  1. I seem to remember Col junior coach saying something like "We just tell him to get the ball" why not just let him do that in the middle?

He clearly has the build for it and Nate Jones needs help! Has Col spent much time in the middle as an inside mid? He always seems to be named on the HFF

the coach needs to be better with Sylvia. He is an OK forward, but a very good midfielder. needs to be played in the centre. Maybe with Grimes out Trengove or Sylvia will be stuck in the middle?

  2. Here is list comparing our 100+ gamers to the next worse Victorian team in the Bulldogs and also some highly rated opposition.

My knowledge of other teams playing group is not as great as it is with the dees, but I'll have a guess at clubs best 22 makeup.

Demons: 9 players 100+ five, arguably six of these are best 22

    Bulldogs: 9 players 100+ 8/9 best 22

Magpies: 17 players 100+ 12/17 comfortably best 22 with the rest being solid replacements

    Hawks: 14 players 100+ 13/14 are best 22

    Cats: 16 players 100+ 15/16 are best 22

    Swants: 13 players 100+ 12/13 are best 22

    Now here is a collection of random thoughts;

    • We have the fewest number of best 22 players with over 100 games experience.
    • Only Jones and Frawley can say that they put consistent games week in week out (I know Frawley hasn't had the best start to the year but he is a quality defender putting up with a barrage of inside 50's every single week). So we have a total of two players that we can safely rely on in a week to week basis to perform to a high standard. Compare that to the Magpies who have a dozen players with greater than 100 games experience who put in consistent high quality football.
    • Scarily, this is just looking at it from a quantitative perspective. I think we all know about the quality footballers with experience in the top opposition teams compared to the lack thereof in our own.
    • We are going to be in for a world of hurt for a lot longer unless we can trade in or win over some high quality free agents at the end of the season. We are in desperate need for on field leaders with experience.
    • With all due respect to Sylvia and Jones, it is an embarrassment to see them run out as our most experienced players on a weekly basis... they're 27 and 25 ffs.
    • Jack Trengove is our 13th most experienced player out of 45 listed players with 64 games at 21 years of age. Watts is our 16th most experienced with 59 games at 22years.
    • Our 22nd most experienced player is a 3rd year player with 25 games under his belt in Tom McDonald. Collingwood's 22nd most experienced is Nathan Brown with 74.
    • What I would give to acquire two or three free agents in Lenny Hayes, James Bartel, Sam Mitchell if only for a year or two.

Amazing post.. spot on, list hasnt played enough

  3. A gun with a warped barrel and no sight - 44% disposal efficiency

He shanked a few in the first quarter, but the last 3 quarters were good from Col

    Poor Col Sylvia cant win....

I have been his harshest critic because i believe he has everything to be a top 10 footballer in the league ( except between the ears).

So we have lambasted him for not giving a rats and whilst he absolutely butchered it and tried to do too much yesterday I see a footballer at least who is having a red hot go.

With so much to complain about at the moment, Colin Sylvia is not one of my major complaints.

someone agrees, we give him so much flak, but for real he is giving it a go finally. Col is playing well and has for already a fair bit now. Had a poor round 2, but other than that was great.

Especially in the GWS and West Coast matches.

  4. There are roughly 8-10 midfield positions open at Melbourne every week! Sylvia is still not running hard enough or winning contested ball well enough to be cemented in the worst midfield in the league. He's a flanker with nice ability to get up the ground and turn back. Of course he kicks goals, thats what happens when you burn 4 open team mates and wheel on to your left from 50 out. It's all continued poor discipline and team footy.

    that is complete shower.

He is one of the only ones that is explosive enough to do that at Melbourne.

    Dont take that for granted

  5. I can honestly say i had no idea just how good terlich and matt jones would be right away, both are certain starters in our best 22!

I think it shows the power of mature aged recruits!

He does it every time his contract is up for renewal, I'll believe it when he puts 2-3 good years together.

He has actually put a good 3/4 of a year together now and is playing good footy. I believe he is going to hit a new gear now as Grimes is out and a midfield position is going to open up. What is even more encouraging is that he is not just getting a few possessions he is kicking goals each week.

  6. The clearest thing for me from todays game is Jamar should not play again unless Gawn and Spencer are both injured.

notice i didnt include Jamar in that core group.

I'm so happy with Sylvia though, that goal today is starting to show his effort.

    He's a gun

  7. Has anyone noticed that a core group of players such as Matt Jones, Nathan Jones, Terlich, Garland, Howe, Gawnanator, Grimes, Viney,tMac and Tappy are starting to build a good core group. Oh and i forgot, especially Colin Sylvia, the guy has now put in a complete start to the year (except for the bombers game, which we all got obliterated).

This core group, plus Clark, Dawes, Toump and Hogan to come in can actually make Melbourne into something. I seriously am confident that this can become our future.

We may not be classy yet, but With Matt Jones and Nathan Jones these two ball magnets can lead us.

Note have left out Watts andTrengove as i am really confused to the way they have been going lately, quite disappointed actually

  9. i have a good idea in my opinion.

So look, i think that we all agree Melbourne has a young and very talented squad. Develop your rookies and dont chase anymore (except for the top 3 pick we are going to get) and Hogan. Develop all of our young players such as Hogan, Viney, Toump, Trenners, Tappy, still Grimesy some more, Matt Jones, Kent, Terlich, Jetta, Gawn, Spencer.. get these guys to start to lead from the front and stop making Mitch and Jonesy so lonely (apart from Grimes) in that category.

Get one star, i dont care who we trade, trade Watts i dont care. But get a star (someone on the same level as Beams), do whatever you can.

Every team needs a real focal point and i dont care what any of you say, we dont have one. Clark was supposed to be, but he has spent a huge portion of his time at Melbourne in rehab.

All we are missing is someone who can win clearances and rack up possies. You will see players like Trengove, Sylvia, Grimes and Jones flourish even more with someone like Beams in the team. We need someone to carry us so eventually it can be a team performance of carrying.

It's really clear cut, players like Hogan will never develop if they dont get good delivery, as Watts never got delivery we had to stick him in the defence and it's safe to say the guy has never put in a decent tackle to save his life.

    Go dees!

Finals in 2015 is my aim

  10. In Magner, Dawes, Strauss, Viney

    Out Davey, Bail, Pederson, Rodan

    Strauss Frawley Garland

    Grimes McDonald Terlich

    Byrnes Jones M Jones

    Watts Howe Sylvia

    Gawn Dawes Tapscott

    Jamar Trengove McKenzie

    Viney, Blease, Magner, Evans

If we are rebuilding a rebuild we need to start to play players that are part of the future not the past Rodan, Pederson and Davey thanks but we need to look forward to 2014 and play players that need to be a part of the plan or players that are young that have to show something. Give them 4-5 weeks in the team, tell them this and if they can't show something bring in the next batch Kent, Fitzpatrick, Toumpas, Davis, MacDonald, Dunn, Couch, Taggart, Tynon, Bail and again give the 4-5 weeks and hopefully we can find a team that really gives us some sort of hope from 2014.

what a joke, how could you drop Bail.

He puts serious forward pressure and hits his tackles with intent.

Rewatch Melbourne and watch the way Bail tackles. He's a gun

  11. Stick Blease on Yarran, make the kid accountable.

I dont care if he learns a lesson, he needs to learn how to become a player.

    Out: Pederson, Rodan

    IN: Viney, Dunn

Give Toump one more week in the VFL.

Anyone saying that Sellar should be brought in needs to get real. He's a serious spud.

Next week in comes Toump and Dawes..

  12. Lets hope so

    Magnificent stuff

He has had 4+ years - how much does he need???? Shows very little interest in the game at the moment

OK, you make a fair point. But with the step up of Trengove, Grimes and Jones it would be more likely of him stepping up.
