  1. My reading of that AFL article is simply that McAdam won't be joining main training. Yes, the article does say he "will complete a training block away from the main group" but the article also later says "The South Australian has spent most of the pre-season training away from the main group." Is it any different from the usual rehab? Most likely he will be in the gym/pool/physio until the nerve issue has settled and he can start running again.
  2. LH can probably confirm, but I think if we want to guarantee that we can get Brown in (ie. that we can match a bid during the draft) then we will have to delist and promise to rookie two players - Melksham and maybe Schache. That would give us 3 spots available for the draft (6, 11 and Brown).
  3. AFL Draft Order page says it was our natural F2. We've kept the F2 linked to Sydney.
  4. Acquiring assets to facilitate a fair trade isn't really Peter Bell's MO, but the two big WA names that come to mind are Logan McDonald and Tim English.
  5. WC: ..... Darling? Would you be tempted by 10, Adelaide F1 and McAdam for Petty. Then 6, 10, 11 to WC for Reid and Darling. Deathride 2.0
  6. Wouldn't be surprised if there is a tail end to the 11 for 14 trade where the Dees receive a favourable pick swap later in the trade period for one of GC's multiple 2nd rounders.
  7. From afl.com: end of round two compensation pick - currently pick No.39
  8. I agree that the North compensation pick will affect the value of our picks. Our current pick 5 becomes Pick 6 based on the latest reporting. But Academy and Father/Son picks don't affect our value. With Pick 6 we have the 6th free choice of 'open' (non-aligned) players. If Walters and Read and Rogers all get jammed in before us, it doesn't matter - we still have the 6th free choice of a known pool of players.
  9. If the Bulldogs do beat us to Pick 4 as mooted, I think we should then target GC's newly acquired Pick 10 with our second round and later picks + most likely a future pick would be required. Would be awesome to walk into the draft with picks 5, 10, 13 + Kynan Brown.
  10. If Brodie wants to go, we should ask him to commit to 2024 with us and if he still wants to leave then we will facilitate a trade. In terms of 2023, it is too late/risky to start trialling forward setups that include Grundy for significant periods of the game, but after a full pre-season the combination could be workable. I imagine his first preseason was predominantly focused on working with the midfielders, rather than as a part of the forward line (and the Essendon game showed the Grundy-backline connection was wanting).
  11. I feel for their young supporters, but the Hawks are about to deliver a masterclass in tanking this year.
  12. Yes. The NSW and QLD clubs in particular would love it.
  13. I was stuck at home today, so I tried to find a way for Melbourne to get value for Jackson (if he doesn't re-sign with us). I tried to channel our list managers focus on overall outcomes and came up with this 6-club megadeal which actually kinda makes sense. Things we know or are strongly rumoured about this draft are: 1. Brisbane need points for Ashcroft & Jaspa Fletcher. 2. Western Bulldogs and Lobb are interested in each other. 3. Rankine wants to go back to SA. Preconditions for this megadeal to work: 1. West Coast need to be willing to split their #2 pick (makes sense to bring in a crop of WA youngsters) 2. Gold Coast need to be willing to trade up from #5 (acquired via Rankine) and #7 to #2 (this could be the opportunity cost required to have a shot at Cadman) Anyway, in the end the Dees would end up with Pick 5, Pick 20, Freo's 2023 1st round, Gold Coasts 2023 2nd round and Meek or Treacy. We would be giving up Jackson and our 2023 1st round (hopefully #18). The full ins and outs are below. Is it a Win-Win-Win-Win-Win-Win deal?
  14. Not sure how to buy from the club, but you can also find here: https://www.aflfootyshop.com.au/melbourne-demons-mens-90s-throwback-training-jacke
  15. I think there are two elements of the EBA that we would actually need to wait for final figures - the final cap figure determines how much we can front load, and also the player marketing allowances. Both elements could be involved in the Jackson/Brayshaw contracts.
  16. Isn't Kobi George from Victoria? Melbourne welcomes NGA talent
  17. It's a stretch to call that an 'article'. A blogger who saw the same 6 seconds of Channel 7 as we have. Not putting a lot of cred in someone who writes "The Jesse Hogan trade was the dam wall for this trade period, with picks exchanged in that trade being used for Brisbane’s pursuit of Lachie Neale and Melbourne’s Steven May chase"
  18. I don't mind the concept of injury replacements, but why this element: Clubs have first rights to re-contract their drafted player or he becomes a delisted free agent. It doesn't fit the 'injury replacement' premise of the rule and could open the system to abuse. Better model would be that the drafted player returns to their original status - a VFL/SANFL/WAFL/NEAFL player who can nominate for the next National drafts as usual. The AFL club had the benefit of a healthy body. The drafted player received AFL exposure and will likely be picked up in the National Draft at an appropriate draft pick 'cost'. But I guess you don't want lower clubs auditioning players for Top 8 clubs to pick off with late 1st or 2nd round picks based on exposed form. So in true AFL fashion I'm going to complicate it by saying the rule should be: Clubs finishing in the bottom 6 have first rights to re-contract their drafted player or he returns to his pre-midseason draft status. Also, you would think this means the end to carrying any mature backup ruckmen on your list. Draft them young, if not first 22 by age 24, delist and use mid-season draft if major injury.
  19. As a fellow introvert, I reckon Jesse would hate a process where he publicly commits to Freo and then Freo drag out negotiations for the whole week. I reckon a deal is virtually done. Wait a day or two into the trade period to look like your negotiating and then make it official.
  20. These days I think 'touring the facilities' is code for getting the medical check done.
  21. Forgetting for a moment all the trade and FA compensation minutiae of how these circumstances arise, if you were the football manager for these clubs would you pull the trigger on these deals? Geelong viewpoint - Would you trade Tim Kelly and Pick 11 for Pick 7 and Pick 15? Carlton or Adelaide viewpoint - Would you trade Pick 1 for Pick 4 and McGovern? Port Adelaide viewpoint - Would you trade Pick 9 and Pick 10 for Pick 5 and Fremantle’s 2019 2nd rounder? Melbourne viewpoint - Would you trade Hogan for May and Pick 10? GWS viewpoint - Would you trade Lobb for Pick 11? GWS or Carlton viewpoint - Would you trade Pick 4 and 2019 1st rounder for Shiel? Gold Coast viewpoint - Would you accept Pick 9 for May?
  22. This is the payoff for the 'fair and reasonable' trading strategy seen with the recruitment of Lever. The high ground to say to the player and his manager: "We respect your talent and value and have shown than when we target someone we get the deal done." "If Freo won't respect your value, you''ll be here for 2019 and if Freo don't come to the party at the end of 2019, you'll have to go to the draft."
  23. Not sure if this has been posted already, but this Voss thread seems appropriate. Has Voss been asked by the AFL to clarify his comment - "our critical decision in 2010 was to try and lower our draft picks and get some good quality talent in" - from this recent article? Sounds like something the Lions should be fined a half mil for.
