  1. Add Bennell to the outs and I'd be happy with those. We need some class and grunt for us to even get within 10 goals of the Cats next Sunday!

bennell is class. the only reason you could drop him would be his light body

    in - robbo, grimes, maric

    out - newton, bartram, jetta

all straight swaps. i do love the way jetta chases though

  2. Good post. I actually thought Bennell has been very promising both weeks...

me too. i don't know what he did to deserve this criticism. he didn't get much of the ball but I thought he did well when he did get it. I have been very impressed with him, especially given he is still tiny.

  3. Of course we are a chance. I actually think we should win it - they have a bucket load of injuries/us very few and they are a month behind us in preparation. But even a comprehensive win wouldn't convince me that we are going to be any good this year. We will have to wait to see how we go in round 1. nab cup means very very little (on field, off field it could mean a bit if we do well).

  4. Dwayne needs to be reminded how much our supporters raised in ONE MONTH for debt demolision. Who gives a [censored] if the afl, media, other clubs don't care/notice if we continue to exist, because we do care and we showed in august that we still do have plenty of support and will fight.

  5. I'm not a huge wrap for him (and was hoping we would try to offload him in trade week given he would have some value as a recent first round draft pick) but he does have some very useful attributes that may allow him to develop into a good player. Something i noticed previously was that while he is very good at staying with his forward on the lead etc, he is pretty useless defensively, ie. he'll be there but he won't be able to get the spoil in. I'm hoping this is something that can be taught. I think issues about his disposal are overrated and from what i have seen, he is adequate in that area. Worth persisting with but im not expecting much.

  6. No way, don't let him go - give him 2 years. He was (finally!) fantastic in the backline this year, one of the few highlights and real improvers this year. And i really noticed our ability to get the ball out of defence fall dramatically in the last few games when he got injured, and I think his loss played a significant part in that. IMO he is best 22 if he can keep this year's form up. I'll be pretty annoyed if we let him go because we won't offer 2 years - our money issue really shouldn't be coming into it as he wouldn't be asking for much. Carlton again...FFS!

  7. I think some of you have it so wrong on Bell and are letting your biases against him show. Although, I don't think we actually had any players who genuinely played a good game, I think Bell was our best. He did make mistakes but was ok with the ball (no worse than most of the team) and shut out Ebert then didn't do too badly on Motlop, who was dominating everyone else. Going by Bailey's comments post game it seems he also thinks Bell did a reasonable job - so take the blinkers off!

  8. The whole match was played at the intensity of a VFL 2nds game, so the 80% effeciency was hardly outstanding.

I'm hoping like hell that Morton becomes the elite player that we sadly need, but he does things that lack polish, and age can't excuse. I'm not surprised that he hasn't been nominated for the NAB Rising Star prior to this round.

Palmer and Morton are on a par with their foot disposal, but the difference is that Palmer is pretty much Freo's no. 1 on-baller, and is targeted by the opposition far more than Morton.

I have watched morton closely for a few weeks as a friend of mine loves to bag him (carlton supporter) and Morton has regularly made some terrible clangers. BUT yesterday, apart from that early OOB, his disposal was accurate AND smart. He did some very intelligent things with the football and was quite evasive at times. Even my friend was impressed and agreed that he was one of the best on ground.

Polish? What about that bulk against essendon before he kicked the goal in the last quarter. He did another very impressive one yesterday where he faked the handball and took out the player, then handballed to a free player and we were off.

Morton definitely throws up some shocking kicks more often than we would like, but he also has kicked some brilliant goals from outside 50 and done some very TJ-like spotting up of targets in the 50. He is a ball magnet, good evasive skills, good vision, and a good football brain. His kicking can be anything from hideous to amazing but he definitely has the tools and with a few seasons under his belt I think he will be smashing them (and well above Palmer).

  9. All winning did for us yesterday was going from having pick 18 to having pick 19. Even if you're a fan of tanking for picks, there wasn't a whole lot to gain from a loss from our point of view.

And in the whole scheme of things, winning is more valuable than moving down from 18 to 19. Seriously, anyone who is angry we won today has to get some perspective. We moved from 18 to 19 - big deal! If we were to win the next 2 games that would be a completely different story, but there is no doubt we won more than we lost yesterday.
