Well we definitely learnt not to listen to what Gus says in the media. “I won’t be making a decision any time soon” 2 days later, bang, 6 year deal.
-
LN, you know as well as anyone that clubs and players also use the media as a tool, for their own benefit. And we have been through the reasons in the past why clubs/players/coaches are selective about not releasing certain intel into the media.
-
Really well said. I have found much the same. Watched most of the mid-week media shows last year. But would be lucky to watch more than 15 minutes a week this year. Don’t let it get to you. Unfortunately the big media $$ aren’t paid to guys/ladies such as Kingy for correct insightful analysis (that would be over the heads of 80% of consumers). Instead they are paid for the ability to generate a reaction (no matter how much poetic license is required to generate an emotional reaction)

Usually a good indicator to go with the bookies when they oppose the “experts”. No guarantees, but from a value perspective it works.
-
This view makes more sense to me. Credit to him for not dragging it on to the end of the season. But it would appear some crafty work together with his manager, has ensured he is not going to be short of a dollar over the next 6 years.

Our individual beliefs are formed from past experiences, research, who we have spoken to etc. It is very difficult to change someone’s beliefs. If we all accept that none of us know with 100% certainty why we win or lose games, it probably makes it easier to just sit back and enjoy the game. Otherwise this circular loop of a discussion will do all our heads in. For example, do those successful opposition tactics work, when we are running on top of the ground. I won’t go on. A rabbit hole that doesn’t really benefit anyone. -
Any goss on how Clarry’s thumb is holding up?
-
Pros must believe we will suddenly remember how to pressure, run both ways, be sharper with skills, be mentally more ruthless, have greater inside 50 connection. Can’t think of any other factors :))
-
Cheer up. like you, I also got it wrong in suspecting Gus might depart, or maximise his $ by shopping himself around during the trade period. He hasn’t done this, which is a credit to him, and a great development for the club. Be happy!

Understand your views (and looking for acknowledgment of multiple reasons) Am sure there is a bit of mis-communication going on, and the blue corner vs red corner are not actually as opposed in view as it may appear. On the mental side there is a big difference in my mind of being a little complacent or flat during the grind part of the season vs this point on, where things ramp up. If we see more loose checking, and players choosing when to pressure etc tomm night, I will be more concerned about our hunger and wondering if it’s just not our year. But a big response, and we can hopefully put some past bad habits behind us. -

Wait one more sleep Luci. If we suddenly run out the game significantly better, might be time to acknowledge some things. If we fade in the second half again, I and others am sure will be happy to acknowledge more weight towards other theories like “lack of fitness”, “complacency” etc. -

Posted this link due to details on continuing to train with intensity during finals, even if load/volumes not continuing to increase. Ie yesterday’s training footage very much inline with expectations. -
Great to hear. Good on him. Will never doubt you again Gus

Happy to admit Gus got me a good one with his SEN interview :- Assuming of course, Dees haven’t over-paid due to the threat of him leaving. But great news, great day. Another premiership player here for the long term.

Burgess went into some detail on this either in one of his podcasts or an interview late last year. Others can explain it better, but I recall him talking about maintaining levels, rather than increasing them as you do through the loading period. So from this respect my understanding was the “tapering period” is not the same as what it would be for an athletic event for example. And he also went into detail to explain why in his view it was worth risking injury, to have a really intense match sim style training the Sat before the GF (during the week off) vs a more cruisy session, which I believe the dogs had. So they will still be training really hard/intensely from here on in, but not at volumes that risks heavy legs like we see during some of the loading weeks. -
Mate, there is no panic or attacks. And no, with the full context of what he said, there was no “stirring the pot” If he wants to go and get paid higher elsewhere to play midfield, he has most posters blessing (from what I have read)

Wrong brother. Hamish made the comments. https://www.sen.com.au/news/2022/07/27/what-out-of-contract-demons-future-could-heavily-depend-on/
-
“Making clubs aware” is very different to him directly saying what you have suggested “a lot of due diligence to do” “not even close to a decision” ”decision will be what’s best for me and knowone else” ”position is a key consideration” And to be fair and balanced, yes he said “he loves playing backline” but as Nev said, he is a smart bloke, and knows it’s not in his interests to be too blunt and [censored] off the coach/club yes in my view this was putting himself on the market &/or attempting to pressure Melb to lift their offer. Confirmed by his brother’s less subtle representation of the situation (and I doubt his brother would have said what he did, without Gus’ approval) To be clear I am not attacking him, just an opinion on the situation, and calling it as it is. If Melb’s offer is well below other clubs, and he feels he will get greater opportunities at other clubs then so be it.
-
Good call. Don’t want Gus to leave, but also don’t want the club to revise our offer higher. If he can get 700-800k as an inside mid at another club, go for it.
-
10-20% more intensity & pressure from CP, Harmes, Eddy, Sparrow and a couple of others would go a long way. I don’t include Oliver and Viney in the above, as I am not sure they know anything other than 100%
-
Brown already ruled out
-
Did Viney jump on SEN after R19 (when 2nd on ladder, and in contention for a flag) and make sure every club out there is aware that if they promise him midfield time, and a decent contract he is willing to talk?

I am concerned about the ability for Weid & BB to play in the same team. Weid’s games without BB this year R3. 4.3 goals, 7 marks, 11 possessions R4. 0 goals, 3 marks, 7 poss. (Raining, wet) R5. 1.1 goals, 4 marks, 8 poss R19. 3 goals, 4 marks, 10 poss Weid’s games with BB R6. 3 goals, 1 mark, 8 poss R7. 1 goal, 1 mark, 8 poss R11. 0.1 goals, 3 marks, 7 poss R15. 0.1 goals, 1 mark, 11 poss R16 0 goals, 3 marks, 12 poss Without BB - Ave 2 goals, 4.5 marks, 9 poss With BB - Ave 0.8 goals, 1.8 marks, 9.2 poss If no BB, Weid has shown himself to be valuable, or at least our best option. With BB, his contribution is down, & there is a void for the team to cover 2 players with very poor defensive pressure
