Offering them a one year contract isn't saying they are past it. It is saying we think you have something to offer, hence why we are offering you a contract. Players can go downhill very quickly after 30, especially the way the game is going now. Its good business, not really ruthless. We were ruthless in Bruce in not caving in to his demands, but we offered him a contract.

He is also only 22, so he has plenty of time to build up a body like a Pavlich type. I don't think we will get him because I think Carlton will be all over him. I dont know anything about his attitude like I have said previously so I wont comment on that, but as a player it is one to consider.

Looking at recent drafts there has been some good late gets. 2001 had Brian Lake at 71 and Dane Swan at 58. 2002 Brad Sewell was a rookie selection, so was Porplyzia.

If it is alright for Shane Crawford to play out his career on one year contracts after turning 30, a brownlow medalist, elite champion player, then it should be fine for good old Brucey boy. Its common practice. The player should take it as an incentive. Obviously doesn't back his ability to make it impossible for the club to turn him down after next season.

What I like about those photos is that Scully, Trengove and even Bail are leading the packs. Also Maric is always up near the front in the photos (I know, they are only photos) but it looks like he is working hard to earn his spot. Even having Sylvia there up and going is great to see.

You reckon that the press conference is the first contact the player has with the club regarding their future? Seriously? By having a press conference it allows the fans etc to have some form of a goodbye. It lets the player have their say. If you haven't noticed, football media is big business now. If we didnt hold a press conference, the player would be put through interviews anyway. So whats the difference?

The policy is great, and is regular practice now in almost every AFL club. Offering longer than 1 year contracts for players over 30 is dangerous. Look at Brad Johnson. Well it certainly wasn't successful. My definition of success is a flag. We made up the numbers for years, we were what the Western Bulldogs are now. That isn't success.

What is it that you think McKenzie lacks in comparison to Jnr? I think his physical attributes are spot on for a shut down role, but I wouldnt want to use him in one because it would remove his bottom of the pack clearance ability.
