  1. Looks like Aarons brother Alwyn is carrying the family tradition well, this from Todays Age at

    Essendon training:

"Having been desperate to inject pace into a treacle-like midfield, the club made no secret of its determination to recruit players of pace.

Three players broke the club's 20-metre sprint record held by Courtenay Dempsey — Alwyn Davey (brother of Aaron and clearly also beneficiary of the family's speed), Bachar Houli and Dempsey himself."

I hope they can actually play football though. We've used early picks in the past to draft quick players [shane Harvey, Darren Walsh, Jason Winderlich] but those guys have failed to make an impact.

Bachar Houli looks like being one of those freak athletes. According to the Essendon FC website : in early testing he equalled the club record of 2.75 seconds for the 20-metre sprint and then ran 10 minutes 43 seconds in the 3.2km time trial.

His early impressive results also included finishing first in the Jack Clarke Trophy – an inaugural 3km match race against the Geelong Football Club as part of the Ron Clarke Classic.

As I said, I hope these young blokes can get a kick.

  2. Ron Barassi, Ivor Warne-Smith, Robert Flower, Garry Lyon and David Neitz would be my top 5.

Not that I saw Ivor W-S or Barassi play, but from what I've heard and read, they were outstanding.

Probably Flower and Barassi are the top 2, very difficult to split. Barassi had premiership sucess, and Flower was just an absolute legend.

  3. Oh, and Ash, don't forget to keep taping "From the Vault" and adding to the highlight package!!

Yes, that's a very good source for Flower highlights. Especially this time of year, they seem to churn out plenty of the old stuff. Actually, since I put the DVD together, I've picked up another couple Robbie moments.

That's why I'm waiting until Hird retires before I start to construct his highlights package.

  4. Great efforts fella's, the DVD is just great. What a player. The more I look at Robbie the more I think he's in the Hird mould but just a little better (sorry Ash)!!

Don't apologise Fan. Both Flower and Hird are out and out champions. I think that anyone who loves AFL football, no matter what team you support, should feel pretty lucky to have witnessed these two legends play over the last 25 odd years.

Perhaps my next project could be a combined DVD of Flower and Hird.

  5. Ash - does it have Robbie's magnificent run from the back pocket to hff and goal at Windy Hill?

Unfortunately no. I've heard alot about this goal, but are yet to see it.

Thanks to the wonders of Fox Footy in the off-season, my Robert Flower highlights library is growing by the month.

I did a little bit of prep work for the video last night, and one thing I noticed was his exceptional marking ability. For all his poise and grace on the ground, Flower was an incredibly strong aerialist.

Obviously this would be one of the reason he was also able to play key positions on occasions, eg. state game vs WA in 1982.

  6. OK, I'll whip up another Robbie Flower highlights video tape, but I don't have the machine that burns it onto DVD.

If anyone does has access to such a machine, let me know, and we'll work something out.

Comparing Robert Flower to a current day player is difficult.

Perhaps a much more consistent Travis Johnstone, but alot better mark, who kicked more goals, and was a super leader and captain might come close.
