Tin foil hat but believable Umpires reverse tanking decisions to keep a team in the game? You know what we need? An umpire rating system. I know it would be highly contentious and emotive but with enough numbers you could maybe account for selection bias of those team's members who had been "dudded" by a decision. You could use frees for/against by each umpire. For someone half capable with stats and maybe R, something based just on frees paid by each umpire and to which team, based on the result, would not be hard. The rating system would be diabolical but would add a layer anyway. You could weight the system for perceived bias like the size of a team, its potential drawing power and thus gate receipts (follow the money) Hocking is all well and good to say he'll look at the Eagles crowd influence, but, well, he would say that wouldn't he.
