Until last night I always thought Gary Snr was the more freakish player, while his son the more well-rounded, but some of last night's magic reminded me very much of his father. Beautiful to watch.

If you're wheeling out Peter Landy I can only presume we can use Jack Dyer ? 'He made a great debut last week and an even better one today.'

The tragic downfall of Liam Jurrah
Grapeviney replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
I don't recall that but wouldn't he have been referring to Jurrah's celebrity status in his family / community ? This was certainly raised by his defence - the tactic of targeting the tall poppy in the community. The point I'm making is that Jurrah didn't create - and certainly couldn't stop - the hype about him.. he was a star on the rise, and the story was a fairytale that was always going to accompany his career. -

The tragic downfall of Liam Jurrah

Celebrity exposure? FCS, it's not like the guy went on a book-signing publicity tour through shopping malls. I'd be surprised if the book sold more than a couple of hundred copies, so the notion that it somehow threw him off course is absurd. The reason for the excitement around LJ was not a result of the book, it was built on the sublime skills which we saw in the all-too-brief time that his star shined at Melbourne. That's what captivated the football world about Jurrah, and that's why guys like Flanagan - who probably wrote more words on LJ than BHM did - were naturally drawn to his story. This notion that hype somehow caused his downfall is just nonsense in my opinion. -
Hope you have a great day out hardtack, and get to the sing the song at game's end.

The tragic downfall of Liam Jurrah

You really blame all this on Bruce and that bloody book, don't you? I suggest you dig up some of the older threads on Jurrah's initial arrest and read some of the posts from our NT forum members which shed light on his family's long-standing feud. -
Not exactly the best way to convince supporters to fork out for a membership.

Like others in this thread, I still wear my signed #5 guernsey to the footy. The three next-to-last games he played before knee injury number 1 - kicking 9.0 at the SCG, and then the two swashbuckling finals - are three of my all-time favourite MFC memories, and I still regularly watch the Nureyev passage of play. I love it how you can hear the crowd gasp at the pirouette, and then the sound comes to a crescendo as the pin-point pass makes it's way towards Garry's chest. How I long to experience that kind of joy at the footy again.. to see some real magic in September!

'Raising The Bar' ... 9 MFC players who must lift in 2013.

Are you sure these are characters from a film and not some of BP's better-known recruits.. -

I'd add the other Captain Jack to the list. -
In the print edition Mitch Clark is listed among a small group of players "not considered due to injury".
-
The running he does do is well wide of the pack and the footy.. you tend to see his head bobbing up and down at the bottom of the TV screen, just out of the play, but that's about it.

I doubt very much that the ad was free or even discounted as part of the sponsorship arrangement between club and newspaper. And I suspect the sponsorship doesn't have anything to do with Herald Sun signage at the 'G either - there's plenty of that already.

"I don't know what the definition of tanking is".. pretty much sums it up

Round 2 - 3 of our NAB Cup games not televised

bwahahahaaa There are more GWS supporters than there are people hooked up to that thing... -
Does the 'Hun give a page to a leftie to respond to Bolt? Does the Age have a conservative economic commentator to counter Davidson, Colebatch and co?
-
Most opinion pieces are disputed by someone - that's why they're published, they generate debate. It's a dull paper that only publishes opinion pieces on which everyone agrees. Perhaps you've been reading Pravda all your life.
-
Ninety per cent of what you read in the paper is denied by the protagonists. In a news article, those denials usually come at the end of the story, the last two paragraphs. Caro's article was an opinion piece, not a news story - there's no obligation to acknowledge the other side in an opinion piece. Imagine an economics commentator having a crack at Wayne Swan. The following day, Swan puts out a press release answering point by point the criticisms levelled at him. Could you ever imagine a second opinion piece that covers Swan's responses?
-
It wasn't presented as fact at all - it was an opinion, or an educated guess. In fact it's so obvious it doesn't even require the education bit.. And I didn't say I'd bet my bottom dollar - I said you can almost .. Neither did I say anything about Schwab. Perhaps you have more in common with Caro than I.
-
ummm... It says the two aren't mutually exclusive ... I don't get your point.
-
Why people think the two are mutually exclusive is a mystery to me ...
