Fair point ... possibly. But my memory is that he was on song until that QB 2010 game and then faded. It would be interesting to know how many of those votes he polled prior to that match. There's this from his wikipedia entry ... "Davey's 2010 season was not as successful as the year before and, although he remained one of Melbourne's better players and their main playmaker, he was not as damaging as the previous season". I've got problems with the two highlighted points you made. He's had closer to two bad seasons and I think the leader tag is applied a tad too liberally in his case. He'll be a leader - whether for the brothers or anyone else - when he starts playing hard, solid contested footy.

Not sure about highly overrated but I do agree that the fawning over Gawn by many posters is way over the top at this stage. Has attributes and obvious size advantage but still has a long way to go. Needs another 40 - 50 games (mostly at Casey) to really learn his trade.

Really caught the eye with the effort and ability he showed in the QB clash. I think it's always the mark of a good young player when they can stand up in matches when you're getting thrashed. Looks like he believes he belongs at the level and, to my mind, has the best all-round natural game out of all of the mid-sized forwards we have (including Petterd and Jurrah).

His Dad's passing earns him some leeway on compassionate grounds for what happened in 2011. These matters have to be taken into consideration at a quality football club. But I'd make it last chance saloon for Aussie in 2012.

Hasn't played a decent game since QB 2010. There are form slumps and then there's Ian Baker-Finch. He's not quite at that point but has a massive challenge to pull himself back from the brink.

I think if we're being honest, there has always been an undercurrent of resentment at the money he was being paid. Not because we begrudge our 'best players' top money but because for that kind of coin we needed a star. And through no fault of his own, for a good five or six year period, he was was never better than just a good footballer and we were never better than just an okay side. Cameron hits a nerve with us because he is the poster boy for our lack of finals success over a ten year period. His defection to Hawthorn just rubbed salt into the wounds. It was a poor decision in hindsight but shouldn't detract from the fact that 200+ games at Melbourne as a late draft pick was a very good effort.
