  1. Just to be absolutely clear - the AFL Tribunal is not a Court of Law. There's a specific AFL document that sets out its conduct: https://resources.afl.com.au/afl/document/2023/03/01/9c9bdc05-2377-4ffb-a8a0-885835edcaf1/2023-AFL-Tribunal-Guidelines.pdf On P.18 in examples of reportable offences, the Maynard charge of Rough Conduct: Careless Conduct, Severe Impact, High Contact the example is Patrick Dangerfield on Jake Kelly E1 2021: Remarkably similar to the Maynard on Brayshaw incident.

I think it's very likely we're working behind the scenes to promote with the AFL that head contact is out of the question and that Maynard should get his just desserts. It would be pretty hypocritical to challenge JVR's suspension at the same time

We eventually got what we wanted in Level 4 behind the PRE goals. Against Collingwood we had Row A but the metal bar obscures the view. The system kept trying to give us A again in all the Bays I tried until I guess some tickets sold. We're in B which should be better.

Will it be a BG or a Disco that sees us Stayin' Alive this Friday Night Fever?
  7. If they were ebullient we'd be hearing reports of "they don't care". Of course they're hurting, they know more than anyone what they let slip. I predict a big statement on Friday.

I think we need to play JJ for Gus, he's the next most capable mid we have and we need to re-establish the flexibility of pushing Petracca forward if we need to score to win. Sparrow and JJ will need to play substantial midfield minutes. We need to replace JVR with a tall, we were running with the minimum configuration of one ruck and 6 talls against Collingwood and we can't afford to go shorter. None of the options are ideal. With McKay out it's less imperative that we increase our defensive height, if he'd been playing I would have been in favour of Tomlinson. I think we've got Grundy, Schache or the Hail Mary of Turner forward. I think Grundy is the best of a limited set of options. As good as Max was against Collingwood, I think his "take from the ruck clearance" giraffe kicks, while they gain territory, are counter-productive, because they are too easy to defend. We need to rely on our gun midfield to win the clearance and kick more penetratingly. Grundy in the ruck can't hurt here. Max's major value is his contested marking and aerial contest. He needs to bring this, including forward, on Friday. That's what he signed up for in the Gawndy deal and the rubber is hitting the road. Laurie was off the pace in the full match heat against Collingwood. Maybe he learned enough to stand him in good stead against Carlton and hopefully the sub won't be needed so early. Frankly I would have recommended Harmes and his big body but I hear he did his hamstring in the scratch match. Spargo is an alternative with his smart delivery and he may be able to get his hands on it more if he comes on later when the heat has gone out. The partial Hail Mary of Turner as sub and then push Rivers into the midfield late has appeal to me. We could also then try Smith back, Turner forward late if we need a spark. I'm going with that. Out: Gus, JVR, Laurie (sub) In: JJ, Grundy, Turner (sub)
  9. Not wholly, but it partly is why we lost, because it reduced our flexibility to push Petracca forward to score and that hurt us.
  10. You've posted some batturd crazy stuff over the past 20 years or so both on Demonology and here, but you've really crossed the line with this unhinged commentary. Demonlanders should be ashamed? How about Collingwood supporters chanting "Collingwooood" as Gus goes off on the stretcher. Melbourne supporters are rightly incensed by what has happened and as time has progressed, instead of becoming more calm, even the most rational Demon supporters I know have become even more upset. Your suggestion that we should feel some sympathy for Maynard, a thug with a history of premeditated violence - see Ed Langdon's "all duck, no dinner" incident, who clearly came out with a will to inflict damage and did so - is deeply insulting. All our sympathy is rightly with Angus Brayshaw and his family. The incident had a material impact on the outcome of a critical match because it limited our flexibility to send Petracca forward to score. All as a result of an act that can most generously be described as reckless. You absolutely have the right to post your opinion and I have the right to criticise it. You need to take a good long hard look in the mirror and reflect on what you see..

At home games when the team runs out we play the opening bars on Eminem's Lose Yourself: Look, if you had one shot or one opportunity To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment Would you capture it or just let it slip? We let it slip against Collingwood in that first quarter of the QF and have paid the price. It all comes down to that in this SF and beyond.

    I would for Kossie though.

Good thread @dazzledavey36 As I've argued elsewhere, we not going to change our playing method unless we change our coach which is unlikely in the medium term. Our best approach is to upgrade our personnel to maximise the value of our method. We need more dangerous, damaging forwards. We need a true tall contested marking threat and that's Harry Petty. We seem to be trying to address the medium forward need with Shane McAdam. We also need more ground level genuine threat who can convert difficult opportunities in congestion like Kossie. Chandler is a good player and in a game style like Collingwood's he'd be a very effective weapon but in our game style he's hampered because he doesn't have truly elite skills. If Nick Watson can transfer his U18 impact to AFL level then I think he's exactly what we need. Paired with Kossie he'd be an additional threat in our F50 and make Kossie even better. Yes, I see @Lil_red_fire_engine comment that many of his highlights are marks on a lead, but he also very good at ground level - quick and evasive and is very good kick on both feet - in play and set shot. The focus would need to be on his ground level impact because clearly he has a separation and marking weapon but that's less functional in our game style.
  18. No I think one week is correct - Careless, High, Medium (McStay did have to go off for a concussion assessment) https://resources.afl.com.au/afl/document/2021/03/22/221593f5-9b5b-46c7-b038-b032283fcd41/2021-AFL-Tribunal-Guidelines.pdf
  19. There are 3 parameters in the MRO calculation: Conduct: Intentional or Careless Contact: High/Groin or Body Impact: Severe, High, Medium, Low "Impact" is included specifically for the element you've raised. The Impact of Maynard's action was clearly Severe, whereas the Impact of JVR's action was Medium. Both the other parameters were the same Careless and High. Therefore Maynard clearly warrants a higher penalty. If Christian actually followed the MRO guidelines accurately and consistently then most of the angst about decisions would go away.
  20. Agree. "Footy action" is a ridiculous defence because the MRO specifically cites "careless" and "intentional". "Careless" clearly applies to a "footy act" carelessly executed and gone wrong. You don't carelessly punch a player in the head unless you were trying to punch the ball in a footy act. You don't carelessly kick a player in the leg unless you were trying to kick the ball off the ground. If you do either of these things outside that scope then it's "intentional" and that what that stricter interpretation is there for.
  21. How about we go after Harrison Petty from Melbourne, I wonder what it would take to get him across?
