Like to hear more on how it would work at AFL level and how it works in other sports

I have an open mind on the subject at present.

I'm unsure of how it would work in the AFL, I follow the NHL closely and they have a trade deadline around early March each year just prior to the play-offs commencing.

Teams vying for a play-off spot will look to acquire a seasoned veteran or a consistent scorer to enhance their chances whilst a team with no chance of making the play-offs will look to offload veterans to acquire young prospects or draft picks for future seasons.

Its basically a period of increased player movement. That's a simplistic way of explaining it.

The NHL regular season commences in early October and ends in early April.

Each team have a full five months to sort out their specific needs by the time the deadline arrives.

In the AFL after five months we are at finals stage, not sure how they could manage a trade period mid-season in a shorter time frame.

Edit: Players that are signed by an NHL team participating in the play-offs prior to the deadline might only get signed up for the upcoming play-offs and can get offloaded to another team for the next season.

  2.  Hi all.

Dan Zephyr has accepted on Ballarat Cup day.

Lumped with 61kg but Jack Martin will take the ride and claim the 3kg. Once again unlucky drawing barrier 14.

Will have more updates later in the week to determine whether the horse is worth a buck or two.

Really enjoyed season 2 of 'Stranger Things' D77 ... watched it with the family and found it to be wonderful entertainment.   The music accompanying the show was fabulous too.  9/10 for me.

Am going to start watching 'Chance' ... know very little about the show apart from a brief outline of the plot and that it stars Hugh Laurie.  He was fantastic in 'The Night Manager' so I probably won't be disappointed with this new show.

Edit: Watched the first 2 episodes of 'Chance' and it's very very good.   A psychological thriller with some 'Breaking Bad' type elements.  Laurie is great as usual.

Hi Macca, we finished season 2 of 'Stranger Things' a few days ago. We thought it was brilliant entertainment.

Knew very little about the show, so glad I had a look at this thread.

I'll put 'Chance' on the list, we enjoy the thrillers, cheers.

We need to watch as much TV as possible to combat the long wait for the ' Game Of Thrones' finale.

That second game was brilliant, I just love seeing Jetta play so we’ll alongside the other stars of the game.

We see it time and time again, but how good is the Jetta sidestep?

Great to hear the Perth crowd cheer when he left a couple of Irish players standing still.

It was so home. They were lining up in the que to collect! Your mate would be [censored] at that one. Jockey rode well i thought? I think ive heard of El Magnificence. Yes definitely keep me posted. We have the Ballarat Cup here in a few weeks. Ill post if i hear anything......

    Looking forward to it.

Yes, McLeod rode much better today, my mate is still in a bit of shock after losing to that horse.

The eventual winner trialled and finished 9.8 lengths 5th of 5 last month at Echuca.

Lol, you just have to love racing!

It was home!!....then that horse came from the clouds.....bad luck. A horse that had been away from the track for 2 years because of injury, chooses your race to make a comeback. Had a bit on for the place so very happy with that. Thanks D77. Let me know when its running again! :)

Thought it was home also, had my friend on the phone and he said the same thing.

Beaten by a horse that's been out since January 2015 and the only horse to make ground from the back all day.

    That's racing though!

Will definitely keep you posted on future runs, my friend also part owns a stablemate called El Magnificence which has shown some promise with a 4th and win in his only two starts. Currently spelling but when it returns it could be one to keep an eye out on.

Cheers D77. Yes get back with the final update. Gotta love a bit of inside mail, although connections can be a wee bit too positive sometimes......but you always allow for that. Will follow regardless.

    Final word.

Horse has travelled well, looking to get a sit one out one back.

There's a possibility the pace won't be on early so he could end up leading if he can't get a sit behind the leaders.

They are there to win today, hopefully the horse fires.

Hope that helps, this is not a certain tip by any means.

I would be a tad upset if he got up and I didn't have a dollar on it, it would be nice if some fellow demonlanders were on it if it gets up.

    Good luck all.

My thoughts exactly. Connections most of the time think their horses have a decent chance of winning a race.

Rhys McLeod rode a horrible race last start and they are a bit worried about him being on board again.

I have followed the horse from day 1 as I sold out of him when he was a 3 year old. It's more of an interest for me these days.

Pat Carey has given the horse every chance of winning by his training for this race, it's just comes down to the horse being good enough tomorrow.

I had a quick look at Ararat on the Tote.......Dan Zephyr was 39. Great odds!

The horse has trained well and connections think he's a good chance.

Best fixed I have seen so far is $13. They thought the horse might be longer odds than that.

The aim is to be on pace again and hoping the horse gets an easy run across from the wide barrier.

He will get back to me tomorrow lunchtime with the final thoughts and I will post an update.

Hope you all had a good final day of the Flemington carnival.

Yes indeed do that D77. Dont mind having the odd punt in the country, since i live in it these days! I have had a horse go around in the country and its a tough gig!!

I used to live in Malmsbury and the Mnt Macedon strappers used to come down to the Malmsbury Hotel and have a beer or 7. They were all over Green Moon the year it won, telling anyone who would listen. The pub went till very late that particular Tuesday evening. So i dont mind a horse tale!

    https://www.racing.com/horses/dan-zephyr

Here is the form of your mates horse. It hasn't done much lately, but has had some red hot patches earlier in its career. It will be a good price anyway. Each way perhaps? Keep us posted.

    Nice tale Wadda.

Dan Zephyr was certainly hot a couple of years ago winning 3 in a row in town. My mate is not a fan of Rhys McLeod but he seems to be the Pat Carey stable jockey.

Michael Dee has a better strike rate on the horse.

I see it's drawn wide and does it's best racing on pace so it might have to work early unless they change tactics.

I'll have a go at the feature races tomorrow (races 7 & 8) ... the races were formally known as the Victoria Racing Club Stakes & the LKS McKinnon Stakes (I'm old school)

Can't go past the speedy Redzel in race 7 ... there are a number of other chances but I don't mind Vega Magic either.  Missrock may run on.

And I'll give Tosen Stardom another chance in race 8 ... the other 2 Weir horses could feature (Gailo Chop & Cliff's Edge)

As always,  it's the trifecta & first 4 for me.  Just missed on Oaks day so am looking for a win.

Missrock has been a tad costly for me in the past but at those odds she might be worth a little each way.

If it's a hot pace she may indeed run on Macca.

Last day of the carnival tomorrow. I was on Bring me Roses on Oaks Day and it paid ok for the place. great run winner too good. Gai and Mr Bott have something like a strike rate of 33% this carnival. Anybody have any standouts? The pools are still pretty good. Definately some bargains out there. I got Tosen Stardom at 11/1 yesterday. Back to the 2000m hoping he strikes again. I see Aiden Obriens Taj Mahal at 34s is def overs. Gailo Chop for DK Weir is also overs at 8.00.

Can Chautaqua do it one more time after being scratched at the barriers last start? I also like Redkirk Warrior in that race. As for the rest, cant go past Geelong Cup winner Venguer Masque and Gallic Chieftain in the Queen Elizabeth. Other races too hard for me. What do you guys think?

I did like Tom Melbourne when markets first opened up but I see they scratched it so I'll have to do some more reading later on.

On another note a friends horse is running on Sunday at Ararat in the China Bowl. Dan Zephyr is the name, he won the same race last year. Connections bypassed a Group 3 at Flemington for this race.

The horse is 3rd up this preparation, last run wasn't very good but first up he was unlucky as he was boxed in and couldn't get a clear run.

I'll have more information tomorrow to see if it's worth a few bucks.

Really, wow. 73kg! Is that common over there? Seems harsh. Did he have an injury.....?

Yes he was hindered by injury since the 2015 cup but reportedly still possesses a devastating sprint.

73kg is excessive, not sure how common that is over there.

Being a quality horse maybe that was his penalty in such a weak handicap.

He paid a whopping $1.40 that day.

Max certainly has the points on the board a la 2015 behind Penzance.... Does anyone know if he ran last year? I cant remember....

Good morning, no he didn't, he's only had 4 runs since the 2015 cup.

He won last start overseas carrying 73kg in what I believe was an $18,000 race. Smart move I guess. Comes in at a good weight.

  16. Round 22 vs Hawthorn 1996.

The narrowest of losses but that match was a classic in front of a big crowd.

A heap of highlights in that game.

Dunstall 10 on the night and 100 for the season, Neitz 4 in the first quarter and finishes with 6 and the Wiz turning the match on its head with a 3 goal burst in 5 minutes during the third.
