I like buzz and x factor Tholstrup brings. I also think he has far greater upside with enormous potential to transition into midfield role ala Petracca.

Wilson is an absolute workhorse who is incredibly driven and is the ultimate professional on and off the field. He is another that will play round 1 purely because coaches will be blown away but his high work rate. He's very similar to Ollie Hollands and I think there's an element there that says there is zero depth after Hunter and Lamgdon which makes sense if we select him.

I'm bias and will say Wilson, but my god I would be stoked with Tholstrup

I figured you’d be torn on that one! Thanks @dazzledavey36

Hearing that we’re right into Koltyn Tholstrup with this pick. Hard as nails mid/fwd from WA. There’s likely a few names ahead of him on the draft board but if they’re all taken then Koltyn could be our man. Could be a WA double with Curtin firming for us at pick 6.

Might just be my Melbourne glasses, but parts of Tholstrup’s game remind me Colin Sylvia.

    Thanks, hadn't seen this one.

Find it hard to decipher if they have mail or just making educated guesses. It can read either way with some of these write ups.

There’s enough speculative mail out there where you could connect the dots well enough at this point, but the writer apparently has talent/recruitment roles at Calder Cannons & Coburg VFL programs.

Mail could be aggregated spec, but the profiling and matching to club needs probably has some good insight behind the content.

I have heard if we keep 6, we’ll take Caddy.  In saying that we are definitely open to trading it to WC for their future 1st.

It was interesting that other clubs are the ones that contacted Jason Dover re:Dees consideration of trading p6 for WCE future 1st.

Melb would wargame all poss scenarios, so wouldn't be surprised if we’d talked about potential swap for WCE’s ‘24 1st rounder & then canvassed the clubs with picks 7-10 to see if they would potentially do a deal for 11 & a further pick we would get from WC. They possibly then would have fed that on to Dover, hence the convo & line from Melb.

Working to get pick 1 would still be the higher ranked objective, so Dees have to say they’d take Curtin (I’d very much hope he’d be in the frame for us regardless), otherwise you lose all leverage in trade talks. Curtin’s camp probably prefer he stay out West, so serves them well to put that out there one way or another.

On the draft night when it comes to our pick 11, can we swap it for someone elses future pick. And could we for instance at our turn, swap our pick 11 plus our future 1st or 2nd to say Hawthorn for their future 1st?

Im not asking is it good value, I merely want to know if it is allowed.

Yep, providing all of that happens before the earliest current selection being utilised has been utilised.

I thought this was something that Carlton were happy to have out there (given they had his brother they knew all about him) which enabled them to get him (and McKay) in the one draft!

Might well have been. Curnow had been hovering around the best 4 or 5 rated players for a chunk of the season and in the mix for our selection before dropping late. A few thought he was the most talented player in it at the time.

I think the go home factor for Tassie lads will be greater than any other state. There will be enormous pressure on them to do so. Also great financial rewards and the AFL will create a clear pathway for them to do so.
I listened to a couple of interviews Sanders has given. He comes across very well and a great professional. He’s father is massively involved in grass roots footy here in TAS.
I think his flight risk is greater than other players for these reasons.
Now we may get handsomely compensated if he does choose to go home but that’s not clear yet either.

Was recently chatting to a former Tassie premier about the team and its prospects.

They said that the team was effectively no chance to be in place on current timelines. Horrible contracts for Tas government re: stadium build (unviable based on current contract) and ongoing fees to AFL, not enough fed money, variable support from sections of the public who believe the money could be spent elsewhere and only vague backing from the AFL (unlike the northern franchises) who want to look like they are supporting a Tassie team. The opposition (who are the same colour as the fed government that provided funding) have said they will scrap plans and will only go ahead with establishment if contracts are renegotiated.

The path ahead is littered with significant obstacles. I don't think we should be tailoring our recruiting based on the framework of the plan for commencing establishment of a Tassie team sometime in the future.

Caddy not lasting to pick 8 speculation is interesting. As far as I can tell no club before us have been linked to him yet. That leaves us and GWS as potential suitors maybe? Or perhaps there's more twists in the top part of the draft to come.

    Hypothetical question.

If Caddy was still on the board at our pick and Geelong came hard for him with an offer of pick 8 and future 1st, would you consider it?

We go to the draft with 8 and 11 and deathride Geelong who I think will spend another year outside finals.

This would certainly mean goodbye to the crop of Reid, Curtin, Duursma, McKercher, Sanders, Watson.

    8 and 11 could net us O'Sullivan and perhaps a Windsor/Leake/Wilson

From the linked article, the below immediately precedes the statement about Caddy not getting to Geelong:

'Hawthorn likes small forward Nick Watson and Western Bulldogs are eyeing gun midfielder Ryley Sanders at pick five, leaving star goal kicker Nate Caddy for Melbourne at pick six.'

The only way I can see that is happening is:

    MFC give North 6 + 11 for 3

    North give WC 2 + 6 for 1

    That means North give 2 + 3 to WC for 1 + 11

We’d probably need something else back as well if we’re playing a decisive role in helping those clubs achieve their goals.

Would think one of those later 1st round picks North have stashed or WC’s 2nd rounder.

You have rocks in your head if you think dees will trade 6+11 for 3

Turns out we were in talks with Roos & GC (early in FA period) which would have seen us give up 6, 14 & F1 for pick 3 and a '24 end of 1st rd pick (Nth compo).

  11. Anyone catch Gettable today? Cal was saying Dees, GC & Roos were in talks early in the FA period to swap picks. GC’s pick 5 would have gone out, Dees would have given up 6, 14 & F1, Roos throw in pick 3 & a ‘24 end of 1st rd pick (compo).

Dees would have taken pick 3 & Roos future end of 1st rd, Roos would take picks 5 & 6 & GC take home the rest for further pick swaps and bid matching.

Obviously the deal didn’t get done, but interesting that we explored trading our hand to get to pick 3 (not 1). This is all prior to Dogs locking in pick 4, so were we expressly trying land in front of Hawks (at that point heavily linked to Duursma, also like Watson)?

If the Roos remain keen, a variation of that deal could be possible if the Eagles decide to draft Reid.

The top ten in the 2013 draft makes for interesting reading:

    1. Tom Boyd - Giants
    2. Josh Kelly - Giants (pick traded from Melbourne)
    3. Jack Billings - Saints
    4. Marcus Bontempelli  - Bulldogs
    5. Kade Kolodjashnij - Gold Coast
    6. Matthew Scharenberg - Collingwood
    7. James Aish  - Lions
    8.  Luke McDonald - Roos
    9. Christian Salem - Dees (mid first round compensation pick from 2010 traded from Giants)
    10.  Nathan Freeman - Collingwood

Dees end up with three top 10 picks from that draft!

(note: we picked up hunt and traded in Dom Tyson as part of the pick swap that saw Kelly go to the Giants and Salo to us. A Paul Roos call)

Gee, that really was a mixed bag of a top 10.
