sorry WYL - why would 10,000 + non-MFC footy supporters bother with this game ? -
I like the banter here but I reckon it does the board a disservice because Redleg's observations - often thought-provoking - end up here rather than in the relevant thread. My 0.2 cents

A few random standouts for me: * Darren Bennett kicking a bag at Windy Hill one day as we came back from 34 points down midway through the final quarter to roll them by 8 points * Garry's game-winning goal against WCE in the 88 Elimination Final * Garry's massive torp two weeks later against the Blues in the Prelim. Well inside the centre square at Waverley, a ground considerably longer than the 'G * Schwarz's hat-trick of magic in late '94, starting with 9.0 against the Swans at the SCG, followed up by the blind turn out of the ruck against the Blues in the first final, and then his swashbuckling game against the Dogs a week later, an effort bested only by Garry's 10-goal haul the same day. * Jakovich's bag of 8 against the Dons in the Elimination Final out at Waverley * For some reason I still remember Brent Heaver's (!) five-goal haul on debut against the Blues (pretty sure it was a public holiday...)

without getting into a debate on media standards (and yes I do think they are on the slippery slope) i wasn't really comparing talkback radio to print journalism. they are different beasts. i do think it's valid, however, to use talkback radio as a measure of public opinion, and the same would go for this forum.. it's not unreasonable to say - and not uncommon to see - sentences such as "talkback callers flooded the airwaves to call for coach x' sacking or rule y to be changed".. that doesn't make it an accurate reflection of community sentiment, just a selection of the views that are out there

whether he's a genuine what? poster? what's the alternative? that he's an automated bot that produces opinions on cale morton ? no it's not. in the context, the poster's identity is irrelevant to the story. the only qualification is that the poster be a melbourne supporter with an opinion. it makes no difference whether robbie57 is a 14-y.o girl or a 73 y.o grandfather if - for example - the forum was comprised only of former melbourne players, then you'd have an argument for unmasking the poster's identity. if the journo wrote "a former player has demanded mark neeld be sacked" the public would rightly be curious whether it was a recent player, or a premiership champion, or someone who's always been embittered etc etc. but in thist context it doesn't matter diddly squat whether robbie 57 is arthur or martha, they're a melbourne supporter with an opinion really don't know why you're making such a song and dance about attribution and identity. if talkback is flooded with callers baying for neeld's blood does it really matter whether its kevin from sunshine who's on the phone or ivan from ivanhoe?

http://thedailymaggot.com/?p=2177 looks like the daily maggot agrees with your "laughable" description Redleg

i think it was a nod to the queen's diamond jubilee more than anything.. god knows why but i doubt we'll see it again

i saw the same one HB

Also what was the business with the 1st quarter collingwood goal / hit the post ? did it actually go to review or was it knocked back because a goal had already been given?
-
Forget about winning 50/50 umpiring decisions.. we need to start kicking the 70/30 shots on goal - Green in the first quarter was criminal and whoever it was in the third from 25m out directly in front (Garland?)
-
Yeh I was pretty surprised that he used such strong language so early in the season It may have been warranted had we gone through the entire year playing as we did against Sydney, but it was jumping the gun at 0-8 Funny how last year when we defeated Essendon, Bailey and the team were criticised for their jubilation and celebrations at the siren, yet this year Neeld and co were feted for the same
-
for what it's worth Redleg, Don McLardy was on 3AW last week and he absolutely ripped into Sheahan over those comments - really genuinely angry. Sheahan has also mentioned several times how McLardy rang him first thing in the morning when the article came out and tore him a new one privately. I'm glad he got the chance to do it publicly too, although Mike was wearing it as a badge of honour of course

Nine touches apiece for our two skippers in the final quarter, really stood up when it counted
-
funnily enough bobby tonight was the first time in a long time where i had confidence we would keep the lead.. we just seemed to be controlling the stoppages and dictating ball movement, or the stifling thereof.. was still bloody relieved - and ecstatic - when the siren went what a win! best since swannies in late 2010 by a country mile
-
yep the impressive thing tonight was they neither dropped neither their heads nor their workrate when they fell behind in the 3rd quarter
-
6. Jones 5. Rivers 4. Garland 3. Nicholson 2. Watts 1. Grimes
-
haven't enjoyed singing the song so much for a long long time well done boys and congrats to mark neeld on his first win may there be many more

I've also wondered how many members will stick fat next year if things continue as they are Old Dee In Round 1 against Brisbane it seemed like every single members was there and in full voice.. against Carlton on the weekend (admittedly an away game) there was hardly a Demon fan in sight and apart from the efforts of the cheer squad (and MCC) our goals were greeted in silence. I found a handful of fellow Demons to sit near in the top deck of the Northern Stand on Saturday but I looked around and couldn't see a single other Melbourne supporter in the stand.

what happens in a GF if the competing clubs supposedly have clashing jumpers ?
-
It's a fallacy that Neeld doesn't have an offensive component to his gameplan and that the boys channelled the ghost of Bailey in the first quarter yesterday. Anyone who thinks Neeld came to Melbourne with a one-dimensional outdated defensive gameplan from 2010 must think the coach a monkey.
-
He's a Melbourne supporter, I'm pretty sure he wrote this when he closed the site down for a few days when Jimmy passed away
-
No argument from me there Ralphius - I was happy with Bail and Nicho yesterday and reckon they'll come along just fine. And I'm not unhappy with Grimes - just frustrated because it was also evident in the games he played before getting injured last year. Hopefully he'll find better touch as he gets more games under his belt.
-
To everyone feting Grimes but lambasting Bail and Nicho for their ball use, Grimes butchered the ball as much as Bail (24 disposals at 58 per cent efficiency) and less so than Nicho (22 disposals at 68 per cent efficiency)
