1990 what could have been
2004 sitting on top & we lost the last 4 inc the elimination final against Essendon. 2018 missed out on top 4 losing to teams outside of the 8.

1990 what could have been
We shot ourselves in the foot dropping games against bottom teams which was a consistent theme during that era & all other finals campaigns . Getting a double chance is a major thing eg 2000 we played a qualifying final then into a prelim & Gf. 2018 we dropped some dumb games & should have finished 4th.

1990 what could have been
1990 another elimination final 4th in a row & just couldn’t finish in the top 3 for a double chance . Only % seperate 2nd to 4th a very even year & we dropped games against lower placed teams.

2000 Preliminary Final
Yep somehow the mfc find a why to fall off a cliff... believe the 2000 group were worthy of a flag & Failed to play finals in 01. Similar to 2018 unable to maintain the intensity consistently to win the ultimate.
-
Unable to maintain success why??
Maintaining success from playing consistently in finals which leads to premiership success is what I’m talking about... which is what Hawks, Geelong , swans , tigers , WC have done

2000 Preliminary Final
Yeah since Neitz & Schwartz, has the club had a major key forward??? Hogan didn’t hang around , Tom MacDonald who knows.

2000 Preliminary Final
Went to this game so excited about the future & really believed that group should have won a flag during that era... as usual the fell off the cliff in 2001 with poor off the field decisions .
-
Unable to maintain success why??
What are the key factors as to what underpins maintaining success long enough to win a flag. Is it the fact the club has had so many lows that it gets caught up with initial success of making finals & is then overwhelmed, is it the fact that the continue financial issues impacting decisions to maintain success?? Looking at our history of making finals it appears its always been a scramble to get there 87-91, 94, 98-2006 & 2018. We continue to fall of the cliff. The bulldogs are a similar club winning the flag in 2016 have struggled to maintain success & unbelievably turned on each other after this, though I’m sure mfc supporters would be happy with the some outcome.

A Sean Wight Tribute
Had a great finals series in 87/88 .. the final vs Westcoast when he went forward & kicked golds turned the game. Very sad that both he & Stynes passed away so young!

Snatching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory
So mfc like , I remember that game 1992 & was Northey last season ..

Hawthorn Demons
Tale of 2 clubs... Hawks 4 flags, 80k members plus $$$ profits each year, proper home base MFC 0 flags, 50k members plus still in debt & lost 1.5 mill in 2019, no home base One club moved on , planned their future, the other going around in circles

Robbo & Green Review the 2000 Qualifying Final
The premiership clocks we had 87-91 , 94, 98-2006 we lacked the polish vs the premiership sides, though 94 I’d say our spine was the strongest with Lyon, Schwartz , Neitz , Stynes, Jackovich, Tingay , Lovell , but in 95 we were decimated with injuries & many never returned Bottom line in the last 30 yrs club hasn’t been able to sustain success long enough & improve the list enough in those premiership clocks, 2019 is just another example!

1988 Preliminary Final
They played 3 tough finals & not much left in the tank for the GF , hawks had a week off before prior in the final 5 format.

Robbo & Green Review the 2000 Qualifying Final
Coming back from 21points & watching the Carlton fans in disbelief was awesome. Daniher got the best out that side considering Melb had the worst training facilities at the Junction oval along with their preseason done across multiple venues & using plastic cones for goal posts! Team unity/chemistry is everything!
-
1994 Team best Goal to Goal line up
95 decimated by injury , Lyon back , Schwartz knee, Prymke back , jackovich back , Charles injured
-
1994 Team best Goal to Goal line up
Believe this list was the best goal to goal line up, as usual the injury curse severely impacted this group from winning a flag... Stynes, Lyon , Shcwarz, Neitz, Jackovich, Tingay, Pike, Lovett, Prymke, Lovell Goals Lyon 79 Schwarz 60 Jackovich 51 Pike 25 Charles 24 lovell 29

1988 Elimination Final
It’s a pretty simple game played with no nonsense footy, way over complicated nowadays with way too many assistant coaches etc etc . Understand it’s full time professional now & players are fitter & faster but watching the game I saw lot of goals scored with quick ball movement . Great to see Northey with just a couple of assistants & not 15 laptops... KISS principle
-
1988 Elimination Final
How well has the game evolved in 32years??? Watching the game the ball movement when executed correctly when u consider the wet conditions moved quickly. Coaches box only had the coach & a couple of assistants vs 15 now, are they over complicating it now ???

1988 Elimination Final

2004 Missed opportunity

1988 Elimination Final

Reflections on the 2006 Elimination Final
The tanking culture made Brock leave & no doubt destroyed the Careers of many others & winning culture which lasted for a decade!
-
2004 Missed opportunity
As I said so Melbourne like.. the Injury curse continues at any sniff of success eg 2019
-
2004 Missed opportunity
Sitting on top of the ladder then lost last 4 games of the season to finish 5th & miss out on a double chance . Lost the elimination final against Essendon who finished 8th! So Melbourne Like!
