And if they can keep this up, they'll start to get some Geelong-like silverware. Impressive. Interesting also how a few "hot" players lift everyone else and set a kind of standard that everyone else just follows. We just don't have those players, at least not around the stoppages.

Putting other considerations/comments to one side, he hasn't had much of a run with injuries etc. of later. Similar thing happened 3 weeks ago (head knock) then last week was apparently sick or post-flu or whatever.

WADA weren't involved in the Armstrong case. USADA.

Not holding my breath, but at least we had one decent quarter.

From reading the Casey thread etc., would be surprised if Salem gets a call up this week. Has missed a lot of footy. White probably not ready, not sure what's going on with Toumpas, maybe the knock he had the previous week has set him back a bit because the first half review on him from that week was excellent. Which probably only leaves Fitzy - who played a stellar half of VFL footy then disappeared. Which is interesting, especially for those who say we haven't improved: we're not considering Bail, M Jones, Terlich or McKenzie, who not that long ago were automatic starters.

Some serious questions asked about Paul Roos ...

There's a limit to what a coach can do if the players aren't up to it. -

Forget the Hawks coaching panel ... who'd like a few of the Hawks leading players? Yes please. -

Absolutely nails it. Apparently, 53 turnovers through the midfield. Staggering figure. Tyson, Cross and Jetta all had 20+ disposals, with a third of those not reaching their intended targets. With players over 10 disposals, we had 6 at higher than 80% efficiency, St Kilda had 9, including Roberton - 100% efficiency for his 23 disposals. Nothing to do with Roos, everything to do with consistently being able to execute the basics on the day. (Also, quite a bit to do with Demonlanders having an over-inflated impression of the talents and capabilities of our players.) -
Of course we were interested in him, we were interested in anyone. But he was never told we'd be picking him, and that goes for the others on that list as well.

One dimensional view, one dimensional response. -

Agree 100% with Django. Nothing (little) to do with Roos. Skills, turnovers, skills, turnovers. The story of our season. I could only watch today's match in dribs and drabs, but every time I turned to it, there was someone fluffing a handpass or a kick, or making a poor decision. We're also just too undermanned - missing players like Frost, Kent, Salem, without starting on Petracca/Trengove. Finally, we're getting into the business end of the season, and for first year players like Brayshaw, Vandenberg etc., who gave us so much earlier on, it's getting to be a looming season as well. -
Criticising is one thing. Rubbishing (and insulting) players (and other posters) is another.

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 16
bing181 replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Feel that one of the messages from the "no change" is that they not only need to play, but they need to play TOGETHER. Dawes, Howe and Hogan have played how many matches together ... 3 or 4? Constant changes don't help, we/they need consistency. Not unhappy, don't see how anyone at Casey would make a difference. They've all had their chances and been found wanting. Play this lot until the injured players start coming back in, then perhaps look at giving Hunt or even O Mac a run towards the end of the season. -
Because it's patently obvious that it's untrue. One frustrating loss and half of you drop your bundle. Pathetic.
-
I cannot believe some of the posts in this thread. I just don't know how some of you manage to make it through the day.
-
Or even some parts of his game. If the instructions for today were "work on your tackling", then no point castigating him for "not being in the bests" if other aspects of his game take a back seat. Sometimes it seems that we want players to go back to Casey to work on their weaknesses, but when they do ...
-
... on a regular basis.
-
Actually, we won the clearances. Just like we won pretty well every stat (3 less tackles, but that's about it).
-
And who may they be, prey tell? Bail? McKenzie? Matt Jones? You've hit the nail on the head though - we just do not have nearly enough experienced, consistent players. I'd bring Grimes in, he's at least experienced, and then, if he has another decent game at Casey, Fitzpatrick. Hard to see any other changes doing more than just shuffling the deck chairs until the likes of Salem and Kent can return.

Thought the match was pretty depressing, but was nothing compared to reading a few pages of this thread. Plenty here are just kidding themselves. While we're counting on a bunch of under 21 year olds, some of whom have only a handful of games, performances are always going to be all over the shop. You look at some of the players who we're having to count: Viney, 40 games, Tyson 45, Gawn 31, without even starting on Brayshaw, Hogan etc. Maybe when there's a 1 before all those numbers we'll be able to start going into melt-down for losing "must-win" matches, but until then ... It takes years, there's no way around it. It takes years to get the personnel in place, but then it takes more years for them to learn to play as a team. Just the way it is.
-
Love Viney's intensity, but he's got to be more effective (= damaging). 11 disposals at 45% efficiency, including 4 clangers, plus 3 frees against doesn't actually put all that much on the "plus" side of the ledger. ANB, Stretch due for a run at Casey I'd think, and Brayshaw could perhaps been rested. Don't agree with the doom and gloom around here, though understand - as losses goes, that was about as deflating as it gets. But even if we'd managed to scrape home for the win, don't know that I for one would have been feeling much better. Still a long way to go, just hope that they're learning from these defeats that should have been wins.

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 15

Harmes in. Starting to see the benefit of solid drafting and equally solid development. JKH as sub for mine. He brings that explosion of energy that you want a sub to bring. But what the heck, happy with the changes.
