  2. Sandringham ran out comfortable winners by 28 points over Williamstown but the result was pretty meaningless as neither side was at anything like full strength with very few AFL listed players involved in the game. Colin Sylvia looked his usual rock star self and booted three goals but he was, as mentioned above, pretty rusty and in need of a run. I expect, if he pulls up well after today's half game, that he'll follow the formula and play three quarters next week and at least one more game before he would be considered for an AFL game. He needs to do plenty of work and appeared to be blowing hard on a few occasions. Clint Bartram was solid and got plenty of the ball but was not as outstanding as last week playing mainly off half back with a couple of runs through midfield. He was given three quarters this week and certainly shows a lot of promise for a kid who's only just turned 19. His disposal by hand and foot has improved a fair bit but he really tried to do too much at times and was penalised for that. Matthew Warnock was workmanlike in defence for the first half and he was later moved forward where he struggled a bit in the windy conditions that suited defenders more than forwards. With Sylvia off the ground the Zebra forward line looked a bit disorganised but then it had no Sautner or Poyas, Michael Newton wasn't eligible to play and Nick Smith has moved on. The Zebras kicked 11 behinds in a row before kicking their first goal for the second half midway through the final term. Isaac Weetra didn't take his place on the ground after injuring his hamstring again at training on Friday - it's back to rehab for him for a few weeks at least. There were no appearances either from Ben Holland, Brock McLean, Byron Pickett and Paul Wheatley who had all earlier been cleared to play. Perhaps the 5 day break between today and Friday night's season opener played a role in the decision not to play them? Peter Summers and Shane Valenti were the best of the regular Sandy players and Chad Liddell saw out the whole game for once. Chris Lamb was solid as usual in defence. A few of the younger Zebra players up from the Sandy Dragons look to have a bit of potential. Collingwood's Joffa was in attendance to lend the Willi boys his support but his gold winners jacket failed to materialise and I believe a few Collingwood/Williamstown supporters were reported lost and wandering aimlessly down Hampton Street in search of the northern and western suburbs after the game. Which reminds me, what do you get when you cross a magpie with a seagull? Sandringham 6.4.40 9.7.61 9.12.66 14.19.103 Williamstown 4.1.25 8.2.50 9.6.60 11.9.75 Goals: Valenti 4, Sylvia 3, Biddlecombe, Collyer, Gribbin, M. Johnston, McKenzie, Paule, Summers
  3. The only game in town this weekend is the clash of traditional rivals - Sandringham and Williamstown at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday. There is only ONE game and no reserves match as AFL listed players can only take part after receiving special permission - generally for players returning from injury. The big name back is Colin Sylvia which Isaac Weetra and Matthew Warnock return from injury. Clint Bartram is expected to play three quarters this week on his long road to recovery from an ankle injury. The match begins at 2.00pm. Admission Prices Adults: $5.00 Concession: $3.00 Visiting Members: $3.00 Sandringham and Melbourne Members: free admission on production of membership card. Thanks again to the SFC for making available the following Team Lists for Sunday's games: SENIORS - 25th March 2007 2.00pm SANDRINGHAM 1. Kenton Hall 2. Tom Paterakis 3. Shane Valenti 4. 4. Indeed it was Clint Bartram who played only a half a game today and he was one of the best coming off half back. Redleg got the message a bit wrong. It was Paul Wheatley who I had as BOG up to the main break and he continued on in that vein until he went off around three quarter time. Michael Newton ended with 5 goals 2 behinds and he could've kicked a couple more. The final score saw Sandringham win by 2 points 13.15.93 to 13.13.91. The Zebras were down to no reserves and a couple of players not 100% on the ground and they did well to hold on. Chad Liddell and Ezra Poyas only played half a game and Gallagher was also off in the final quarter. Lynden Dunn copped a bad whack to the face early in the game and we're hoping there was no fracture. PJ got a lot of the ball and marked and rucked well today. Shane Neaves played a good game as his back up. Godders worked hard and took a few knocks but kept bouncing up. Kicking still nothing much. Heath Neville was quiet early but got some of the ball later on. Adem Yze worked pretty well in the middle but was by no means outstanding. All in all, not enough to win a place back in the best 22. Sandringham 1.4.10 6.10.46 9.12.66 13.15.93 Port Melbourne 2.5.17 2.6.18 6.9.45 13.13.91 Goals: Newton 5, Wheatley 3, Yze 2, P Johnson, Neaves, Summers. Best: Wheatley, Summers, P Johnson, Bartram, Yze, Newton, Monahan Had a chat with Isaac Weetra who is pretty much recovered from his hamstring injury and is confident of getting some valuable game time in next week's practice match. Reserves: Port Melbourne 22.16.148 defeated Sandringham 7.7.49

  6. Breaking news. Former Demon and 2006 Sandy premiership player Phil Read has joined the Geelong VFL list for 2007.
  7. No, not the same one. This Ken Hall (full name Kenton Hall as dazzle wrote) has been around Zebraland for a few years and has played a handful of senior games. For the record:- Sandringham 13.21.99 defeated Bendigo 11.9.75 Goalkickers: Poyas 5 Crowe 3 Biddlecombe Garland Newton Petterd Summers In the reserves Sandringham 12.16.88 defeated Bendigo 6.10.46 You can't take much away from the results. Bendigo didn't have many of their Essendon listed players available and they tired badly as the game wore on. Jason Cloke is with Bendigo this year and is playing the same role in defence that he had at Collingwood.

  10. You're probably right Jumping Jack. The word is that Sauts kicked a lazy five in his first gallop for the year. Newton will probably have to play further afield but I don't think he's physically (and also perhaps mentally) ready for the rigours of FF so I'd suggest they keep him on a wing or a half back flank till he learns the caper.
  11. Zebra coach Mark Williams has predicted that three or four of this year's batch of youngsters coming up from the Sandringham Dragons TAC Cup Under 18 squad could follow Shane Valenti's lead and earn a senior VFL place in 2007. The newcomers from the Dragons (in alphabetical order) are:- Daniel Born (Date of birth 9.03.88) 185 cm 82 kg (Noble Park) Michael Curcio (30.08.88) 191 80 (St Bedes/Mentone) Rennie Gilchrist (22.11.88) 184 80 (Caulfield Grammar) Jack Hellier (15.08.88) 176 82 (Haileybury College) Tomi Johnston (2.02.88) 176 63 (Melbourne Unicorns) Sam Monaghan (7.04.88) 184 80 (East Sandringham) Jake Muir (24.05.1987) 190 88 (Old Brighton) Chris Richards (30.10.88) 170 64 (St Peters) Simon Richards (30.10.88) 173 71 (St Peters) Shane Tregear (27.04.88) 180 72 (Brighton Grammar) Jake Williams (23.08.88) 174 71 (Xavier College) Phil Zarra (7.10.88) 181 78 (Caulfield Grammarians) The lightly built Tomi Johnston joins his brother Mark at the club. They are the sons of former Carlton star Wayne Johnston. Monaghan was a Victorian Metro Under 18 representative last year and there are some big wraps for Zarra as well. In other news, the loss of promising midfielder Daniel Corp to Frankston has been confirmed but the Zebras may retain the exciting Mark Corrigan who was unlucky to miss out in making last year's premiership team.
  12. Sandringham will be playing an intra club practice game on Friday the 2nd, March at 5.30pm. The Game will be four quarters of 20 minutes, with central umpires from the VFL in charge of the game. All supporters are welcome to attend and check out our exciting new players for 2007. There will be at least 12 Melbourne players who do not make the trip to Mount Gambier playing. The Social Club will be open so join the supporters in the Club for a refreshing drink whilst watching the game. Later in the week I hope to have some details of the next crop of young recruits who have joined the Zebras from the Dragons U18's.
  13. Phil Cleary's website is currently carrying this cryptic message:- " The End of the VFA? The VFL supporters website is carrying stories about my departure from the ABC TV VFL commentary box. In time I'll provide the real story.." Meanwhile, things are quiet as a church mouse down at Sandy and the only news I have is of former players at other clubs - Liston Medallist and former Demon rookie and Zebra David Robbins has signed to play for Port Melbourne this year. Former Demon Benny Beams who played in Sandy's 2000 premiership team has retired from the Tassie Devils where he has been the captain.

  15. For the VFL fans and the supporters of Nick Sautner in particular, here is something you may not have seen in him [read here] I like the fact that he's such a modest unassuming fellow and I'm sure his fans over he would agree wholeheartedly:- "It's vital for me to balance my personal, business and sporting life. I play VFL footy for Sandringham. I have played in four premierships and have led the league goal kicking for six years, a competition record." Seriously though, he is being very modest because he's now played in five VFL premiership teams, not four - 1997, 200, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
  16. I've just updated my earlier post regarding the practice games. Please note that clubs can only play VFL listed players (and some AFL listed players if they receive special permission on the last weekend in March and therefore there will be no reserves game v Williamstown.
  17. Practice games for 2007 Sunday 11th March v Bendigo Bombers, Reserves 11:15am, Seniors 2:00pm Sunday 18th March v Port Melbourne, Reserves 11:15am, Seniors 2:00pm Sunday 25th March v Williamstown, Seniors 2:00pm. (Due to AFL restrictions on players on this weekend there will be no reserves practice game) Sunday 1st April v Casy Scorpions, Reserves 11:15am Seniors 2.00pm At this stage and subject to ground conditions, all practice games will be played at the Trevor Barker Beach Road Oval.
  18. Not much news out at Zebraland however, one new signing is Old Mazenod ruckman Dominic Dunne who was best on ground for the VAFA in its loss to the SA Amateurs during the season. That effort earned Dunne All Australian Amateur Under 23 recognition for 2006. Sandy losses are former Demon veteran Guy Rigoni who retired immediately after this year's grand final and two impressive younger players Mark Corrigan and Daniel Corp who look like moving on. Meanwhile at the club's AGM on Monday night John Kempf was awarded Life Membership along with the club's late president Gary Gilchrist who tragically passed away in July. Triple Premiership coach Mark Williams has re-signed to lead the Zebras for the next three years.
