  1. Definitely Daniel Hughes who was originally a Sandy player.
  2. He's now played three games with the Sandy reserves and perhaps one more should do it as I'm not really sure that he will develop much further in the Sandy reserves. He's a player of obvious quality and with all due respects to the Sandy reserves (which are severely depleted at the moment) he needs to have players of a higher standard around him for his own development and for the benefit of the team. How much more would he have learned yesterday playing with the likes of White, Davey and Yze? He played in all the quarters but went off probably around the 20 minute mark of each (please don't quote me on exact times) so he's building up to a full game. He ran well and looked quite fit. I'd say yes for Petterd but think next year for Maric who still has some more to learn at this level but will be good.
  3. The Zebras now have a battle to make the finals after their fifth defeat on the trot, four of them to teams in the top four. 4. Not when you consider the players who have been broght back into the side this week Vanlo. Someone has to make way for the likes of MFC listed players, Jeff White, Aaron Davey, Ben Holland and Jace Bode and Sandy's Nick Sautner and David Gallagher who are all inclusions from last week's team. It won't hurt younger players McNamara and Specencer to go back to the reserves because, as you can read from Andy Lovell's game summaries on melbournefc.com, the club does have certain guidelines regarding how they develop players and that process continues even if they are playing in the Sandy reserves. Incidentally, it will be well worth it for supporters to turn up to TBO to watch the game today to see players like Jeff, The Flash and Benny in action on a suburban footy ground.
  5. This is the Sandringham squad for the reserves game tomorrow:- Calder, Anthony Cannon, Jack Cleeve, Stuart Curcio, Michael Donaldson, Jayden Fleming, Andrew Gilchrist, Rennie Gilder, Brad Grimes, Jack Hardiman, Maddison Hine, Matthew Johnston, Marc Johnston, Tomi Kondarovskis, James Lockwood, Scott Lyall, Nicholas McNamara, Tom Monaghan, Sam Plymin, Jarrod Sargent, Daniel Shakaib, Hiwad Spencer, Jake Summons, Justin Teasdale, David Torcasio, Christopher Vickers, Jack Weetra, Isaac Zomer, Trent
  6. Sandringham plays ladder leader Williamstown in an important game for the Zebras on Saturday at Trevor Barker Beach Oval. 7. Andy Lovell's player review from this round is now up on melbournefc.com.au - VFL Rd 13: Player Review Promising signs from a few players notably James Frawley - "James played a really good game as a key defender. He played on North Melbourne's Corey Jones, and beat him. He defended really well, but also attacked the game. He gave us some really good run and drive off half back, and also used the ball well. He improved from last week, and this is the second week in a row that he has been good for us." Also Jack Grimes getting 21 posessions in half afootball. Last week he had 18 touches in a half. Can't wait till he's 100% fit!
  8. Despite the loss, the Zebras could have turned the corner today as they held their own with North Ballarat after a poor first quarter at a difficult venue for away teams to negotiate and against the team that knocked off competition leaders Williamstown last week. Nick Sautner and Adem Yze were both sorely missed. 11. I wasn't there for the Ressies because the Kingswood was particularly uncooperative yesterday morning. However, the reports are that Jack Grimes looked very good. He came on and off the ground due to his lack of match fitness but from all reports from some very harsh judges is that he looked a class above the other guys out there.

  13. Thanks for the report Minka. There are some very interesting observations there and I get your drift about the possibility of what you say could be "an increasingly messy divorce". I doubt however, that any of the messiness can be attached to the inclusion of Melbourne players. This has been part and parcel of the process between the clubs throughout nine mostly successful seasons. Below this post I have put the team lists for the seniors and the reserves and highlighted the MFC players in each of them. My point is that the Melbourne inclusions were all natural selections being Bell (out injured last week), Carroll (out suspended last week), Frawley (dropped from MFC), Newton and Petterd (up from the reserves after at least 2 games there) and Jeff White (dropped from MFC). I doubt anyone could say their inclusions were detrimental to the team. Out of the side from a MFC POV were Martin (to MFC), Cheney & Maric who went to the reserves. I would maintain that the latter two players (who both played poorly against Port the week before) could have been kept in the side and would have been better than some of the Sandy listed players who came up from the twos. When the combination was successful, there were usually 8 to 10 good quality Sandy players and they were augmented by 12 - 14 MFC players (12 in finals and against stand alones). This year, Sandy is trying out a lot of good young players with promise but they are not firing as well as the Sandy listed players of the past. Chad Liddell and Ezra Poyas haven't shown their form of the past and David Gallagher has been injured all year. As you can see from the list below, he made his comeback in the reserves yesterday. Sandringham Seniors 29/6/2008 Daniel Bell Andrew Biddlecombe Nathan Carroll Roderick Crowe Thomas Dean James Frawley Rennie Gilchrist Chris Lamb Chad Liddell Andrew McConnell Tom McNamara John Meesen Cale Morton Michael Newton Ricky Petterd Ezra Poyas Nicholas Sautner Peter Summers Shane Tregear Jeff White Jake Williams Adem Yze Sandringham Reserves 29/6/2008 Kyle Cheney Stuart Cleeve Michael Curcio Andrew Fleming David Gallagher Daniel Gribbin Jack Grimes Maddison Hardiman Marc Johnston Tomi Johnston James Kondarovskis Scott Lockwood Nicholas Lyall Guy Martyn Addam Maric Sam Monaghan Jarrod Plymin Daniel Sargent Hiwad Shakaib Jake Spencer Isaac Weetra

  19. Sandy loses another player for its cut throat game v Port Melbourne - "Nathan Carroll - Sandringham Guilty of Charging - 1 Match Suspension* *Denotes player opted for the prescribed automatic penalty" The Zebras are limited to 12 players against Port who are a stand alone club but might struggle to get that number of fit Demons into the side. Michael Newton and Ricky Petterd are due for a recall from the Sandy reserves who had 5 Demons in their line up at Casey. The other three were Isaac Weetra, Jake Spencer and Tom McNamara.
  20. I think they have the best players right this time Jaded but it should be noted that the team played well below its usual standards so getting in the best players today doesn't mean a great deal. I'll have more to say in my report which I'll try to get written up tomorrow.
  21. A very much undermanned Sandringham side started well but was outgunned by the Casey Scorpions out at Casey Fields to lose by 32 points in what ended as a disappointing afternoon for the club. Daniel Bell and Shane Valenti were the best performers from the Demon pojnt of view and Kyle Cheney put in a very encouraging effort. As stated elsewhere, Nathan Carroll was booked for charging his opponent in the third quarter.
