Christian Petraccaâs 2024 Season Ending Injuries
Dr Peter Brukner, a professor of sports medicine at La Trobe University who has been a club doctor for Collingwood and Melbourne, defended the Demonsâ decision to allow Petracca to return to the field after his initial assessment. âInitially these things may not seem too bad because you often get bruised ribs -- thatâs something some people can play with,â Brukner said. âHe [Petracca] would be pushing: âLet me see how I goâ sort of thing. As I said, sometimes it takes a little bit of time for the breathing difficulties and the bleeding to manifest itself. Itâs probably not that unusual that he went back on. But I think they quickly realised he wasnât right. Then he started to complain about feeling worse, and they quickly went into action.â Brukner, who was at the game and spoke with Melbourneâs club doctors in the dressing room afterwards, said the Demons had done well to send Petracca to hospital as quickly as they had. âYou can miss these and ignore them and just say, âHe is in pain.â But I think they did very well to get him off to hospital as quickly as they did,â Brukner said. âHe would have had a tube inserted into his lung to expand the lung, and sedation and painkillers because the fractured ribs are very painful. And then they would just be observing the spleen side of things to make sure he was not continuing to bleed, which, in rare cases, they have to take the spleen out if thatâs the only way to stop the bleeding. Usually, the bleeding just settles down by itself. âYou can imagine, there is a cut on the spleen ⊠and it just stops bleeding after a while. It just depends how severe that laceration was. A horrible injury.â (The Age, 11 June)

Boundary throw ins
My perception is that the umpires changed the technique of boundary throw-ins not long ago. They sling it across their chest more angularly, rather than just straight over their head. This might be to get the ball thrown a greater distance, but I think it has lowered the depth accuracy and given more error in direction. You often see the ball going well left or right of where the ruckmen expect it to land.

And he's right about this.
Not difficult at all. They were both lured home (by Fremantle) and for family reasons. "The other guy" worked out for Fremantle, Hogan didn't and still wasn't happy. He had a navicular stress fracture and mental health issues that didn't help.

And he's right about this.
Yes. I take issue with the word "refuse" in the SEN headline. Just because we can't fix a problem doesn't mean we've refused to address it. What forward has actually realistically been available for trade or at our draft picks? For all I know, we've tried.
