The James Worpel Thread
Whether we are looking into Worpel or not (or even whether we should), my bigger question, and the most important one is: Why would he want to come here? What's the sell? We are 2nd last on the ladder (thanks to %), an absolute shambles on the ground, which you think might and should improve, but based on what metric, I don't know. Most of our guys are on the park right now. And we're not exactly destination material for a CEO either. This is the problem with letting a potential dynasty not only pass by, but almost being stomped on. It took us DECADES to be relevant again, because of the cyclical problem of being [censored], and therefore it being harder to attract people who want to win (not sit in the doldrums for their career), and also losing the quality we do have. It doesn't mean we don't have young talent around, we do. But we need senior talent, and it will be hard to keep them, and attract other senior talent to guide the younguns if the don't fix whatever is going on.... NOW, with some hard-nosed, respectable footy so that others look at us and say hey, I want some of that. Because that's not happening right now. This isn't the 60s, we're not a marque club anymore. We're being passed, again, by the Hawks, the Pies (with the oldest list going around), even the Saints look respectable. The Roos will pass us soon, if not already, as shown by the way they completely embarrassed us (to the extent we didn't already embarrass ourselves). I love a trade target chat, but geez I really am not sure who'd be looking at us at the moment. 'Potential' ain't cutting it anymore. Anyway, rant over. Sorry, today is a 'mostly blue' day.

POSTGAME: Rd 04 vs Geelong
Don’t know why I watch these pressers. I used to like them a lot more when out club was not such a rabble. For the record, losing to the cats over there is no disgrace. The record speaks to that. What sucks is we gave them space all over the ground, about a million more marks, and we look like an amateur footy club going forward. Still. How can we have kicked 4 goals in final quarters over 4 games? With 21 against? We need answers, and a plan, and a huge skill uplift very quickly.

POSTGAME: Rd 04 vs Geelong
Remember when we monstered these mugs in that prelim? Yeah that memory is fading, and we’re so far off that team It boggles the mind. Anyway, 0-4 (worst start since 2012, a year you might also have forgotten), and this year’s final quarters have yielded 4 goals for and 22 against? Aside from the fact that we have no forward connection, we were out marked everywhere and just lack basic skills and gave them room everywhere . Where to now? Honestly don’t know

Lucky bounce for them but it only happened because fritter didn’t look for the extra handball, because our forward line is shamboiic

Far out. Out of our 50 and straight into their goal Tale as old as time, for us anyway

Good to see Viney getting into jvr’s ear after that goal, obviously really low on confidence right now.

GAMEDAY: Rd 04 vs Geelong
Our i50 work is shambic And this end to the qtr is terrible. Every team finds their way to goal so easy against us, and it’s always such a battle for us. Early days and it’s fairly close but we will need to tighten up in q2

Can’t waste those chances Good body work from Fritter Good vision from Kozzie Just sloppy execution. We can fix that.

Go Dees, a little late but let’s start 2025 the way we want to end it.

Our ins are good, a reasonably full strength side - plus Kozzie who makes us better. He should be busting to get out there. This is based on nothing at all, other than we are better than what our results so far this year indicate… but I think we’ll win. It’s the perfect way to kick off our season.

Melbourne Fans Mindset
Agree. I am not too fussed by losses, provided we are heading towards wins. The losses don't give me that much comfort though (aside from GWS, which in hindsight our slow ball movement was helped by rain). We can still turn this around, and I know we are often told that the Lions were 0-3 last year, but they lost their games as follows (to the Blues by 1 point, to Freo over there by 23 - no disgrace there, to the Pies by 20 - again no disgrace), and then a bad loss to GWS in the middle by about 50 points - and they are a serious side, it happens. Our losses have been to a bottom 4 team (argue improvement all you like but 4 teams have to sit in the bottom 4 for there to be a bottom 4 and unfortunately they will be there - along with the Eagles, Tigers and us at this stage), and Gold Coast at our home, where they do not perform well, and having not beaten us in a decade. That's two very bad losses. To start the year, when we should be full of hope, energy and something to prove after all the love/learnings. We can right the ship. We certainly have the personnel on the ground. But I don't think we can rely on the Lions' trajectory, as they had a far more stable on-ground performance base to work with. We have a boring, lifeless, confused, slow, gameplan, and were walloped by both teams. These next couple of months are critical to obviously not only our year, but future years because it will determine whether Trac, Oliver, Kozzie, McVee will want to stay (or as the case may be should stay), but also to make a strong case for others to join us. It's arguable that we missed out on Houston late last year because we were a rabble. We don't want to enter that territory again because as our last bunch of decades shows, it's very hard to emerge. It's easier to stay on top, which is why the Cats do what they do. And why as a result they can attract the right people.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET
Damn this was a good game. Petty was awesome (how good was it to see? Made us briefly remember why we fought to keep him - which is another story in hindsight maybe... although I still think he's capable - where has he gone? Truly mystified). And that Fritter control on the boundary line and class to kick that goal. Oof, where has that guy gone, too? We need these guys back, not the shells we have currently. That goes for quite a few, if we are to win this!
