  1. To bring some sense to it Ash, you are as much a chance to play finals as anyone else. Your chances will depend like most others on injury and the season that your senior players in Lloyd, Lucas, Fletcher and McPhee have, as well as your ageing midfielders in Peverill, Johnson etc. If your key forwards and Fletcher are out or have bad years the season is over in my humble opinion. Not really much different to everybody else.

I agree entirely. Really, we are in a rebuilding stage. We won't have Fletcher, Johnson, Lloyd, Lucus etc around forever, and despite what alot think, we actually have a bit of young talent on our list, but it's the middle age players we are missing. Those 80-150 game players that seem to make up the bulk of most premiership teams.

I doubt we'll play finals in 2008 to be honest, but I doubt we'll win the spoon either.

Still, if Yze_Magic could just confirm for me that in his opinion we are no chance of playing finals, I'll go into the season with a little more confidence. ;)

  2. Wont need to trade, Ash

    The formula is simple

Add 1 Matthew Knights as coach

Allow Matthew Lloyd to remain captain

    Lose 1 James Hird

    Lose 1 Kevn Sheedy

The finished product will look like a shiny wooden spoon

Excellent, I thought you'd say that. Actually, I was hoping you'd say that.

I now know that we are one team that won't win the Wooden spoon next season.

Yze_Magic strikes again. Awesome stuff mate.

I assume in your opinion we are no chance to play finals then.

  3. Whats so funny Ash?

Bate is a freak. He has all the tools, and I think Bailey will turn him into a superstar

Bate is already the best player in the AFL at kicking goals outside 50

And you are judging that on the 27 goals he has kicked in his 33 games so far?

No mate seriously, it's all very amusing. Whatever you do, don't change your style.

I notice you mention your strike is down to 85%. What brought it down cos I swear you were telling us you were hovering around the 98% mark at some stage this year.

Was it the countless weeks Melbourne lost this season after you predicted a 7-10 goal win, or was it the Chris Judd prediction, or maybe the Brett Ratten to coach Melbourne statement.

As usual, I need your help, cos I've lost track.

  4. Yze_Magic jinxes every positive thing he prophesises about the MFC.

We will never never win a flag as he 'sees' it every year and it is jinxed.

My mission is clear. I have to kill Yze_Magic.:ph34r:

You beat me to it Geddy Lee.

I was about to say "Well, I can cross Melbourne off the list of Premiership contenders for next season".

Yze_Magic, and his predictions, are 15 other clubs best friend.

Don't know if I want to kill him though.

  5. Maybe im wrong, but don't clubs have to use picks that are traded to them?

Don't think there'll be much left in the draft that late.

Used to be the case, but the rules have changed.

Anyway, can't they use their last pick to get that Donohue kid under father/son.

  6. Adelaide is making the early running on the final day of trade week. It just recruited defender Brad Symes from Port Adelaide in exchange for pick No.28 - which the Crows had received from Sydney in the Marty Mattner deal.

Roos ruckman Brad Moran will now call Adelaide home.

The Kangaroos traded the 200cm big man to the Crows for pick No.37 in this year's NAB AFL Draft.

So the Crows have virtually swapped Meesen for Moran, and Mattner for Symes.

Plus they'll get a pick from the Bulldogs for Ben Hudson.

  7. Sour grapes or reality?

    A bit of both perhaps.

The following Meesen history is from a Bigfooty moderator NikkiNoo:

He is a ruckman and they take longer to develop. Maric and Messen were drafted in the same draft, Messen in the first round. Griffin was also rookied in the same year. Meesen was the better talent all round and has a great aerobic engine. So much so that Maric has worked harder to match up to him.

Griffin spent most of his first year playing reserves for Centrals (hard to break into that team!) but Maric and Meesen were pretty much playing firsts for their respective sanfl sides.

We had Hudson, Clarke and Biglands as our main rucking options.

End of 2005 and Hudson does his knee, Clarke agrees to stay on for another year to help us cover the loss of Hudson. Clarke gets injured early in the season now a spot is up for grabs by Maric or Messen, Maric gets it as his form in the sanfl had been superior to Meesen's. He grabs the opportunity and plays a couple of games that season.

2006 PF and Biglands does his knee, Clarke decides to retire (and is subsequently then convinced by the Saints to help them for one final crack at a flag). So there you have it two ruckman down for 2007 season but Messen wants only agrees to a one year option with the club even though Maric signed a two year deal. The club upgrades Griffin to the main list.

2007 - starts off promising for Meesen until 2 minutes into his debut in round 1 of the nab cup and injures his knee. Spends half the season recovering. Maric has also been injured around the same time with a hip issue. Griffin makes his debut and shows glimpses as to why Bassett has stated before that Griffin actually has the better upside than Maric and Meesen. Maric comes back and after a couple of games in the reserves is brought straight into ports main team. Meesen languishes in the reserves for norwood for a while. Finally makes it into Norwoods main side and makes his debut for Adelaide late in the season.

Obviously had injury concerns along the way, but hardly sounds like the next Polly Farmer.

Probably worth a punt for pick 37.

  8. The other rumour relating to TJ going to Brisbane was :

Cameron Wood to Collingwood for pick 14.

Brisbane then on-trading pick 14 to Melbourne for TJ.

It's just a rumour I heard. I doubt Cam Wood is worth pick 14, so it could be crap.

  9. Ash, have the Bombers ever played him in the ruck? He played as a ruckman in the Teal Cup, though he was playing as a wingman for his WAFL club. And is he under contract?

Personally, if he's out of contract, i'd take him in the psd, and develop him as a ruckman. He's mobile, and has a better skill base than either Jamar or Johnson.

Can't remember him playing ruck for Essendon too much. He might be able to compete with a Josh Fraser or Jeff White type ruckman, but the bigger ruckmen would just push him aside.

Not sure of his contract status.

  10. I don't rate Kepler, never have.

One thing I would say, is that in his 49 senior games, he has probably played 4 or 5 really good AFL standard games. And all of them would have been as a forward.

Because we have had Lucas, Lloyd, Hird, even Courtney Johns as preferred key forwards, he has been forced to play key defensive positions, and he just ain't up to it.

As a junior, he played on a wing, and could out run opponents who were as big as him, or out mark opponents who were smaller than him. But in the AFL, he isn't quick enough or strong enough to do either.

Another club might get more out of him, but I'm probably the wrong bloke to ask cos I have never thought he would ever make it as an AFL player. Others might see more in him.

  11. Bombers

    Gain: Drew Petrie

Lose: Kepler Bradley, Ricky Dyson, pick 22.

Hey, just to save time, perhaps Essendon could just unbuckle our pants and bend over.

Petrie is barely worth pick 22 on his own.

Kangaroos are looking to bolster key position players, yet are trading away Petrie? For Bradley?

You must have spies in every AFL club to come up with this. Seem to have the whole of trade week covered.
