I’m not giving up on Young until Luke Jackson’s name is called out or the club release something before next week stating their intentions.
-
You make a good case, I should probably hold my fire until this time next week after we’ve seen where the cards have fallen. I mentioned earlier tonight that I still think that Jackson isn’t a lock at 3, we clearly have a strategy, I know that sounds like an obvious comment, but in recent years I feel our draft selections were influenced by outside noise. I don’t mind the look of Stephens and it will be interesting to see when Pickett goes. I think there’s still a surprise to come.

I’m not initially a fan of this, would obviously love to know what they’re thinking. Stop diluting the talent.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - LUKE JACKSON

I don’t think it’s the done deal that many think it is. We made a preliminary two years ago, we brought in May to handle the big forwards, we still haven’t addressed our other need. Jackson might become a good player but he’s not going fix our disposal problem. -

Look at the Giants list as it stands now, they don’t want for much. If they get Jackson they would have to arguably have the best all round list bar Richmond. For them Jackson would be a pick for needs not necessarily best available. They just picked up Jacobs as a stop gap, their list is so talented they can afford to carry Jackson while he develops, we don’t have that luxury. I live in Sydney and watch a lot of GWS games on free to air, they can move the ball from one end to the other at will (obviously the GF being the exception) by foot and then put it out in front of one of their forwards. We can’t, we continually kill ourselves through turnovers from poor disposal and poor decision making. Just my thoughts and I know many won’t agree. As I mentioned in another thread I’d take Young and Ash at 8 if he’s there. -
Whilst I’m happy with the additions of Langdon and Tomlinson are we so naive to think we’re out of the woods now with our ball movement? Young and Ash for me.

I don’t people are ignoring the possibility, a few posters have asked the question of is there any footage of him playing forward and having shots on goal. -

Article on the AFL website about Young. 30 seconds of footage of one of his trademark passes, worth a look. -

Is Young purely a half back, surely there’s scope for for him to play other positions. Our team lacks good users of the ball by foot, Young would not be surplus to our needs. I think it’s too early for Jackson to be described as “the caliber of Grundy and Gawn”. His highlights had him dominating the ruck but his disposal by foot wasn’t great. Would like to see some footage of him taking some big pack marks and his set shots on goal before using pick 3 on him. He doesn’t mind getting physical which is obviously a good thing. If he could dominate the fwd line then by all means but until then.... Considering where we finished in 2018 and then last year, I still think we need to use our picks on players that can kick. With our draw we should be playing finals but based on last year obviously nothing can be taken for granted. In another year if things were different I’d be all in for him but right now I don’t think we can afford the risk. I personally would take Young and Ash/Stephens. -

Another speculation piece on who we might take. -
Needs to work on his set shots, yes he’s improved that area of his game slightly but he could of easily had a lot more to his name.

He definitely has some good attributes and has a bit of X factor about him, but I wouldn’t personally take him unless there is a proven history of pack marking and ability to kick goals (accuracy and range). If he doesn’t have those skills now I would look to those that have other ready made skills that we need, kicking and speed. -

For anyone who might know, Jackson’s ability to take a pack mark, and his set shots on goal (accuracy and range). The answer to those two questions would go a long way to the decision being a yes or a no. A lot of people throwing around “upside” and “potential”, we’re still waiting for Petracca to live up to his. -

Yes we do, ultimately we don’t have a choice, just opinions. -

I’ve read comments along the lines of.... Hayden Young : “He’s a meat a potatoes kind of player“ Because we already have a team full of elite users of the ball by foot. Dylan Stephens : “His highlights look good but I can’t see him him getting that kind of time and space in the AFL” We have numerous players who continually miss easy set shots on goal or look to pass off rather than take the shots themselves. What if we applied that same logic to Jackson’s highlights.... -

I don’t know about anyone else but I would of thought Petracca fits that summary better than anybody. -
Are we expressing interest in Jackson with no intent of taking him so another club grabs him allowing others to slide to us?

Dylan Stephens (Drafted by Sydney)
Bombay Airconditioning replied to Dees247's topic in Melbourne Demons
For me Moonie it’s not a case of is he more of an inside or outside player, but that he’s is a player that wants to take the game on and takes ownership of it. We’ve had players in recent years that pass off when running inside fifty rather than take the shot, team rule or afraid of missing? Players having set shots on goal, twenty to thirty metres out with little angle, trying to kick around their body only to miss. It’s almost as if some players don’t want the responsibility. -

Who was the last player from our team to get the ball from the stoppage and burst inside fifty to kick a goal? So what if he was third in the chain of possessions, that’s his role and he nails it. He manages to find himself in the right spot on numerous occasions and uses the ball well by foot. I hope we’re looking at him at pick 8 should he still be available. -

Could we not say the same about all the players in the draft. -
All things considered it’s not that bad, considering next year is our away ANZAC and QB games we cannot afford a repeat of last season. Lots of Sunday games but if we’re being honest besides Melbourne supporters no one wants to watch us play at the moment.

I can’t wait to put Hibberd in my best pre season best 22.

For some posters it’s not ok to pot JKH and Stretch but for Frost it’s open season.

Not thread related.... Jetstar has a sale on with free return flights for the months of April, May and June 2020. Bit hard though considering the draw isn’t out yet. So we booked our flights for QB, the only assured game at the moment. If you live interstate it’s worth having a look.
