Did we win the trade period?

I mean it’s a tough sell to say we did.  We have lost an AA ruck who if nothing else was brilliant cover when Max went down and probably contributed to Max finishing the season in better shape(even with his toe) than the year before.
JJ & Harmes out for McAdam and Billing’s. Time will tell on those I suppose  but saints aren’t as good as us and they were willing to pay part of his wages to get him out the door.
Improved pick 14 to pick 11 and paid a hefty price to do so but given JT sees merit in doing so you’d have to back him.
Put it another way- do you think our list is better or worse than this time last year?

No interstate club is going to pick curtin in the top 5. Too much of a risk. Curtin will be available pick 6

Well he will be on a 3 year deal at whatever club picks him. More than long enough to make him feel at home. I’d hope we would pick him if he’s still on the board at our pick.
But my point was more that if North really want Reid they should show interest in Curtain and put doubt into WC that Curtain will be available at 6.

It wasn’t long ago that Lachie Neale was apparently very keen to get back to WA again until suddenly he wasn’t. Things change.

    and papley

Neale and Papley kept their silence though and didn’t disrespect their clubs by given tv interviews on second last day of trade period while playing golf with players from team he’s trying to get too.
Same day Adelaide’s list manager is say Harry will be going back to Adelaide sooner or later. He may not have the balls to put in a trade request in case he has to stay but this is a very deliberate and disrespectful attempt by him, his manager and Adelaide to get him out of the club this window.
Losing him will hurt our flag chances next year we know that. So does Harry doesn’t seem to bother him too much.

Losing Clarry would have hurt our chances to but the club made a stand to uphold their cultural standards.
Having a player hanging around that goes public about not wanting  to be here shouldn’t meet our standards either.

If the right deal comes in today- do the deal. He’s one foot in rehab and the other is already half out the door.

  4. By the sound of things it will all depend on whether or not Curtain will be available at our pick. Given North hold picks 2&3 and also given they need a key defender they are the key.
If they put lots of time into Curtain before the draft WC are unlikely to deal with anybody else.
I suspect North will end up giving pick 2 and maybe 3 later first round picks that WC will use to trade up.

  5. Expecting crows to come in at the last with a bigger offer.  If he stayed injury free this year I think we win the flag and he could be that important again next year.
But there’s the sort of smoke only a bushfire can create now. We saw how Jackson performed once his head had been turned and it’s becoming very obvious that Pettys  head has been turned more than Doggas was.

  6. The way our trade period is going makes it more important that our two first round selections are a strong chance to have an impact next year ala our 2019 crop.
Caddy has good physical shape already but I’m not sure about him. Didn’t impress in the two or three games I watched him and will be a very similar size to JVR. We also have picked key forwards with our first pick for the past couple of years.
It will all depend on who’s left at our second pick I suppose but I’d prefer us to take a quality mid and key back that have a good chance of making an impact this year.
Curtain/ OSullivan and one of McKercher, Sanders, Wilson or Windsor.

  7. I think it boils down to how Pettys meeting with Goody went. The club will have to put a new contract in front of him on a fair bit more coin. Big incentive  to sign it as I’d assume he could be half a mil better of over the next two years.

If the club is confident he will re-sign then Crows can bugger off. If he has said he won’t resign a massive offer would have to be considered.

  8. I don’t want to lose Petty and I really don’t like to agree with Cornes but I think he’s right here. If Harrison has indicated that he will sign a new contract here then we should hold onto him. If not then it might be wise to trade him now when we can get as much as we can for him.

  9. Ok I’m trying to catch up with everything and see where the facts are and wondering if there’s been an over reaction.
What do we actually know? Is it a fact that he has split with his long term partner and gone off the rails a bit or are we just speculating?

Is he staying at Maxxys house or is that just speculation too?

The blister being a self given tattoo fact or speculation?

Just trying to get my head around this and try and work out if theres real reason to be concerned.

Apparently we’re keeping an eye on Bulldogs pick 10, which is widely reported to be going to GC.

We’ve also been linked with a future 1st from Port (don’t think both of these could happen concurrently).

If either eventuates, we could easily send Blues a couple of first rounders for McKay whilst retaining pick 5.

We have also been linked to swans pick 11 as part of the Grundy deal. No doubt we would sending a second rounder back. I’m happy to be going for him if we hold pick 5.

  11. McKay one is interesting, can see why we would be asking the question. Averaging 43 goals a season over the past 3 years. Provides a big marking target that we badly need- even more so as we start to plan for life without Max.
Another forward that can’t hit the side of a barn door would be bad for overall stress levels though.
What’s peoples thoughts of his value? Id find it easier to get onboard if pick 5 wasn’t part of the conversation.

You're actually arguing for abolishing Academy, F/S and FA compensation.  That's a legitimate position to hold.

I'm OK with them but I understand your point.

I’m actually not. My point is a very simple one and probably more directed at at poster who was saying we should pick O’Sullivan at pick 10 should we get it. He won’t be there at that pick whatever way you look at it.

Yes but @drdrake point is O'Sullivan is actually 8th best player in the available pool because Walters and Read aren't available.

Still see my argument above that the earlier the pick the less detrimental effect this has.

But those picks pushing out the numbers are already "earmarked" for Academy or Father/Son and can be selected at any time with the points or eligibility. The other selections are still available in total just pushed back one in the system for every pick made from these choices.

Same same but different I guess in that whatever way you look at it we won’t get O’Sullivan with pick 10 weather  your logic is because he’s the 8th best talent available or because the pick becomes pick 13. Either way we don’t get him with that pick.

The FS, Academy picks you now these players will effect the draft number but it won't effect the pool of players available at that pick.   If pick 5 goes to 7 we will still have access to the same pool of players to select.

Not sure I agree with this logic. Take O'Sullivan for example. He’s rated as pick 10 on most boards. But he will be gone well before that pick comes round as it will push out to 13/14.

  15. Cadman is very interesting. Giving GWS traded up to get him. I think from memory he was rated at 4th in the draft but they were very keen in getting a forward and were stacked with picks.
He is still a number one pick from last year and would cost us an arm and a leg.
Given we have picked key forwards with our first rounders for the last couple of years it’s a big investment in a lot of young talent in one area.

  16. I think our only chance of getting Mckercher is if North want Sanders and are happy to trade back to get him.
I wouldn’t rule it out as he seems a better prospect than Humphrey and we offered 3 first round for him last year. Two of which are currently pick 5&13.

Big issue with making a similar move for Mckercher might be the Tassie factor. If we trade up and pay overs to get him we are unlikely to get back what we invested should he return to Tas.
