MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 10
Could not agree more. Visit Adelaide a lot for business. Crows supporters are "special." The closest we come to them in Victoria is probably the modern Hawthorn supporter. They really expect to win the flag most years. Port supporters may be rabid but at least they are philosophical (think Collingwood). Have not spent much time in Perth but I wonder if Eagles supporters are similar to those who support the Crows. Go Dees !!

Tom McDonald Contract Talks
The last big forward to sign was Joe Daniher in mid 2017. It was widely reported that the contract was $2M for three years. Equally it was acknowledged that Daniher had accepted significantly less than he could get on the open market. Daniher at the time was flying so to speak ... much the same as Tom Mac. On the flip side you have the ridiculous figure offered by the Dogs for the relatively untried forward in Tom Boyd of a reported $1M a year not to mention the figure of $1.4M that is being spoken of for Brisbane Tom Lynch.. Whatever we pay Tom Mac will also set an internal benchmark. One hopes that like Essendon we get a loyalty bonus similar to what they got from Daniher but frankly Tom Mac owes us nothing. As others have pointed out this is his "payday" contract and it is not as though he is 21/22 and can expect a few more bites at the ever appetising cherry.

Roos: Dees Pair the Next Big Things
Jonathan Brown in that article on Tom Mac Donald: βIβd be surprised if someone offered him more than a million dollars,β Brown said of the soon-to-be restricted free agent. Certainly hope he's right !! Little wonder the contract renewal is taking a while if those figures are being talked about.

Distance Runners and Speedsters
burst speed (the first ten metres) was extremely important but with the press and congestion I suspect it is now more about maneuverability and agility.

Changes vs Adelaide
Has there been any more updates on Weideman's injury .. thigh or calf muscle strain if I recall was the original report. Thanks

Trac's Goal Assist
I think it was last year I noticed a lot more use of the tap by the MFC. It suits our present game plan but it also needs the recipient to be moving at the time of receipt if it is to work best. Many might feel that the worst disposal is the handball back into traffic to the flat footed team mate . If you think about it ..it's not always a bad move in that the kick to advantage is not presumably available and if the holder keeps the ball he will give away a free kick for holding the ball. By handballing to the static team mate who is immediately claimed the result is a ball up. The play which does not work as well anymore is the high looping handball. GWS at their best are experts at this but equally other clubs know they will do this and accordingly they do not over commit to the ball carrier and wait to attack the recipient and hopefully cause the turnover. I thought we were very good at causing the turnovers against Carlton even though we had a few turnovers ourselves.

Tom McDonald Contract Talks
And that's the point. The long term salary projections for Tom Mac have been thrown up in the air by his movement from a "reasonable backman" to a top 5/10 forward in the space of one season. Not impossible but it's not as though there is a bottomless pot of money to deal with contingencies. Everything comes at a cost.

Changes vs Adelaide
Interesting... I think there are a few clubs that play the loyalty v the dollars thread very hard and included in those are Adelaide and West Coast. Hawthorn used to be masters at it but after they dumped the leaders at the end of 2016 I suspect they are very much back with the pack.

Love the nickname mono

Andrew Gaff
I think this the key... the players mentioned will probably command together at least $300k per year more than we would have budgeted at the end of 2017. That $300k plus whatever say Tyson is being paid at present is probably what we have set aside for Gaff. So .. how do you find the money... pay cuts, future loading the youngsters, asking one of the well paid senior players to take a longer term view (coaching) and then there is the least attractive ... trading a good player for a draft pick and salary cap relief. Very hard decisions needed.

Jordan De Goey
yeaa!! let's get it to the magic million You do realise the other clubs play games to up the price of the retaining club

Tom McDonald Contract Talks
I think that's our problem.. he's worth a lot more than he was last month and a very lot more than he was worth at the start of the 2017 season. Finding the extra dollars has to come at some cost as the money men will have had their expected salary bands well and truly locked in years ahead. Nice problem to have and is one the successful clubs face regularly.

Changes vs Adelaide
last year I think it was played around 4pm but it was played on Saturday. The previous week we had played North at the MCG on a Sunday so we only had a six day break. This year the six day break follows the game.

Tom McDonald Contract Talks
Apparently Tom Boyd's salary in his first year at the Bulldogs was limited due to AFL rules governing what can be paid to second year players. The result was that they are now paying serious money for a player that is about at the same level as the Weid. What a recipe for an unhappy list. Chook.. what about Tom Lynch... they say he is going to get the highest offer ever made... around $1.4M a year

Tom McDonald Contract Talks
mmmmmm salary distribution in clubs must be a very hard thing. Always seems that there is an extra percentage for a good forward over a good backman. With both Hoges and McDonald in the good forward category I hope we have enough for both not to mention the five or six others that could be touching the $500k mark if not more. Not sure our forward salary planning for Tom would have seen his relatively meteoric rise in value.

Luck or Good Prep?
Yep... with that slippery surface following the light rain it was a perfect scenario for an injury

Luck or Good Prep?
Must say during that last quarter on Sunday ... while I was enjoying the win I was dreading a late injury. Kept thinking... Take Gawn off etc

Changes vs Adelaide
Just noticed that the best players at Casey may (and I emphasise may) be listed in order of performance. If so they were as follows: Pedersen, Bugg, Hunt, Frost, White, Scott, Garlett I know people may not want to hear it but if you are picking on form .. Bugg was probably a reasonable way in front of Garlett last Saturday. Jeff had 18 disposals in a midfield that was absolutely on top including one on target snap for goal. Bugg had 22 possessions with five goals.

Alice Springs game
How does the game feature in the phsyce of the town RGR. Does it have any sense of occasion or is it just a novelty amongst the locals. For that matter is the Alice an Aussie Rules town or a rugby league town?

Port Melbourne v Casey Demons - Round 8
Port aren't a bad side ... they beat us well last year if I recall. Ex Tigers player Nahash (?) played a blinder. Very nice surrounds down at Port although having the same colours and theme song as the MFC can be a little confusing. And of course the famous Burra Burger not to mention the dim sims. Weather froecast looks okay if not a little cool so I will probably head down.

FIXTURING, HOW UNFAIR
Perhaps a Victorian club for China next year ... I vote for the Pies but seeing that it is such a high profile TV game why not send the "Friday night darlings" otherwise known as Carlton. "Gold Coast have said now that two games there is enough and they donβt want to go back to China next year. But someone will. Initially reluctant, the AFL has been persuaded about the merit of the game by the TV numbers and the scope for new advertisers and sponsors, so someone else will be dispatched to Shanghai next year. The Victorian government has said they are behind the idea of continuing games there, and would likely throw in some funding to give the idea added impetus. The federal government will not have been displeased that the game provided a thaw for frosty international relations. As a football match it was more trade mission than game. We can assume then a Victorian team will play Port Adelaide there next year. There is no end of Melbourne teams reliant on the AFL drip-feed, but presently none more so than St Kilda. Last year they received as much in their AFL distribution as clubs in the expanding markets. Logically it looks like the Saints in China next year." https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/4-points-free-scoring-dees-continue-to-excite-20180520-p4zgfy.html

Changes vs Adelaide
He's not you know but your over reaction is almost amusing. Even if you kick 1:4 .. it means you have got the ball in the scoring zone 5 times...........not bad
