  1. The reason that Flanagan is so good is that he's a writer, rather than just a journalist / reporter. He has the time to really research and understand his subject matter, rather than just churn out 300 words on deadline. As has been mentioned on another thread somewhere, Brent Crosswell used to write some really good pieces for the Age back in the 80's. I'm pretty sure Supermercado even dug a few out on microfilm which he posted on here.. Patrick Smith sometimes turns out some good copy, although he does polarise those who read him and you tend to either love or loathe him. Garrie Hutchinson was probably up there with the best of them too - there are published collections of his footy stories - although, like Flanagan, he was a writer rather than a reporter.
  2. Good pickup DR. The funny thing is, it crossed my mind as I was writing it not to mix them up, but alas...
  3. paul prymke used to remind me of a young giraffe, all gangly and awkward in the legs.. but he developed into a pretty solid defender i'm glad someone mentioned paul hopgood, he could always be counted upon to cough it up
  4. i agree watts will be in the best 22 but i think you're asking a lot of him to play both wing and forward pocket at the same time mono
  5. The offer's been extended until 31 December - I got a neat little FOXTEL promo card in the mail today in the shape of a Melbourne jumper with my name on the back and a big number 5. I gotta say, I'm pretty tempted, not so much for Melbourne games (upgraded to 17-game membership next year), but for the uninterrupted coverage of the other 8 matches.. The downside is that I know I'll just end up watching a bunch of other garbage on it that I can really live without.
  6. greg champion also had a great version of that song "timmy watson to michael long..." etc
  7. he'd be better off closing his mouth and letting his football do the talking out on the field well, that's my 0.02c anyway
  8. and most of them belonged to alan ezard, who was poleaxed into the turf by a bonecrunching todd viney tackle during the last quarter good times and i agree with you about robbo's commentary WYL... used to really enjoy his calls
  9. courtesy of the good folk at demon wiki http://demonwiki.org/image2455
  10. And we can practice for those Fri night games this year by playing under lights in the last quarters of those 3.15pm games...
  11. Got a tough six-game streak between rounds 5-11 - not unlike what we faced this year - witrh games against the Saints, the Cats, Hawks, Swans, Blues, Dons and Pies... Other than that I reckon we're OK Looking forward to the years ahead when we can snare a few more Friday night games
  12. hehe there's some great material on that white maggott website, i like this one too "In a public relations coup for the largely irrelevant organisation, the North Melbourne Football Club was named Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisation at the annual SHUNPROFIT awards overnight. The Kangaroos beat home The Smith Family, MS Australia, World Vision and a raft of community-based West African NGO’s to take out the coveted prize. Club president James Brayshaw said the award recognised North Melbourne’s steadfast commitment to maintaining a steadily increasing and unsustainable defecit for the past thirty years. “No other club could’ve operated under these conditions” Brayshaw said as stared at the black hole which doubles as the club’s balance sheet. “And I’m not speaking out of pride… we haven’t been a going concern since 1997… legally, no other club could’ve operated under these conditions… we’ve just somehow slipped through the cracks.” Brayshaw, who earlier this year was investigated by ASIC after he attempted to treat the “shinboner spirit” as an intangible asset for the purposes of the club’s financial reports, then took the opporunity to launch the Kangaroos’ innovative 2012 funding campaign. “I’m proud to announce that from 2012 the North Melbourne Football Club will be treated as a charity for the purposes of the Income Tax Assessment Act” Brayshaw said. “It’s only fair given we’ve fed, clothed and sheltered Nathan Grima and Scott Thompson all these years.”
  13. schoenmakers' dropped mark cost them the game ultimately, b/c from that stoppage ball goaled he's had a shocker of a finals series i reckon, a weak link awesome, intense game MFC has a long way to go
  14. i reckon you're right old dee - i've got my fingers crossed
  15. certainly not working on their foot skills, that's for sure..
  16. Why wait till after the game? Crackers Keenan used to smoke at 3/4 time by all accounts
  17. Was Robbie Flower's game-winning goal against Footscray in 1981 after the siren? Or just late in the game?
  18. Long before Todd briefly left the MFC to coach the 'poo, he was providing tennis tuition to young Demons supporters with stars in their eyes. I know this because I was one of them (along with Demonland's Andy) Todd advertised his services in what was then the club newspaper, and for a cool $80 an hour IIRC, you could have teenis lessons with the gun Melbourne midfielder. It was a small if extravagant price to pay to hang out with Todd.. I certainly don't remember any of the tennis tips he might have passed on, but I do remember him lecturing us about the dangers of drinking and driving, as it was not long after the death of Darren Millane. / end glory story about how I was one of the first people to be coached by Todd Viney / B)
  19. jamar has been a great asset to this club... shouldnt be too hard to bash out a few hundred words
  20. they said concussion but ok on ch.10
  21. As a fellow Demonlander said to me, he's a class above his team-mates
  22. pretty much sums it up for me redleg, especially the bit about jurrah i was so excited pre-season in anticipation of the dazzling feats he was going to perform but the x-factor has been missing from his game this year and while he might be grabbing a couple of goals a match, he's really failed to impose himself on games - 2nd quarter effort against Port notwithstanding
  23. Just ordered my copy through the club, looking forward to this
  24. great read from flanagan that quote about david kantilla - that his genius was that he could cope - is telling i think
  25. Fearless player with unquestionable courage, was a highly-rated defender during an era that boasted three of the game's greatest all-time forwards in Lockett, Dunstall and Ablett. Condolences to Sean's family and the entire MFC community.
