a massive mistake in trying to correct this situation we recruited a disciplinarian, unfortunately he couldn't coach.

But these days things have changed. Very few of the playing group, predate Paul Roos and quite a few would never have heard of Norm Smith, much less his spectre!  Our recruiting has generally improved so much that now we have young men presenting themselves as professional footballers who have few "psychological problems" at least football ones relating to a soft culture. I didn't see too much softness on the day, Brayshaw, in particular was hard at the ball and didn't take a backward step and Jones as always showed what a toughnut he is in blanketing Mitchell.

No rather our loss, relates purely and simply to faults with the senior coaching staff and the lack of adaptability in our game plan.  I did some research into this and came upon an excellent snippet on how to play wet weather football by the Richmond Assistant coach Craig McCrae. He talks about the need to adapt the game plan in wet weather. Players are drilled so extensively that reactions become inbuilt so that it isn't easy to adapt. Richmond uses their runner to reinforce the need to adapt to the situation. We didn't, and without singling out one player for criticism, it was particularly notable with Petracca who played dry weather football with disastrous results. From a champion last week to a fumbling fool in the wet.

So how should we have played? Well according to McCrae Richmond plays wet weather football with the following dictums:

1 Never go backwards, especially handballing -handball kicking, dribbling or tapping the ball forwards is the go,

2 Kick at the goals, not to a player or pack around the goal square from a long way out It is likely that the ball will skid through.

3 Constantly reinforce the change in game plan through the runners.

I saw none of this in evidence last Sunday. I also same a lack of defence on the rebound. This is in part down to the coaching staff.

That, in my opinion is why we lost. However if the proponents of the soft culture myth have any spells or potions to counter this wizardry please let us all know

Certainly the Hawks were doing dictum 1 relentlessly, just pushing the ball forward at all costs, running in numbers, always keeping the ball in front of them. Once you let the ball through and behind you, you are in trouble and how many times did I see our players overrun the ball?

Line in the sand for Goodwin...

I was off selling Miles Davis and Charles Mingus Records at the local market and got home to the mountains for the start of the second quarter opened the Glenfiddick and sat to watch us deestroy the ‘awks and then bugger bugger bugger.

Goodwin needs to assert some sense of direction now in one of two ways he can either treat it as an aberration or get strong and nasty.

OUT... Frost, Bugg, Fritsch, Petraccca, Harmes, Melksham, Jetta, Garlett, Wagner

In... Weed, Hannan, Baker, Tyson, Maynard, Stretch, Hunt, JKH, King

Would not be dropping the Tracc or Jeffy any time soon. Others are up for discussion I suppose. Poor Jeffy he has a certain skill set that depends on finding himself one on one in an open forward line where he can exploit his speed and an uncanny ability to squeeze a goal from any angle. That depends on the team intercepting opposition attacks and rebounding the ball quickly over the back for Jeff. Do that and Jeffy will kick the goals. But against both Geelong and the Hawks we failed to execute one intercept and do a quite rebound. Game plan deficiencies big time I think.

The most damning stat was just posted by Gerard Whately on AFL 360. Under Goodwin and his all out attack game plan in the last 25 games we have allowed the opposition to score a run of unanswered goals  (4 or more) in 21 of those games.

Any wonder Roos has stated we are the easiest team to score against. Minimum of 4 unanswered goals and in some cases more. How can you possibly have aspirations for finals if you cannot defend. Goodwin and the coaching staff need to address this and back off on the all out attack.

And what do we gain from such a high press? It’s one thing to rely on winning the contested ball in the midfield and relentlessly bomb the ball forward to rack up the inside 50 count and hope for a winning score, but does that need such a high press forward by the backs? As we have seen in our two loses the opposition can intercept and bomb back over our press with ease.

On Sunday in the second half the Hawks set up a defensive ring behind our players in their half and we could not find a way out despite our attempts to barrel one out the back. However they were able to do so with ease.

So after all that waffle my simple question is what do we gain from the high press and why is it part of our game plan?
