I was thinking something similar in relating the comment somewhere in this thread about his kicking - chunk really improved his kicking in the back half of his career, something that very few players seem able to do.Â
I really respected him for that as it takes lot of work to change something so technique based, a technique honed with millions of kicks since he was a little kid.Â
I have a similar respect for Jack Viney as he too has really improved his kicking in the last 2 seasons.Â
I recall making that observation re Jones back in my Ology days.
Kicking and always something each year..it rarely got acknowledged.
He also tried to carry the whole team on his back for a few seasons there.
Tried a bit too hard sometimes I thought.
There were stories of tension with Jack Viney in the change room and he's no commentator
But still..
You have to love a footballer who surfs rather than plays golf though....hmm that might be a lead to follow up next next year.
I 'm surprised that Nathan came back on board given the Club seemingly begrudged 300 games, made sure he didn't overtake Neeta ( who they gifted a whole season to) and then the coach who couldn't find him a spot on the best 22 on G/F day.
Geez, they only had to beat the rabble that is "foot as grey" which is like beating Ivan Lendl at Wimbledon.Â
He may put a bit of ginger in the group..can't be bad thing , but not likely to put them in the finalsÂ

Read the club by club reviews of trading and some pertinent comments about different club's trading were made, However, when it came to MFC, the whole blurb was to do with the rubbish that had been going on the the last month or so. Nothing really about the fact that we have a couple of first round picks in the first 10.Â
Also started reporting on what the situation might be in 12 months time with Pickett, Petracca and Oliver. That has very little to do with our performance in this trade period, except to say that we have done very well to retain these three players for next season, added a couple of depth players to cover holes and got two excellent first round picks in a deep draft.
Â
Well one of those picks wasn't a trade it because of a lousy ladder placement.Â
Still two first rounders and a ruck who hopefully won't get a game along with failing to get any targets to come across really just shows how weak MFC 's appeal is.
This was about as good as could be expectedÂ

Certainly arnt and never really were.
Almost a destination Club for about 2 seasons until it was discovered that the sales pitch was sleight of hand marketing, no fan base .facilities or off field management.
The word got around when the two mega wage earners wanted out, draft picks left and heart and soul players remembered they families elsewhereÂ

As i suspected. We CAN be a Big Club if we empower the right people.Â
We have to start thinking Bigger and increasing the pressure inside the Club, just a tad more (not too much).ÂClose enough is not good enough……
Look at the numbers not the rankings...best of the irrelevant group.

A fair few posters quote that Goody's record stacks up against the best in the business. I don't agree but hadn't really looked at the numbers closely and his record stacks up slightly better than I thought it did. To be fair, I compared coaches records at the end of their 8th season (ignoring what came after). Goody had more flags than Mick Malthouse at that stage so ranks higher than Mick. Â
49 coaches have had 8 seasons. I ranked them on premierships, GFs, prelims, finals, and W-L records at the end of their 8th season. If tied I compared the next stat ie ranking premierships, ties were broken by GFs played etc.
Goody's ranking is:
Premierships 28 out of 49 (Only 11 had 2+ flags)
GFs 36 out of 49 (27 had 2+ GFs)
Prelims 36 out of 49 (26 had 3+ prelims)
Finals 35 out of 49 (31 had 5+ finals)
W-L 30 out of 49
One small ray of hope is Goody equalled or ranked above Bomber Thompson, Leigh Matthews, Mick Malthouse, Hardwick, Chris Scott, John Kennedy Snr, Alan Jeans, Clarko, Frank Hughes and Malcolm Blight for premierships after 8 seasons. All of those coaches went on to win more flags from their 9th year on (several won multiple times).Â
The coaches who went on to win more flags at the club they started are a smaller group (Clarko, C Scott, Hardwick, Bomber Thompson). Most of the others changed clubs and had a new list when they had the majority of their success.
This won't end debate on how good a coach Goody is, with some still ranking him up their with Norm Smith and others ranking him with Bill Stephen (didn't make finals in his first 8 seasons at Fitzroy). It is a reasonable dataset that compares all of the coaches at the same stage of their coaching career removing that bias.
I hope we sort out our off field distractions and give Goody a good run at it next year. I feel our superstar players are 28-32 and this will be our last real shot for a while.
Â
There's aother instinctive way to analyse coaches players and teams
How much do opposition supporters hate opposition players teams and coaches ?
I suggest that no one really cares about any of those aspects of MFC.
They're considered about as bland and irrelevant as the Dogs.
Two exceptions. One Dog and one Demon ...but even they arnt " hated"

I think this thread is probably better raised following the trade period and draft.
As things currently stand, I’d be expecting a settled football department, line coaches who are across the nuances of the modern game, a head coach who has looked at, listened to and learned from our failings of 2024  and is preparing multiple game plans.
So you're saying a new head coach bringing a new team with him?

Yes but don't forget they lost Ablett and Franklin respectively which would've helped with their TPP. I'm not sure how much less a lot of those players would have taken to stay at those clubs, maybe we paid top dollar for Petracca and Oliver but it's what we had to do to tie them up long term. With the expected salary cap increases they don't look like the monster contracts they may seem on first glance.
Viney and Gawn are underpaid .Which says as much about the others as it does them , because they are on a fair whack for a basically expanded suburban sports contest that no one outside of Australia gives a toss about

We could support him as ome of the guys wearing red and blue and encourage him to do his best.Â
Players are asked to be professional, maybe us fans need to be professional too.
How do you become a "professional" fan?
I think Jack Viney is underpaid according to today's Hun..I doubt fans should be paid at his expense.
Fans pay to enjoy watching the professionals play

You are right. Petracca acted poorly and there is nothing wrong with calling him out for it. But much of it has been OTT and tbh quite undignified. The latter comment doesn't apply to you; your comments on any topic are quite fair.
Â
As an aside, I laughed at Pert's 'best culture he had seen in 40 years'. I'm sure he believed it but how would he know; his only experience was an extinct Fitzroy and Collingwood. Hardly best practice yardsticks.
Â
My mail is that Collingwood were pleased to see him go.

As inevitable as the banjo solo in the Swans' theme song is the kneejerk reaction from a number of posters whenever Jordon does anything.
Equally predictable are the cries of "Why did we let him go", although it's been explained 1, 529,677 times that we wanted him to stay and offered him a new contract but that he chose to exercise his Free Agency rights and leave.
Cracking final, by the way! I was hoping for a GWS win but it was an outstanding match.
Well given what has transpired at MFC it's fairly clear why he left

He doesn’t hate the job thoughÂ
The people who work there - who knows I’m sure there are some that are frustrating but I’d be shocked if he could walk into another AFL club and not find DHs and huge egos it goes with the territoryÂ
I’m happy to take his grievances on face value that some things needed to change (we all agree on that) - if they do I can’t see why he wouldn’t be happy to see out what is a very lucrative contractÂ
If he still sees the grass greener somewhere else in a year or two I’m resigned to the fact he may PO but I want us to work that trade to our best advantage and preferably not to Collingwood or CarltonÂ
Maybe a trade..Trac to Cats, Scott to Dee's,Â
