BEST OF THE REST by Meggs
While the draw was a joke, I believe it was the injuries more than the draw that hurt us. We've ALWAYS had a tough draw (other than 2017-2018 when the fixture was fairer) and it's never really stopped us being one of the top sides. That said, it will be interesting to see what draw we get for 2025. We should be given a middling draw, but if, say, that means we get three of the 2024 top six I bet we get North, Adelaide and Brisbane, not Freo, Port and Hawthorn. 😠

AFLW 2024 Trade and Draft Dates
This could be a win for everyone. I've felt Lil has had the game go past her for a couple of seasons now, but she's such a club person, foundation player, best mates with the captain (as I understand it), that tapping her on the shoulder at 26 and telling her she needs to look elsewhere could be problematic. But if she gets a decent offer from another club that she's happy with, and takes it, much awkwardness and potential unpleasantness could be avoided.

AFLW: Rd 10 vs Pies
Not defending Hawthorn in any way, but Brisbane, the defending champion, played two of the top eight this year. 17 games or stop pretending the AFL is serious about women's football.

AFLW: Rd 9 vs FNQ Hawks
Possibly the issue is that coming off our "compressed" schedule we still haven't been give a full week between matches. Three games in eleven days is about what very team copped at some point, but then we had a six day break to Richmond then five days to Hawthorn. Why, of all teams, schedule us to play on the Thursday?

AWESOME FOURSOME by Meggs
When you have only ten or eleven rounds in a competition with 18 teams you are always going to get an unbalanced fixture, even if the organizers try to keep things balanced. The problem we have with the AFLW is that the organizers don't care. In fact it is even worse than that, as they are happy to take advantage of the short season to actively rig the draw to try to give the impression of a balanced competition. I guess the key is to remember that the AFL is not running a sporting competition. From their perspective they are managing a product. Shameful.

AFLW: Rd 08 vs Richmond
We haven't helped ourselves by letting Richmond kick the last 3.2 this week and us beating St. Kilda by 1.8 last week. We could easily be only 7% behind Essendon now instead of 18%. But we had so much percentage to make up that it will probably come down to us having to beat Hawthorn and Collingwood and hope that Richmond beats Essendon next week. If that happens we are in regardless of percentage. Freo and Port should be able to keep ahead of us given their draw, though I suppose there is a chance the Suns at home might beat Port now they've found some form. But we just have to win both matches!

AFLW: 2024 Fixture
Yep, that's how I see it. We have a much, much tougher draw than those we are up against for a final eight spot. And that's not even considering the injuries we've copped. But then it bodes well for next year - Harris, A. Mackin and Beasley back, games into Gall and Campbell this year, and a number of our key players still 25 and under.

AFLW: Rd 07 (Game 2) vs St Kilda
If we win all three remaining H&A games and finish 7-4 we'd have to be very unlucky to miss the finals, regardless of percentage. If we go 6-5 with a poor percentage I suspect we'll almost certainly miss out.

AFLW: Rd 07 vs Adelaide
A four day break is bad, but at some stage every team is copping it. What makes it worse for us is that it is after an interstate game at night. That really cuts into recovery time. No need for it to be that way, but constructing a balanced and fair draw doesn't even register as an issue with the AFL.

2024 Brownlow Medal
Part of the problem is the fact that too many people rate the Brownlow way too highly. When it first started, pre-radio and television, and more limited coverage in the print media, I understand it was the only competition best and fairest award. As such it meant something. Then, as the coverage of the game expanded dramatically in the 60s and 70s and there were awards left right and centre, the then VFL decided to promote it as it was their B&F and wanted it to still stand as the peak individual award. So they let Channel 7 televise it, build the hype, and make it into the big palaver it is today. As someone once said, would we take it so seriously if it wasn't called the Brownlow, but "The Umpires Award"? 🤣

Spot on. Good ol' Ronald Dale made this point decades ago......

2024 Brownlow Medal
You're memory is fine, it was Greg Wells pipped by Len Thompson. Wells was my fav player, which is showing my age somewhat. 😆 You're also right about the way the votes were counted - rigged for maximum dramatic effect.

2024 Brownlow Medal
I recall many years ago a journalist (too many years ago to remember who) telling the story of how after a game where Peter Hudson had kicked 16 the journo said to the umpire that he knew he couldn't tell him who he gave the Brownlow votes to, but that obviously Huddo would have got the three. The ump replied that as didn't give any votes to Hudson he felt it was Ok to say so (questionable). The journo asked gobsmacked how could he not give him a vote given he kicked 16. The ump replied that he thought he'd only kicked about four. 🙄

AFLW: Rd 03 vs North Melbourne
I have no doubt that in most games the bounce of the ball will favour one team, but today we've been killed.

Westie getting a lot of it for Hawthorn, but don't think she'd have a very high effective disposal percentage, though.....

AFLW GAMEDAY: Rd 01 vs Geelong
After looking at the draw I said if we can be 2-1 after three rounds I'll be very happy. I guess we are half way there. Very good win. Given their three second half goals were all due to horrendous stuff ups on our part right in front of their goal there is some room for easy improvement. Harris' shoulder is a worry. Being totally removed from the situation I'm not in a great position judge, but my gut feeling is she probably needs surgery to fix it, but doesn't want to to be sidelined from her football/boxing/work for two to three months. So she just does the rehab/rest each time it goes and gets it passable enough to play. But looking how minimal the knocks needed to be tonight to put her out of action I don't think that's a realistic option anymore. Surgery now would most likely finish her for this season, so if I'm right perhaps she plays on as best she can and then the club tells her she has to get it done as soon as the season is over.

AFLW GAMEDAY: Practice Match vs Port Adelaide
Losing a "match simulation" to Carlton didn't bother me. And I know it's still only a practice match, but this, on the other hand........🙁

AFLW Sign, Draft and Trade Period 2023-24
Yes this is interesting. I would assume that the highly rated girls who know they are going to be drafted would be in a position to nominate the state in which they want to play, knowing they will be selected. But for the girls who aren't so confident of being picked up going national definitely improves their chances. For example the Eagles and Dockers only have seven picks between them, so if you nominate WA you'd need to be in at least the top seven selections for the entire state or you're going to miss out. There is always the Supplemental Selection Period after the draft, but I'm sure they don't want to be left hanging and hoping.

Training Ground?
I'm assuming they'd tart up Glen Huntly Park which is beside the track. Otherwise the idea of an oval that could be used for matches would probably not be possible.

AFLW Sign, Draft and Trade Period 2023-24
From the AFLW website; "The Demons have been adamant throughout that pick No.13 must be included in any trade talks, but it's understood the Bombers had initially put forward their pick No.53 in an attempt to secure the deal." #53 for Maddie Gay. Yep, nothing's changed at Bomberland! 🤣

Training Ground?
No probs, just my take on how it might effect the women's program and my day long expeditions to Casey.
