GAMEDAY: Practice Match vs Richmond

Good to see we have allowed Richmond to have two membership vans at our home game, at our home facility. No signage for us. But hey, none of that matters apparently -

I’ve been watching tonight’s practice matches and have noticed that the music blaring after goals has returned. I absolutely hate it. The MCG did away with it, but then it started to creep back at the end of last year. Are we stuck with this [censored] now? It’s so unnecessary. Adds nothing to the game. Our crowds generate the atmosphere. Get rid of it. It’s garbage

Is he playing in this practice match?

It could be media spin from Richo, to sooth the MFCSS of some, but I hazard a guess that it was just a knock and he is missing through precaution more than anything

Jack Viney is on track for Round 1 after injuring his knee at training.

Maybe the discount is gone since we dropped their logo from the jumper? NB are a quality brand, but the exposure in their retail stores for MFC is appalling. Recently visited the Chadstone store, they had a big framed premiership jumper on the wall, when I asked where the Dees stuff was they had no idea what I was talking about. When I pointed at the jumper and explained further, I was told they don’t stock MFC gear in their retail outlets. I did pick up $10 training tops at the outlet today.

Rival clubs fume at Collingwood’s hold on MCG seats

Yep, and our club needs to own the day and make members aware of the importance of being the 19th man. Time to get it done ✅ -

This whole narrative should be motivation for every Dees fan to get to King’s Birthday this year and ensure we completely outnumber the scum bags. Seriously had it up to here with Collingwood rewriting history. Last week Kelly said they were the first MCG tenants, now this garbage from old big head Eddie. It’s our turf, time to let ‘em know -

Geez, the reserves got a pasting then. Anyone show anything in that game? I stopped watching after Q4, the repeated coverage was doing my head in. -

People splaying Lever won’t play rd1, due to a rolled ankle. Is that hyperbole and MFCSS?? -
I too thought Pert articulated the conundrum well. There is progress being made, but there are a lot of stakeholder and the State Gov has asked for confidentiality. This probably helps with ensuring other ‘interested parties’ don’t come out of woodwork. It’s a delicate process that needs to be well managed. Casey will always be retained, but there is no intention to pursue that as a permanent solution, because the pillars tht have been established revolve around a ‘footprint’ in the inner city. We’ve invested a lot in this pursuit, I think Pert and Roffey will see it through

You keep mentioning race…why?? Pretty sure the affluent suburbs of Melbourne have a lot of races, particularly those from the East. I reckon we are going around in circles here. I also think we should look outside the box. I’d be looking at Caulfield. I’d be looking at the Mornington Peninsula, which is now connected by Peninsula Link.

So the young couples moving there are going to switch teams because Melbourne train there? I thought that wasn’t how it worked. “When was the last time anyone with deep family roots in a footy club has switched teams?” 😉 All I’ve said is that we are alienating our existing supporters if we move away and stop paying attention to our traditional heartland. I rebuke the notion that Hawthorn moving to Waverley did that, as the east was a hawthorn area before they moved. In addition, they have 13 premierships since 1965, which is why they were able to grow their supporter base. I understand that you are passionate about Casey, as you are a resident there, but I don’t think the move has done much for our club, other than create an inconvenience for the existing member base. If it was so appealing, would we even be looking at the inner city ?

I’ll ask you again, how many people have we converted out there? Where is the data tht shows they are interested in football, as opposed to soccer, which has also moved out there? We now are competing with Melbourne City for support. You think we have a chance at beating City Football Group at winning over people with an interest in the world game? where did I say there was an issue with migrants? I’m just stating that immigrants are less interested in our code of football. Look at soccer participation in Casey. It’s sky high. Which is why Melb Cuty shifted from Bundoora to Casey

The shops are across a four lane road and barely walking distance. It’s a plaza with shops akin to something in Midwest America. Sorry jaded, your area has no appeal … except to low income families and migrants. I bet the red rooster is a big hit on Friday nights. melbournes home attendance last year was actually very good. Ranks 2 overall if you look at it from a percentage of members perspective. Also higher than many others. So that is a myth.
-
So why are there so few that attend Casey Fields when we play preseason games there? Same for AFLW. While other sides are packing out inner city suburban grounds and making a day of it? I am not going to put you down personally Jaded, but the area in which Casey is situated is horrible. There is no soul. There are no shops. No train. It is an inconvenient wasteland.

I don't disagree with you. However, what have we done to engage the City of Melbourne residents? It's a huge opportunity. Many people who have zero links to AFL clubs, just waiting to be engaged. Do they even know we exist? Be hard to know, given our lack of exposure in the city to whom our name is tied. We tried to increase brand exposure a few years ago in this way. They rented signage opposite Flinders st Station and ran free coffee carts. I like that sort of initiative. I am a little like you - I'd prefer a Demon Shop in the heart of the CBD, rather than at the [censored] end of the MCG, where no one can access. There is so much empty retail in the CBD, you'd perhaps consider it, wouldn't you?

I'd love to get the club to release the figures on how many members, of our 65K, are residing in Casey. I would absolutely love to see those figures. When we play games out there in preseason we are 100% of the time outnumbered. The AFLW team gets lowly crowds. It is not heartland, it never will be. You actually can't convince me otherwise.

I respectfully disagree with you. Collingwood still have very big links to Vic Park. There are many many Hawthorn supporters in Hawthorn, Camberwell, Kew and the leafy eastern suburbs. They grew their support when they moved to Waverley, expanding their supporter base, and by engaging the community out that way. I do agree that onfield success helps. You say "Your point about the heartland, hate to tell you but that has changed with different demographics of people,..." - I don't really understand what you are trying to say. Melbourne heartland still appears to be Malvern, Glen Iris, Armadale, Toorak and the bayside areas. This was fairly evident during our 2021 finals campaign, where many of the homes were sporting melbourne colours. For me, this is why the Caulfield Racecourse makes a of of sense.
