Swapping Petty & Disco's Roles?
I think many of us have forgotten how good Petty was as a defender. And yes Turner has been one of our best, I still remember games when Petty was a rock in our backline.

Swapping Petty & Disco's Roles?
Early on, but the tally in the voter room is favoring Disco forward. Will be back soon with some live updates.

Hopefully he will take Melksham' s role in a few years...probably less...and locks in down for twelve.

PREGAME: Rd 14 vs Port Adelaide
Same here but his stellar performance against the pies( It was the May of old) has made me second guess myself. Our backline is getting on a bit . It's another reason to move Petty back there as he will play a pivotal role in our future. He's been in the job for well over a year now and he hasn't locked it away. Not by a long shot. Petty can do some ruck duties as well. I'm hoping so much Jvr improves. I still think he will. This season is pretty much a bust now so let's use it to sort out some position experiments. We have May or Disco to try fwd. Disco has shown promise in the role but hasn't really had a decent amount of time in the position. Obviously we need to lure two more big key forwards somehow before next season. Or one and a player that can ruck.l There are a few delists coming up for sure. I think there's not much point moving May now because he's at the end of his career so it really only leaves Disco. Is Disco a better defender than Petty? I don't know. I do remember how good Petty used to be as a defender. But can we at least try swapping Petty and Turner for the rest of the season? Surely Turner would be a better fwd than Petty. We have more to gain than lose in this. Our fwd line has been broken for so long and credit to Goody for sticking with Jvr and trying Jeffo but this has to be an avenue to explore. Can we do a poll on this? I'm going to . I'll take the flack.

Who else is going to ruck. Petty? Maybe.

PREGAME: Rd 14 vs Port Adelaide
Yea he's good. But I think people have forgotten that Petty was one of best before being moved. As good as Turner I think. Probably better He set up our 21 flag down back. People have short memories. Not saying you are forgetting. And surely between May ( who proved on Monday that he is out best) or at least finally back to it, and with Lever getting slowly better is pretty damn strong .I mean you have to admit Lever in the past has been one of the best in the comp. And he's not over the proverbial hill. So if he returns like May did. People have forgotten Lever too. Then those three are the best choice. And Tmac to use as well. And yeah you have to play on form except in the case of dropping Tmac......you also have to consider our fwd line form. I don't see why it's so hard to see that the latter has been the weak link. So roll the dice. Season probably over and we may just discover a new fwd line that dominates. We all have favorites but I'm just looking at the facts. And Turner has only really played cameos fwd so we haven't really seen what he can do which I really feel would be a lot. Especially if he had as much time in the role Petty has or even half of it. And at he end of the day it really is fwd lines that win games not back lines, no matter how water tight they are. And for those who dispute this claim look at the pies games and a plethora of others. How many times have we dominated the i50s count and lost compared to other teams. Can we all at least admit our fwd line is broken and something needs to change? Surely.

POSTGAME: Rd 13 vs Collingwood
Frittas game. A slow srta with a lot of effort. Then some consistent errors. Then some decent time of brilliance. Followed by what can be considered as over confidence. He could have handballed or chip kicked on two occasions that would have been definite goals. A bot like Kozzie who gets a rush of blood to the head. But kps manic play on and super confidence probably gets a pass given how many he does kick. And Fritta who has been struggling probably should have tempered his game. But it's a fine line when freakishly good players are on. Maybe it's that bravado that makes them impact games at times.

PREGAME: Rd 14 vs Port Adelaide
Do you agree Petty belongs back. Thank you for this acknowledge. And I know Turner has been a rock down back and it ain't broke and all that. Bit can you acknowledge our fwd line is broken. And as such would swapping Turner and Petts be such a howler. Yes we may lose a fraction of our defense but we would gain more fwd. No?

PREGAME: Rd 14 vs Port Adelaide
Just wondering what the plan is with Max resting and Jvr or AJ rucking in the middle. Could we rest him up fwd or does this not give enough recharge time. I know his goal.kicking is suspect but having a great contested marker there does wonders.

PREGAME: Rd 14 vs Port Adelaide
It's a good question and thanks for the lack of irony or criticism. And I'll admit I may be off base on this but I feel he is a natural defender with his athletic nature. The problem for me having him playing fwd is his lack of contested marking and goal kicking. I don't think I'm alone in this. I just think he's often slow to get in front of his opponent. He may do well in using his defending skills to punch the ball and get it to ground but we need more marks i50s. He also gets out jostled in situations and struggles to take a pack mark. But I do acknowledge we are probably short in replacements. So you have me here. I suggested the possibility of May but he was brilliant against the pies and I admit I'm wrong here. Tmac claims he's done fwd. Jvr is not delivering. If Petty goes back we still have him, May Lever and Tmac. Not too shabby. This would free Disco who is stronger in my humble opinion. Or we just hope AJ omes good. That's pretty much it. But it's two options. I just think we can't win games with our main tall constantly kicking well under a goal a game. I don't think anyone can claim Petty has been very good in his fwd role. Credit to him for playing in a role he's not great at but something has to give. Fritta and Jake stay fwd.Jvr or AJ for ruck. Maybe Jeffo for someone not performing. That's all we have ATM. I was really excited when Petty after only a few games fwd scored six v the tigers many moons ago but those days have faded. I was excited about Jvr too but despite another ordinary day, I'm not sure. Still hold some hope. Maybe if we move Petty Jvr will help better with Turner. Disco is a strong mark and a good set shot so that is why I want it tried. It's not like what we have been doing with Petty for a year has worked. Surely that means it's time for a change. Just the facts maam.

PREGAME: Rd 14 vs Port Adelaide
It's hard to get excited about this one. After such a deflating display by the umps. It has taken a bit of enjoyment from the game. Also tbh it's really frustrating that we are clearly better than our ladder position proves. I mean we beat the lions in Qld and technically beat Cwood. So it's also a shame that we are just so inconsistent. Had we made finals we could have been a real wild card. I feel our season is well and truly over. I think if we had given half as much of our last effort against St Kilda we would have demolished them. I am starting to believe we have a significant motivation problem and unfortunately that comes down to our coach. It's time to start to find another. Goody's insistence on playing Petts as a fwd is just wrong for me. And as great as a coach as he's been, it's time for him to go. Our fwd line issues are still unresolved. Again we kicked poorly against Cwood. Every single game we do it. And while I think we played outstandingly well last Monday, it's too little too late. Petty missing that goal with his first attempt sums our fwd line up. While the pies couldn't miss. I'm sorry if this is so negative but like the club itself , it's hard to stay motivated and enthusiastic when we kick so poorly and simply don't turn up for some games. Like my support, we all just all over the place.

Salem has become very inconsistent. But I'd still play him. We are lacking in depth. As long as Petty doesn't play fwd, I'm happy.

Harrison Petty
Defending Petty as a fwd is wrong. Someone mentioned he had two contested marks. One of those was way outside the fwd fifty...up on the wing. Didn't see the other one. But that's not enough. His set shots when he actually has any are atrocious. To be fair he was playing against a very good backline but he's just not strong enough in the core. He is athletic and is a natural fender. He averages around 0.77 goals a game. This stat says it all. Not even 20 for a whole season.

I rather be flogged by Bbo than watch that game again. Not because of how we played which I thought was remarkable. ( I wish we had that intent every game). But because of those umpiring it . I think I have a PTSD episode. Max as much as I love him, deluded to think they would give him a 50 m penalty. After all the times they penslised him in the ruck for some unknown reason. All in the last quarter by some strange coincidence.

It was enough for Kzp to stand and stare at the ump to let him know it was way too far.

Thanks BB This was one of many howlers. But as stated before it was the inconsistency with the dobs and the often strange lotto ruck infringement calls that were just as bad. The timing and position all paid at and where, was also suspicious. It really destroyed a good game of footy. It is a big day for a great cause, so maybe I should just focus on that. By by God it's difficult not to be upset by such a low level of umpiring. Like I said I'm suspicious of motives because the level was so low. I mean it's pretty bonkers to believe the umpires deliberately try to get a team over the line. To do so would clearly be deliberate cheating and not something I feel happens. But again it was so bad, it's makes one feel there is. Maybe it's a subconscious thing by the umpires, knowing they are surrounded by thousands of crazy fans . Not just at the ground but the possibility of meeting them outside of the game. Who knows why? I can't get my head around deliberate cheating so that's all I can fathom. I do know that yesterday's standard was a huge blight on a special day. Again I'll just focus on this to move on. I will say I'm proud of the intent we bought and despite the howlers we made, credit given to many players that gave their all. And there were quite a few. It's sad this thread has had so many posts but I'm glad people can vent. Not like we can take our dogs out for a walk to have them do their business on the front lawns outside the houses of many of these twits. In any case, while those umpires probably put the final nail into our finals campaign, it's good to know in one sense we did beat the lions and in fact DID BEAT CWOOD. Although that probably makes everyone feel worse 😕. Because we know our best is better than the best. I don't get why we are as inconsistent as those umpires were. But yesterday reminded me it's still a grand old flag. And there are much more important things than footy. Take care peeps. And .....Happy dog walking.

Harrison Petty
No way. He is a wonderful defender who has unfortunately , consistently been played in a position he is not suited for.

Thanks Jaded. I thought this was the case. Not so with the players. Although there are probably a few that moonlight in some capacity. Daicos could probably find work as an actor. But gone are the days when the plumber who installed your toilet was abused by you while he was playing the next day.
-
Harrison Petty
Thanks for this. You make some very good points. Regarding Turner, I agree he has become a very good defender. Although I thought May was back to his brilliant self . But I don't want Petty fwd which means he needs to defend. So we would probably have to play Disco there ( fwd). Which is a clear loss to our backline but the gain up fwd probably negates this.
-
Umpiring standard
Yep. The inconsistentancy with insufficient intent was doing my head in. Also there were some puzzling frees against Max in the last quarter in the ruck. When it seemed we may win. If he was angry at the end of it all, then he had damn good reason to be.
-
Harrison Petty
Absolutely. Goody has been wrong playing him forward and for so long. He's simply not a forward. He lacks the strength and accuracy. He is however, a very good defender and needs to play there. Goody has been so stubborn in this. It's annoying. I'm sure most would agree he belongs in the backline. His contested marking count is too low as is his number of goals kicked. The latter under one goal a game. And it's not like he hasn't had a decent stint in to position. Come on Simon, let it go. Please.

Is that current situation with some AFL umps? I'm pretty sure it is but not 100 per cent sure.
-
Umpiring standard
It could be argued that had the umpiring been more consistent and fair we would have won. Therefore it is the reason we lost. I get the arguments for the many crucial errors that were made but it's simply an issue of just not having a decent standard of adjudication. The insufficient intent rule seemed to be applied on a whim. I know we made some horrendous decisions but so too did the umpires. I think it's a credit we did so well despite the umpiring.
-
Umpiring standard
It wasn't just the disparity, it was the inconsistent calls. In particular the insufficient intent rule. Also the places and timing when and where frees were awarded. And the pies got several frees for high contact. There is one pies player who is a master of milking these. And he sucks the umps in constantly. Also in the last quarter when we had momentum, the umpires simply plucked out several frees against Max for some unknown reason or rule. Most convenient at a time when we were dominating. Given yesterday's display, it's very hard not to think the umpires wanted to see the pies win. In other words, cheat.
