A month ago I was liking the idea of getting Hogan back.    But how much money , energy and resources did we burn on Harley Bennell?   Hogan will be the same and it will end the same.

Big difference between Hogan and Bennell.

If Hogan is fit and the price is right then absolutely i'd have him back. My preference is Brown though.

You’re a chance. The Van Djik injury has blown the title race wide open. Its anyone’s so why not Everton.

Ancelotti is an excellent manager, strong midfield and Calvert-lewin looks primed. My only concern is defensively. Very dodgy keeper.

  3. I don’t care about Geelong and Cameron. To hell with them.

We’re in good shape but face a critical trade period. Get Brown and Smith. Move TMac on whatever which way we can and bring in Voss as midfield coach. Pay overs if needs be.

    The time is now.

I think I require a higher burden of proof on these things because nobody really knows and it's easy just to throw about statements like that without any evidence. We just get speculation from footy journos who have, kindly speaking, a pretty ordinary reputation for their ability to extract the truth. All of the things you said might be true but nobody has any way of knowing; it's just speculation and I think forms a pretty weak argument.

My personal view is that, in the absence of credible information, people will project the narrative that they want to hear. I just don't think that the evidence justifies a view one way or another.

I don’t think there’s any mystery to it Axis. You don’t need to know contract specifics to understand human nature. Stands to reason that if you offer a lower chance of success you have to compensate with higher salary.

Players ultimately want success or most of them do anyways (there are some mercenaries I’m sure) and will accept less salary to join a successful team. If we offered the exact same terms to a player who also had the option of Richmond who do you think they’d join? I think you know the answer.

The Patriots in the US created the template for paying significant unders for talent. They had a brilliant coach and quarterback and were the nearest thing to guaranteed success around. They had players knocking on their door to join particularly players in the latter part of their career. https://www.sbnation.com/2016/3/14/11214640/patriots-contracts-tom-brady-julian-edelman-rob-gronkowski-malcolm-butler

Geelong are probably the closest example in the AFL.

Another example from the EPL a number of years ago was Man City. They were taken over and suddenly had money to burn. They had to pay through the nose for talent but within a few years they had bought their way to success. Once they had achieved success, and the revenues that flow from that, their wage rates then reverted to the average.

  5. Double chance.

    A good run with injuries.

Good form and momentum coming into finals (although not as important since the extra week was introduced).

A majority of the bad umpiring decisions to fall your way.

Well drilled. Defensive structures hold up front to back. Win clearances and contested ball. Good delivery I50. A dominant key forward to kick the goals.

The umpires are the worst people to judge the Brownlow.

When the award was minted it made sense but not any more.

Agree. Their sole focus should be on officiating the game not who is playing well. It’s not like they’re doing such a good job at that as it is.

Back to Shaw and North, though...

For him personally it is easy to see how you'd be crushed as a new senior coach of a season where the club simply failed to function and it seems like everyone was on blame and attack mode as soon as things got difficult. Add to the the collection of 'we saved the club' coterie types who want a say, the large number of disgruntled ex-players, bloody Covid, and the massive pressure that comes from the ever-present threat of the club actually closing down on your watch...

I'm not sure any individual could have achieved much with North Melbourne this season.

But what about next season and beyond?  Things may be even worse and the thought of the club folding or being merged away is one that has to start lurking in the back of people's minds.

They have less talent under 24 years old than we have talent just from the 2019 draft.  They need to find a ruck and a key forward, we're seen this season how much their midfield relies on Ziebell and Cunnington, both currently 29, and supported by the likes of Aaron Hall (also 29), Jared Polec (28) and Shaun Higgins (32 and leaving).  They have a couple of respectable key defenders but Robbie Tarrant is crucial and, again, is 31.

They're delisted 11 players, will lose/trade perhaps four more, and they've recently cut six assistant coaches of all kinds of levels.

They've got no financial reserves, the AFL's smallest supporter base which has already been bled pale for extra contributions, dysfunctional club leadership, unhappy players and an old list with not a single potential star coming through among the kids.

I hate saying it, but right now it is hard to imagine North Melbourne still operating at AFL level in five years time.

I think Roos is perfect for them in a consultancy role. He’ll make sure they put the right people in the right roles. That’s the critical thing. Him and Jackson did it for us when we were a shambles so he can do it for North.

I hope Rhyce Shaw recovers quickly. He did the right thing stepping aside to sort himself out.

This is why clubs need to do their due diligence in picking a coach, Glenn Archer made the decision to make shaw coach, without a due process, Glenn thought they had a good list, Brad Scott told them they needed a rebuild, Shaw said no they are close to being great, he told them what they wanted to hear, we know what happens when someone makes a captain's call on a coach eg( Lyon call on Neeld)

He's hardly the first coach or club to overate their list.

    Goodloss?

You're better than that, OD.  Be critical as much as you like, but no need to pull this five year old stuff out.

Jeez the Church of England brigade are out in force on this thread! Good loss, bad loss are very mild terms and pretty low on the offence scale. Also happen to suit our gormless coach perfectly.

The club look like they’ll provide new assistants and are trading for players that will improve the team. He’ll be given everything he needs to succeed. No more talk of learnings, being ruthless blah blah. Its time for Goodwin to prove himself (past time in fact).

Starts winning and the badloss references go away otherwise harmless nicknames will be the least of his worries.

Word is our Clayton prefers not to be coached. I’ve been laughed at for relaying this on here but it’s what I’ve heard

Big difference between head strong and being uncoachable (the most self-serving remark an under-performing coach can make). Sounds like Clayton does rate some of the coaches and I think he has a point. I mean we are turning them all over!

I don’t know how oppositional Clayton is but there is a line past which his behaviour becomes detrimental to the team.  You need a strong character to coach him which is why I think Voss would be perfect as our midfield coach. Voss was the best midfielder of his generation so he has the cred and authority for the job.  Plus he's a very capable coach by all accounts. Hopefully he has the good sense to steer clear of the trainwreck at North.

  11. This review is taking a while. Our season finished 4 weeks ago. Not much noise either. Surely if Mahoney was being let go it would have been announced by now. Plus trade period is rapidly approaching.

Adem Yze is a great additional but we need more. I guess now that Port are out we can talk to Voss so hopefully there’ll be developments there.
