  1. Well if you can't find batsmen that are good enough to bat at 3 or 4 outside of the team, what's the answer? It's to lift Clarke up the order, isn't it? I know you don't like it titan_uranus, but Clarke now understands it, "there's no other choice"...isn't that what he said post match. He has the technique and ability and know how to occupy the crease and nut out gritty innings. If we lose him early it will appear we're papering cracks, but we have to try it, becuase the guys up the order aren't achieving what they're supposed to. I agree with your comments on Cowan and Khawaja. They have good technique, Cowan has proven he can hang around despite minimal centuries to date. We need guys who can hang around as well as score to provide support. That's why there's the Cowan-Warner combo. Watson and Hughes appear shaky given Clarke's comments and we'll know soon enough which way they will go, but IMO Khawaja should polish his boots. Clarke has got to move up to 4 if Hughes goes, Khawaja at 5. If Watson goes, Hughes and Clarke shuffle up, Khawaja still at 5. Henriques at 6. Wade 7. Lyon in for Doherty. Starc in for Maxwell (pitch permitting). England is a different proposition to India in terms of conditions and all is not lost, sure. I think our quicks are sort of settled for England. It's the middle and top order that need organising and perhaps our choice of spinner. I would have said Lyon would have been a lock, but it appears that's not the case with the selectors.
  2. Too much red wine can cause balance problems...:
  3. So am I. I want a contest! And I want 5 days at Old Trafford. Not 3. I still agree with 45, he has to go up IMO. Whilst he is batting well at 5, he can do the same at 4 or 3. I'd move him up to 4. My current Twelve for the Ashes. Cowan Warner Watson Clarke Khawaja Maxwell Henriques Wade Starc Siddle Pattinson Lyon The selectors have made a rod for their own back IMO. They shielded Hughes from Sth Africa, JI admitted as much when he said they prefer Hughes play against Sri Lanka as a preparation for India, England. They'd rather Hughes gain confidence and form against a softly Sri Lanka on the hard flat decks of Australia, rather than the pace and torment of the South African bowlers. If they were fair dinkum, they should have wheeled him out against Steyn, Philander and Morkel - if they had England in mind for Hughes. IMO Khawaja has better technique than Hughes does. I still think (like 45) Clarke being the premier batsman of the team needs to move up, Khawaja at 5 for me. The top 3 can occupy the crease, they get starts but don't seem to be getting on in their innings. Warner and Watson need to value their wickets more. They do score relatively quick, just needs more concentration. Lazy at times. Warner getting bowled around his legs is the perfect example.
  4. Agree. Where to from here? Put Lyon back in straight away for the 3rd, despite a knock to his confidence? As for the top order, I would imagine Usman is getting a little closer to selection.
  5. lol. I was going to say if you want to see more of 0/260..... Adjusted.
  6. Fox sports news have just suggested Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc likely to miss 2nd Test. Doherty and Maxwell in. Huge shock for Lyon given Clarke's support for him 2 days ago. Spinners paradise predicted once again.
  7. http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-south-africa-2012/content/story/592948.html Don't think that's a good move Nasher.
  8. Updated Tendulkar, Starc & Henriques figures (ref: espncricinfo)
  9. He's close.
  10. Thompson to me is considered utterly consistent in terms of output. He doesn't perform when it suits him, he performs when required dc. That was the point I was making. The Wiz was good, every now and then. Thompson to me is a more valuable player.
  11. The only concern I have is the performances and progress of those in my team, old dee. I couldn't care less how former MFC players go at opposition clubs. Just like I couldn't care for Travis Johnstone and other former players who have had little influence after leaving and only seemed to perform when it suited them, not necessarily when required or on a consistent basis. There is however one exception. Scott Thompson still burns.
  12. Ok, it's a choke. lol. Fwiw in Qld's innings a second gamer piled on the runs near the end, the Vics could have had them out for 115-120. Despite the rain, I agree the Vics should have still been able to chase down the 147. I thought McDermott's ball was an absolute cracker to get the 8th? wicket I think. I definitely thought we had it sewn up when the Vics got a boundary needing 5 off 9? Until McDermott got his wicket. From then on it was up to what was left of the tail (no guarantees). Thought McDermott and Harris bowled quite well. Don't discount Harris, he still has something left to give for Australia I think.
  13. Can you really blame the AFL for taking his performances in 2012 into account? Just saying.
  14. Stosur? I watched it last night, at 4 for, I thought the Vics did well to get back in it and used the power play at the right time. Particularly with rain around. Ryan Harris' short ball to McKay was a cracker in the last and was pretty much the sealer with the Vics still needing 3 to win off 3, despite the edge by Ahmed to first slip next ball. Would you call that a choke? I wouldn't.
  15. Understand the frustration TD & Macca, but I think they're being prudent with Pattinson. I'll take on board any criticism that comes my way in my support on CA for this, he's a quality player. I acknowledge my support for Starc to be named in the Boxing Day Test, I believe that is a different scenario. Starc hadn't had the interruptions as Pattinson has and was in form and raring to go with several days rest before the 'G' test. The slightest bit of doubt in PAttinson and back-to-back Tests (3 day break) - not to mention in India - would have accumulated to this decision. It's hard to win in India, let alone with a squad that many are in India for the first time in a Test series. Our "Final" I believe is the Ashes and I think CA and the team also maintain this is the focus in terms of preparation. By the way I heard (containing my excitement here) from one of my work colleagues here, that Fawad's application is in the process of being fast tracked for Australian citizenship and should have it very soon. There's a little mail for the D'Land cricket fans. Hot. off. the. press. Source: A close friend of Ahmed.
  16. You should have seen Moises bat Rogue. Impressive given the conditions and position. Yes, Tendulkar was his usually damaging self. Apparently scored some runs in the lead up too.
  17. Henriques and Lyon got through to stumps with a lead of 40. Henriques 75*. Good concentration by the two with a last wicket stand of 57. India well and truly home unless there's a miracle on day 5.
  18. Hopefully Nasher is watching
  19. 75 overs gone in the innings and Ishant Sharma takes the ball for the first time this innings.... Edit: Henriques brings up his 50 with a six over long on.
  20. Agree. Must say though, there's a few in the dressing room that can take a leaf out of Henriques approach at the crease. Great debut. India will have to bat again now.
  21. Oh yeah, no doubt. With 8 participants and 8 countries to choose from, there were never going to be 11 top liners. The last few rounds were always as it's been referred to as - a bit of... "scraping the bottom of the barrel."
  22. What about the Vic spin bowler? How soon can he get his Australian citizenship?
  23. I was really disappointed with his bowling late to Dhoni, when Dhoni was closing in on the double century. Giving him that much room outside off and a little too short. Money for jam for Dhoni to play it backward of point or down to 3rd man. Leaking runs.
  24. Macca, Biffen, Django - you all have done well selecting your sides. Django, despite your hiccups in the draft you've come through quite well IMO. I had no idea du Plessis was averaging close to 70 and from memory he went middraft, so good pick-up. And hasn't Dhoni put an asterisk or exclamation mark for Nasher to consider in this current Test! haha. Macca you've got good support in Watson with your bowling line-up. Your spinners are very good and they may have to bowl decent spells to give Bresnan and Khan a chance to put the feet up. Biffen, I'm a big Pattinson fan and no doubt he'd rip through most top orders with Broad. I'm not so big on Sharma - maybe it's that massive Adam's apple!

Enjoyed the Best XI draft and thankyou guys for your interest and partcipation. It's been something to keep our minds off other things (ie.Investigation) even if it was just for short spurts. Hopefully we can do it all again next summer. I basically tried to get star quality in early through the draft with the runs on the board so-to-speak and get in-form players. NZ may have proved a stumbling block, but given what was on offer, I elected for Guptill, because most of my middle order was already complete and I knew I could get Samuels from the WI in the next two rounds or so; who had the runs on the board with a last start 260. As well as nailing Khan late due to the fact that nearly all participants had already selected one from Pakistan. And given the lack of quality openers on offer at the time it was a no brainer. I consider my pace attack first class, headed by Steyn and Khan, with great averages, an in-form Starc providing left arm variation and Panesar to compliment with turn. Snagging De Villiers early 2nd round secured a very good keeper/batsman and together with the in form middle order batsmen in Tendulkar, Samuels and Trott, ensures a pile of runs. Henriques is a relatively new all round cricketer on the scene and adds to the batting depth, whilst supporting the bowling with his right arm medium-fast. A very handy acquisition at pick 87 and has already shown how well he can bat on the dustbowl in trying conditions in India against word class spinners in an intimidating environment. He's no slouch with the ball either highlighted by his bag of wickets prior to the Test which helped him earn selection. The side contains four double centurions, plus high scores of 193 and 189 from Dilshan and Guptill respectively. My spinner Monty Panesar is 12/2 with 5w/10w hauls - only slightly bettered by his teammate Swann @ 14 and 2. I was pleasantly surprised I was able to draft him so late. Overall I'm pleased with the strength and balance of the team, having starting and finishing with the second last pick. The bowling contains very good bowling averages, with three of the four recognised bowlers all averaging in the 20's highlighted by Steyn's terrific average at 22. Plus a world class spinner. The batting is generally well experienced and each of them occupy the crease making them very good Test picks. Henriques has played an enormous amount of First Class cricket, captained at State level, and his perserverance and quality has earned him selection at Test level as a mid-lower order.
