  1. The Age journo Emma Quayle, who spends a great deal of her time writing about the draft and young players, tweeted this about Matthew on Watts:

emmasq What the hell is Leigh Matthews' problem with Jack Watts? He had a go last year too. Ridiculous.

I remember thinking last year that the Brisbane Lions had started a concerted (but completely unnecessary) campaign for Daniel Rich to win the Rising Star and at about the same time Matthews put down Jack repeatedly. Coincidence?

Either way, Matthews seems confident that he can judge a players weaknesses, current ability and entire career based on 5 minutes - or even one piece - of play. Jamie Bennell can look forward to a career of 'lacking awareness' and Jack will forever be 'more of a flanker'.

As long as they lack awareness and are more of a flanker in a couple of premierships, I can live with Matthews senile 'expert' commentary.

  2. This is for everyone's personal reflections of the day... including all the non-footy things that are part of the fabric of what is a pretty special day.

Nope, today we're watching our future. And heartbreak is back there in the past. It's a day for dreams...

Thanks for the kiss of death :(

  3. are we hurting for lack of forward line?

Without doubt. Petterd and Jurrah are being missed. Even with both of them in we are still lacking a physically mature marking target (not Miller).

I'm more concerned with the form of Green, Sylvia and Davey. Need a turnaround soon.

  4. Why? 30 touches suggests that while he may not be delivering it well, at least he's getting his hands on it.

And up until this week he's been sensational for us this year. Great pickup.

Won't be dropped for next week. If it's been a bad game, it'd be his first.

Maybe dropping is a harsh call. Indecisive and conservative, caught often with the ball and put others into trouble. Coughed up goals. Needs to be better.

  5. Petterd didn't look great walking off. Shoulder was out and took a big knock to the jaw in the marking contest.

Our small (but lightweight) forward line suited North's quick and stocky backline.

North's paddock type forward line exposed Warnock for height and Bruce and Rivers for pace. Was a constant concern.
