I think this thread about embarrassing records has reached its use by date. Time for something more positive. What records do we now hold that are ones we can be proud of?

Jake Bowie tops the list of players who never played in a loss with 10. The next best, held be a few people is 9.

Is the 12 goals in a row the best ever in a Grand Final?

Has any team ever kicked three goals in less than a minute of game time?

Please add to the list. Let's enjoy our true magnificence!

    Terrific post and thread.

I reckon that an NT team is closer than what people might think - and could be announced at the same time as a Tassie team if it was to eventuate (most likely staggered by a year or two like the last pair). The NT gov will cover the funding gap based on social impact (a reduction in crime etc.) with help from the federal side. A new stadium in the city aligning Darwin with Asian sporting interests is also being proposed to bring in extra cash. As an aside, Peter Jackson is on the taskforce for establishing an NT team.

Edit: Just noticed that the NT gov put out another tender last week for consulting on the social impact of an AFL team (my prediction is that PwC or maybe KPMG will scoop that one up). https://tendersonline.nt.gov.au/Tender/Details?id=20617

A report had already been commissioned by the AFLNT taskforce by a lesser-known consultancy. This feels like a step up to gain some political influence. https://www.aflnt.com.au/sites/default/files/uploads/NT AFL Team Scoping Report.pdf

Whether people agree with the concept or not, it's an interesting proposal, and possibly a world first for elite sport. And unlike the proposed Tasmanian team, I think a lot of NT-born people here would switch allegiances, especially when there are such strong family connections. It might impact us - but is also an opportunity to capitalise.

An NT team would be bloody awesome. Makes sense from an AFL perspective - bringing in two teams means an extra game every weekend. Both NT and Tas are footy heartlands that would add to the national competition. Can't imagine the NT side would beat the Tassie side away very often and vice versa 😂

    Low 50's.

Before the season started I expected this game to have a bigger crowd than the Dogs game due to the timeslot and Dogs fans don't go to the MCG. However not so sure anymore.

Yeh I has pencilled this in pre-season as a massive crowd. Disappointed when I checked the bombers draw!! Think it will probably sneak into the 60s.

    On merit we're a 6 goal+ better team...

My MFCSS unfortunately still runs deep - this feels like a danger game. If we bring the sam intensity as the GC game - lookout game on and... who knows

These [censored] seem to get the better of us... maybe I'm still scarred from Hird pulling 2 out of his butt in the last minute to beat us in 99 (or 2000 or around then anyway) but I hate them with a passion and would rather be weary of them than overconfident and only bring 70% effort

We've actually won 4 of the last 5 against them.

  5. Mid 40s. Ruined by fixturing. Harder for kids, country people, interstaters. Neutrals less likely to turn up - there would've been a big number for a rnd 1 GF replay.

Plus dogs fans don't really travel to the G and some people still staying away cos of covid.

It will have an enormous TV audience which is of course why the AFL are playing it on a Wednesday.

I remember there would of been around 10 Melbourne Supporters shoulder to shoulder, across, then going down  from the Hard Yakka signs behind the goals to the fence at the ground. I thought if it kicked off we'd be in real trouble. But at 22 you think you're invincible (my Dad refused to go with me) and by the time we got those 2 last Qtr goals, the Hard Yakka sign nearest to me got pummeled with an open right hand. All respect to any Magpie fan who was there that day from the way I was treated as I don't remember any eyes or verbal coming towards my direction. I remember walking out proud as punch just wishing my Dad had come and my Boss had come to experience one of the best days I'd had at the Footy. I enjoyed all the missions of going to all the Suburban grounds. Geelong is the only ground i haven't got to but would like to.

I was at this game as a 7yo! I was also behind the goals at the Yarra Falls end. Was a real eye opener! One of my favourite days at the footy. They were closing these grounds just as I started going to the footy so I've only been to Vic Park, Princes Park, Western Oval, Kardinia Park and Waverley if that counts. I loved the old grounds with their rawness and idiosyncrasies. I've watched Melbourne in Hobart and Canberra which are similar in some ways but don't have the same passionate atmosphere because there are so many neutrals. I'd love to watch Melbourne play a Tassie team down there.

Likewise ( since 1958 supporter every day week month season decade!!! ) so lucky I was able to travel to Perth to see it all live. ( from Brisbane where I live via 2 weeks "quarantine in SA' .

Family in SA and Friend in Perth helped me with accom. And plenty of fun things to do along with some travel highlights.

Best Holiday ( 3 weeks) in Aust. Of my life .

Thank you everyone Thank you Dees!!

Jealous!!! That sounds like a bloody great trip!!

One thing in our favour is that we are the first flag team in history that has unfinished business - to win one back in Melbourne. And I'm looking forward to watching it happen in the next few years!!

Having started following Melbourne in 1965, I was also a member of the "57 years" club.

A Demons flag was also the last item on my bucket list to be ticked off but the initial euphoria wore off much quicker than it obviously has for many of you.  Maybe I'm just old*, jaded and hard to impress these days.

    *  So old that last time I attended an antiques auction, I attracted three bids.

Fair enough- different people experience things differently.

So many great images from our season.

I rate this most iconic - I recall the instant 57 years despair morphed into spine tingling disbelief

That is a photo of the greatest moment in Melbourne's history.

  10. I like Brayshaw and I think his bang thing was awesome and is now iconic. But I think my favourite call of Clarry's goal was on ABC radio. I don't know who the caller was but he said "the demons...they're seeing what paradise must look like." Which just felt completely accurate because in that moment we all left this mortal realm.

In a valiant attempt to get this to 100 pages by New Year's Day, when did you know we had won the GF?

For me it was that moment in the PF, so far ahead in the 3rd quarter but Gus and Hibbo were madly diving in the Geelong goal square to deny even a point. Then I thought 'they will not let anybody beat them'.

Clarry's goal for me. My head said 24 points was still game on, but in my heart I knew.
