WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BRAYDON PREUSS
he's now 27 and came across in 2014 ... played for them since 2015. When did he click .. played 11 games in 2016 and 9 in 2017. His career high game is .. wait for it...... against Melbourne in 2018 with 5 goals

most would say that two early first rounders would be fair for Hogan so you are valuing Neale at one first rounder. Might be a little low but worth arguing.

Out of interest would a trade of Hogan for Lachie Neale be a fair swap or would we need more?

Goldstein is 30 ... why would you leave to be second fiddle to the all Australian ruckman who is now 26. The second ruck has to be able to play as a KPP or he just fills in at Casey. Hell clubs prefer no ruckman over one who can't cut it around the ground. PS.. I see he's been passed by a younger guy at VFL level

it is certainly worth considering. The other problem is that of actual worth as against perceived worth. As one of three forwards what we are willing to pay JH may be a factor less than what a one forward club such as Freo might pay. Not much use if we assess him at 4x $1M and Freo offer 6 x $1.3M. Then we only have the we might win a flag card to play.

the alternative of course is to ask JH to re-contract now...... it's all about balance and next year the balance moves dramatically his way.

and that is a big reason why you trade this year. Other than taking the compensatory pick (around 15 assuming we finish top 4 next year) we would have to match and then trade.... assuming we could match. Even an offer of $1.2M x 6 would be a hard task for us to match I suspect.

GWS tried the numerous talls route with Lobb, Patton and Cameron plus Munford in the ruck. They were all high quality. Did it work... most would say no. Adelaide did much the same and were found wanting against Richmond but it did take them to a GF. When we started this thread the big question mark was over Weideman. That question mark is still there albeit that it has decreased significantly. Nice problem to have.

Wonderful contribution. Worth remembering that ultimately it was injury that caused his retirement and no one could permanently displace him from the senior side. Hope he continues at Casey for next year assuming team balance lends itself to his inclusion.

his peak value to himself is when he is an RFA ... his peak value as a trade (form aside) is this year. Witness the dilemna facing WCE re Gaff and whether they match the offer and then trade etc or take the compensatory pick.

I was using the term 'second round" to distinguish it from a low first round pick. For example no one would accept Weideman as a trade for the a low first round pick (top5) but a high first/ low second round is about his worth. The point I was trying to make is that free agency perversely benefits the higher ranked clubs because assuming they can match offers there is a lesser incentive for them to take the compensatory pick. Mind you I prefer this to the power club getting the high worth pick. Not sure that free agency is really doing much other than giving the players a little salary leverage. Perhaps a subject for the off season.

I'm sure the figures have to go through the AFL and they need to be assured that WC and the offeror can both fit the player within the salary cap.... this isn't bluff poker ( I hope)

not quite they would want something/ someone better than the comp they would be offered. I think the comp is at best pick 18 assuming they finish 17... so call it a very high second rounder. Other than Weideman I can't see anyone in that category that we and WC would even consider. Salem could be a possibility but hell I would hate to lose him. Never realised it till now but the free agency system does in a madly perverse way favour the top teams both coming and "going".

Interesting concept.... so we wait until Gaff nominates his club and then WC can match and then if the nominated club still wants him you trade. No thanks ....the only trade we would consider that WC would be interested in would probably be Weideman. Given that Gaff is an RFA it just doesn't make sense to trade a top 22 player and it's not as though they are queuing up at Casey. Stretch maybe. Fascinating PS: I did not realise that WC would then lose it's compensatory pick..... Which of course is not worth as much to a top club... (doubly fascinating)

Ah the experts are now where many of us were at a few weeks back. Interesting that King mentions trading Jess for pick 7...easy decision ....No. It gets harder for Freo's next 2 first rounders ..but I would want to be sure about the AFL's position on priority picks for Carlton and the Suns. Would also be influenced by what we could ontrade for given the spare salary cap. A mature club looks at these things with a hard head.

Bombers have a first round pick ... we don't. Whether it will be enough to tempt GWS is the question? Here's a good article about Carlton trading for Shiels and why. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-2018-can-carlton-and-gws-do-a-deal-for-midfielder-dylan-shiel-and-should-they/news-story/2fb2e6e538fc8f41edcbd4ab5b3e0287

He becomes a Restricted free Agent at the and of 2019. Why would he not wait until then and maximise the bidding war. It's GWS who would benefit from trading at the end of 2018. We need a separate thread on free agency as the pros and cons not to mention the permutations are starting to do my head in. I assume that although clubs are precluded from talking to players there is no restriction on clubs talking to managers. Out of interest when is the player allowed to commit in principle or otherwise.
-
Andrew Gaff
Nail on the head. Free Agency probably adds 20% to the amount a club will pay for a player as no need for a trade.
-
Andrew Gaff
Hard to see anyone around that we would not have to trade for. Big decisions to be made

I posted a few days back that the North offer is longer at seven years and is worth almost $2M more. The only way he would come to Melbourne is on the hope that he would be able to make up the difference on his next contract. Not much hope.

Sam Weideman
Last year he was almost continuously pushed under the ball and lacked leading skills. This year his ability to stand his ground has improved and he has added relief rucking to his repertoire. Definitely improvement but remember the VFL skill level has probably been on the decrease and most of the other back up AFL affiliated clubs are not necessarily full of KPD's. So yes... he's worth a go... Would he have been selected int he absence of injury to Hogan...probably no.
-
Sam Weideman
Agree ... he has not shown much more than Sam but the difference is he was payed all last year. Tom Mac playing forward has really made it difficult for Sam. Not sure how it will play out in the 2019/2020 timeframe. Perhaps his relief ruck work will help him but he has to have another few strings to his bow. PS: I see in the Trade Hogan thread mention is made of playing Sam at CHB. A possibility. The jury is still very much out on whether it has worked for Moore.
