  1. Diamond Joe, Diamond Jim, diamonds are for neddies....
  2. Barassi played some BOGs in grand finals, '59 was one of them where Barassi single handedly turned the game with two speccies and two goals in minutes: "This was one of the best second quarters ever seen at a Grand Final ... it was was the human dynamo, Barassi - the hero of many a final game who snatched the lead for the demons. No praise can be too high for this great team player. He pulled down a beauty out of the sky to kick the Demons' seventh goal and then kicked another goal on the run to give them a nine point lead."(p151, Barassi by Peter Lalor). Flower may have been a more highly skilled footballer but Barassi was peerless as a game turner and team motivator. He transformed matches by instigating breakaway plays, setting up the loose man and chain handballing. My two MFC heroes, nonetheless.
  3. * Our horror years, or the - decadus horribilis pre Roosus - was a much less competitive era than the one Robbie Flower played in.
  4. He's coached two AFL teams to premierships so hats off to him.
  5. Brent Crosswell, dubbed, "Tiger" because he called everyone by that name because he couldn't remember their names. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!
  6. Anyone know what day (and time) is Melbourne's last training session for the year?
  7. America's abominable behaviour towards central and south american states does not justify one-party states and elimination of political enemies. Gabriel Garcia Marquez in One Hundred Years of Solitude illustrates the nastiness and brutishness of leaders such as Battista and Castro.
  8. ...and installed himself.
  9. Haven't seen it referenced much, but how much of this massive $10m debt can be sheeted home to the coach who in his wisdom decided not to conciliate and thereby cut the Dons losses.
  10. PS You can pick the demon-lite supporters on here by the way they constantly sneer at ex-players.
  11. The trainer is no doubt a spud himself, if not half a potato chip.
  12. Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett asked to be traded to Geelong Really sad how an absolute champion of the competition wants to go back to mummy.
  13. My ABC/ Rothmans edit - not including the first exchanges:
  14. That's the end of the '64 grand final, and about the only coherent passage of play in the entire Rothman's film clip. (Youtube).
  15. Roet to Barassi to Townsend to Bourke to Mann. Unfortunately Mann missed the shot.
  16. Esp. If he plays angry. The quote about him not going back to collect his possessions was truly bizarre.
  17. I think the author is confusing Jordan Lewis, the still elite AFL player with Joe Lewis, the American heavyweight boxer who undoubtedly should not have fought on against Rocky Marciano,
  18. As John Kennedy said of the little boy who walked into the shop: Hawks now have to pay the price.
  19. Transferring to Hawthorn, or 'Bronzing up', formerly a prisoner's ritual and now ingrained in the national draft...
  20. How much did they get for VFL/AFL park Waverley again?
  21. lots of punching but Matthews' work on Bews, Giles and Smith was in a class of its own. prob. the worst was O'Dea taking out the brilliant John Greening. Matthews' conduct was enough to make me hate hawthorn for decades.
  22. Have to laugh at the petty jealousy here dressed up as supporter commentary.
  23. Why should "sides above" have to qualify and re-qualify? The home and aways should mean something more than burn out the top teams. All the same, well done doggies a brilliant melbourne cup victory running down all the favourites in the straight!
  24. The only question mark was awarding bulldogs a bye after last round. Takes away all reward for high ladder positions. Rewards the nothing to lose attitude.
