PREGAME: Rd 24 vs Collingwood
I can see the rationale in not playing ANB this week given we're one year short of the wild card round, meaning this game would be match of the round as opposed to a dead rubber under the wild card format. He's not going to be with us next year, so why accrue another 120 minutes of game time with a player that isn't part of our future. They could give Laurie the minutes that ANB would have received. Laurie should be eying off 20 senior games next year. It's exactly the same dilemma as playing BBB at the expense of Turner or Petty missing out on forward line cohesion minutes this weekend. But I expect ANB will be playing a farewell game in front of the fans.

I'd say he'll just end up staying at Port.

Wildcard Weekend
Imagine beating Collingwood this week with the opportunity of playing finals.

Wildcard Weekend
I do find it odd that most posters are against it, and yet which club would get one of the most benefits out of it this year? Which club would still be in the hunt heading into this weekend? Which club's supporters would be genuinely pumped up about this week with the chance of still playing in September? Which club's supporters would've enjoyed the GC win with the knowledge that genuine finals implications were on the line, not just a late season 'feel good' dead rubber. I refuse to believe that passionate die hard posters against the wild card would thumb their nose at an opportunity of playing a stand alone round of football with the chance to play finals. I know the club and its sponsors would embrace the opportunity. And lastly, for those that state the wild card weekend rewards mediocrity. It actually places a premium on finishing top 6 which guarantees you a final berth.

Wildcard Weekend
We’ll I’d imagine if the Wild Card was implemented this year, we’d definitely get back the 10,000 people that you were concerned about were not going to turn up this Friday, because it was a dead rubber.

RIP Sam Landsberger
Enjoyed his work each week on Fox Footy’s Tackle. Very tragic news.

Wildcard Weekend
Collingwood 10th V Melbourne 12th heading into round 24. Winner likely finishes 10th. Next year that would get you a spot in the wild card. That would’ve meant our win over Gold Coast last week would’ve had massive ramifications under the wild card model. A disastrous season actually could’ve turned into September action. Everyone still dead against the wild card?

Port Adelaide Chasing Kozzy Again
A club or 2 raises interest in an opposition player that is good. Cutting edge journalism...

The horse has probably bolted on this one, but what an addition he could've been to our club. 60 meter spear passes from half back, or threading the needle with inside 50 targets. Exactly the attributes we're crying out for.

Premiership Hero Ben Brown Retires
A couple of weeks back, I would've said yes. However, if Goodwin is serious in relation to playing JVR/Turner/Petty as forwards once again next year, then every game counts in terms of building cohesion and continuity with the 3. Therefore it would be a bit of a waste of time and player development in playing BBB to be honest. BBB was fantastic in the last 10 weeks of the 2021 season, and genuinely helped us in the round 3 win over Port this year. But I don't think he needs a farewell game to be honest.

Melbourne Finals 2024 - Mathematical Chance
In hindsight the Port loss was the one that got away. Didn’t feel like it at the time though. Had we nailed those late shots in the loss, next weekend would be a hell of a lot more interesting.

Kate Roffey
Can only assume Kate’s overseas on holidays. Imagine Kennett or McGuire avoiding the media and/or its members in one of their respective club’s worst PR weeks in history.

GAMEDAY: Rd 23 vs Gold Coast
• Petracca, Oliver, May and Windsor out. *Miller back for GC to further strengthen a potent midfield. •South East Queensland’s hottest day forecasted in 4 months. * MFC’s public relations at its lowest ebb since Norm Smith and the MFC had a minor disagreement. *MFC’s first dead rubber since round 23 2019. Aside from the above, I’m pretty bullish about today.

An external review of the Melbourne Football Club is required!
In the Carlton game we absolutely did not have all the momentum in the next 3 quarters. We outscored them by 8 points between quarter time and three quarter time. Then yes, we came home with a wet sail but left our run far too late. What are the odds of a team winning a game from behind from a centre bounce with 40 seconds on the clock (after Gawn's goal). I bet it hardly ever happens. The GWS game we conceded 12 of the next 15 goals after quarter time. That's not paying the bills and highlights everything wrong with us this year in terms of putting together 4 quarters. Did I think we would win when were 5 goals up? Sure? Did I think we would win when were 2 points down with 70 seconds left? No, and therefore I don't see this GWS game and the Carlton game as ones that got away.

I'm not buying into the "we'd be 5th on the ladder if we won all the close games." Firstly, unless you're Collingwood of 2022 and 2023, you're simply not winning all games decided by 6 points or less. Secondly, the Carlton and GWS losses were false economies and realistically we were never winning. Carlton spanked us for the majority of the game and lead for basically 100% of the game. and it took a hail Mary chance to snatch it with 30 seconds left. The GWS game was over when they kicked 4 very quick unanswered goals, and you're simply not overcoming a 26 point last quarter lead to a quality outfit. On the matter of external reviews, Phil Davis on SEN mentioned that they are far more worthwhile than an internal review. Internal reviews can be hopelessly conflicted.

Jack Viney Extends Contract Until 2028
We'll be absolute bottom 2 next year if our midfield loses Viney, ANB and one of Trac or Oliver departs. Having Todd at North is a bit concerning and Jack would clearly see a bright future at North.

Hopefully West Coast are interested.

Andrew McQualter - Appointed coach of the West Coast Eagles
Was understood to be extremely highly rated when we appointed him last year. Josh Gabelich on SEN just doubled down on this and says he’s still incredibly highly rated within the industry. So if he’s not the problem, who is?
-
Luke Parker open to move
Yes he’s absolutely done at the MFC. They might even leave him stranded on 199 games.

If this latest news is true, and the public relations continues to go down the tank, we can kiss goodbye any thoughts of having a big trade week to dramatically improve our list. Less Houstons and more NQR’s in your McAdams and Fullartons. I’m throughly disappointed in this news. We could’ve had a genuine, genuine A grader walk into the doors next year.
