.......... and more than a few Melbourne players (and staff) I reckon.

Wow. I remember when that tower was built .......... always a different time of day depending on which clock face you looked at! I haven't been down that way for maybe 25 years. How about my other old watering hole, the Red Bluff Hotel? .........still a pub or (more likely) an apartment tower by now I guess.

Geez mention of the Beauie pub brings back some fond memories (of the 60s in my case, and definitely before white shoes came into vogue). I hail from just up the road at Black Rock, but attended Beauie High. At that time Black Rock was part of the Dees recruiting zone, but I think Beaumaris might have been in StKilda's. Johnny Beckwith was recruited to the Dees from 'the Rocks' and went on to captain the (then) mighty Demons to two premierships, and earn a permanent place in VFL / AFL folklore for his precision kicking from the back pocket. This thread has digressed way off course, but isn't it nice to be discussing the Dees in a positive vein?

In some ways I've been lucky, because I've been fortunate enough to taste the glory (albeit a long, long time ago), and it's well worth the wait I promise you. Hang in there Doreen, we'll be right!

1981 and 2013 were similar in that most of us were full of hope at the the start of the year, and destitute before year's end. But that's where the similarity ends in my view. In 1981 we had 'the Messiah' as our new coach, and most believed that a return to the heady days of the 1950s and '60s was imminent. We had been told by the man himself that it was a "five year plan" and we believed every word. We still had hope in spades. In 2013 we have had Mark Neeld and a stand-in coach, and even our most fervent supporters know that we are light-years away from being competitive with the best. Most of us are still looking for hope, or pinning what little we have left on an un-named coach, a handful mostly tryers, a CEO who has been with us for a few short months and some untried youngsters. I've been a Demon from the early 1950s and will be until I draw my last breath, but 2013 has come close to breaking me.

I remember her well Nasher. Lovely! You should put up her 8yo photo as your new avatar, as a reminder of how long it's been!

Who is truly Bad ? Plus what hope has Craig ?

Good questions Pipefitter. We can only hope that our new coach and fitness staff (whoever they might be) can identify and fix the problem(s). It's sad to see Trenners out there busting his gut week after week and getting nowhere. He's a shell of the player we recruited just a few years ago. -
6. N. Jones - good as usual 5. Viney - good in patches 4. Clisby - rough, but played with heart 3. Pedersen - earned his place today 2. M. Jones - just ok 1. Trengove - seemed to try some of the time. (that's probably unfair, but you know what I mean) The rest should hang their heads in shame. They tarnished a once proud jumper, and ripped the heart out of this once proud supporter.

I can't imagine feeling more despondent than I do right now. Just when I thought things couldn't get any lower, someone drops soiled paper on me and pulls the chain.

N. Jones?

Three things I'd do: give up following football; sue the AFL for $10,000,000 to cover unfulfilled dreams, dashed hopes, untold emotional damage, unrequited love and a new cat for my wife. engage WJ and Redleg as my legal team (maybe Demonlanders could contemplate joining me in a class action).

Opel going ... we will need a new major sponsor.

Thanks NSC. Please stay sufficiently sober to remember the essential details.

The Split - AFL Endorsed Ticket or The Stockdale Ticket
Deeoldfart replied to rpfc's topic in Melbourne Demons
We need to give up on the 'blame game' right now if we want a future, let alone a decent future!! (ps. Yes, I know that your comment was said in jest BBB) -
Well I love it, and I want one for Christmas!
-
Totally agree alias. With Mike Brady penning the words / tune, I'll wager that 97.25% of us will love it! As 'C'mon Demons' became a bit of a theme during the Northey era, let the new song become a booming crescendo for the era which is about to dawn!
-
Me too wyl, but no doubt it's more in hope than anything else. Being a lifelong Dees supporter can have that effect.
-
Nice selective response 3165! I don't know, but I expressed an opinion (which is what Demonland is about). I agree that the selection panel is best placed to make those judgements, and like you (and everyone else on here), I hope they get it right.

Sorry, but I can't find any posts that say "we don't need a coach that can take the club to the top". ...............but if we could find a coach who can do both, wouldn't that be the best of both worlds? ...... or do you think that the capacity of senior coach to inspire supporters, members and potential sponsors is completely irrelevant?. FWIW, I think any of Roos, Williams or Eade would make a better fist of doing both than Laidley Now that you've had your say about other posts, do you have any views about Laidley as a potential senior coach at Melbourne?
-
I can't see this going anywhere. Laidley is a good match-day coach imo, but he definitely does not have the aura to quickly attract disillusioned members back to the fold, or have potential sponsors knocking at the door of PJ's office. Whilst not at the forefront of selection criteria for our new coach, these would have to be important considerations given the current financial predicament of our club.

Very strange question oslik! There could be several logical answers, but the one I prefer is big Max saying something along the lines of "I reckon I can be one of the elite ruckmen in the AFL in two years time, so why lock myself into a longer deal on moderate pay, when I'll be able to command top dollar in two year's time?".
